A mobile station receives a control message containing an indicator of presence of a first access network that operates according to a first protocol that is capable of interworking with a second access network that operates according to a second, different protocol. In response to receiving the indicator, the mobile station performs a procedure to establish a personality for the mobile station that specifies the configuration to allow the mobile station to use features of the first access network that enable interworking with the second access network.

A system and method of enabling a mobile device to communicate with a local IP network host and an external IP network host using a femto cellular access point on a femto cellular access network. A local gateway is coupled to the femto cellular access network for receiving data packets transmitted on the femto cellular access network and for routing the data packets to one of a local IP network and an external IP network, based on a destination address associated with the data packets. The femto cellular access network includes an LTE network, an EVDO network connected to an EPC, or a WiMax 802.16e/m network connected to the EPC.

Systems and methods for Secondary Cell (sCell) selection for wireless devices operating according to a carrier aggregation scheme in a cellular communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a network node in the cellular communications network obtains geographic signatures for a number of candidate sCells. The geographic signatures include a geographic signature for each candidate sCell that approximates a coverage area of the candidate sCell. The network node obtains position information for a wireless device and then selects one or more sCells for the wireless device from the candidate sCells based on the geographic signatures for the candidate sCells and the position information for the wireless device. The network node then configures the selected sCell(s) for use by the wireless device according to a carrier aggregation scheme. Using this process, sCell selection is performed, in some examples, without measurement gaps and without disabling an s-Measure parameter.

Systems and methods relating to direct bit rate adaptation for end-to-end communication via a cellular communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of operation of a radio access node in a cellular communications network includes obtaining a bit rate associated with a radio bearer between the radio access node and a wireless device. The radio bearer between the radio access node and the wireless device is part of an end-to-end communication path between the wireless device, as a first end-point of the end-to-end communication path, and a second end-point. The method further includes transmitting the bit rate associated with the radio bearer to the wireless device. By transmitting the bit rate associated with the radio bearer to the wireless device, the radio access node controls a bit rate for the end-to-end communication path between the wireless device and the second end-point.

The present invention relates to methods at a base station of changing Radio Access Technology (RAT) of a mobile terminal in a communications network, and related base stations performing the methods. In one embodiment, a change to be made from a serving RAT to a first target RAT is determined, and a quality measure of the first target RAT is estimated based on a quality measure of the serving RAT. The mobile terminal is instructed to change to the first target RAT responsive to determining that the estimated signal quality measure of the first target RAT exceeds a quality threshold value.

Systems and methods for Secondary Cell (sCell) selection for wireless devices operating according to a carrier aggregation scheme in a cellular communications network are disclosed. In one embodiment, a network node obtains a list of potential sCells for a wireless device. The network node blindly selects an sCell for the wireless device from the list of potential sCells. The network node then configures the wireless device with the selected sCell. Blindly selecting the sCell for the wireless device makes it possible to avoid the use of measurement gaps and reduce throughput loss, according to some embodiments.

The present invention solves communication disruption problems during the hand-off transition period by using a pre-handoff registration of a new foreign agent on behalf of the mobile node The pre-handoff registration message should: (1) identify itself as a pre-hand off registration message, (2) indicate direction of traffic for the pre-handoff registration time period, and (3) specify a lifetime or time period when the pre-handoff registration request will continue to be considered valid The local mobility anchor will accept traffic using the pre-handoff registration care-of address depending on the directionality indicator, but the communication traffic to or from the mobile node will not be disrupted during the transition period. Because the care-of address for the mobile node on the new foreign network can be used to direct communication traffic to or from the mobile node during this transition time period, no disruption of service will be encountered.

Support for continuity of tunnel communications for mobile nodes having multiple care of addressing

A User Equipment (UE) has multiple transceivers, each having a corresponding receiver configured to communicate on respective carriers. The UE monitors a radio access network (RAN) on a serving cell using a first of the receivers, and indicates to the base station that at least one of its receivers will temporary tune-out from the RAN. The base station receives the indication from the UE, and temporarily suspends communications with the UE.

System and method for supporting switching between a packet-switched network and a circuit-switched network

A system and method are provided for enabling a mobile device to establish a local IP access on a packet data network connection on a femto cellular access network. A local server gateway and a macro server gateway are coupled to the femto cellular access network. A mobility management entity is coupled to the femto cellular access network, the local server gateway and the macro server gateway. The mobility management entity obtains a status mode of the mobile device and a location of the mobile device transmitted on the femto cellular access network. The mobility management entity selects one of the local server gateway and the macro server gateway based on the status mode of the mobile device and the location of the mobile device.

A device and method for controlling communications between a User Equipment (UE) () and a base station (BS) () in a radio access network (RAN) () is provided. The UE () indicates to the BS () in the RAN () that a transceiver at the UE () will temporarily suspend communications with the RAN (). Responsive to the acknowledgement from the BS (), the UE () temporarily suspends communications between the transceiver and the RAN (). A mobile station attached to an access network receives a control message identifying neighboring cells of a different wireless technology than the access network. The mobile station searches for signaling of the neighboring cells of the different wireless technology, and in response to not being able to detect the signaling of the neighboring cells, the mobile station increases a time interval between successive searches for the signaling.

It is presented a method performed in a wireless device of a cellular network also comprising a radio base station, the wireless device being in a discontinuous reception mode comprising receiving periods and idle periods. A first node receives information associated with a mobile station to allow for establishment of a session for the mobile station that is attached to a first wireless access network in a first service domain. In response to the received information, the first node sends messaging to a home agent in a second service domain that is of a different type than the first service domain. The first node receives, from the home agent, an Internet Protocol (IP) address allocated to the mobile station in the second service domain, where the IP address is allocated in response to the messaging, and where services provided to the mobile station are anchored in the second service domain.
