There is provided mechanisms for handling content delivery in a client node. A method being performed by the client node. The method comprises registering, by an application entity of the client node and with an MBMS entity of the client node, for enabling the client node to receive content delivered by encrypted unicast transmission and to receive the content delivered by broadcast transmission. The method comprises selectively controlling, by a trusted entity of the client node, reception of the content in a media player of the client node between reception of the encrypted unicast transmission and broadcast transmission depending on whether the content is available or not for reception on the broadcast transmission.

Handling of content delivery in a client node

A split architecture eMBMS with distributed BMSCs providing the same eMBMS service allows for a centralized key service where each BMSC is able to derive a set of MTKs from the MSK using the MTK-IDs as the differentiating input. This avoids the need to send MTKs to the BMSCs.

Centralized key management in eMBMS

A system, method and access gateway for minimizing the number of transcodings of a speech signal during a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) conference call in a packet-switched network in which Tandem Free Operation (TFO) is utilized. The system includes a first gateway connecting the first mobile subscriber to the network, a second gateway connecting the second subscriber, and a third gateway connecting the third subscriber. The second gateway sends a message to the first gateway indicating a speech coding mode being utilized between the second gateway and the second subscriber. The third gateway sends a message to the first gateway indicating a speech coding mode being utilized between the third gateway and the third subscriber. When a three-way conference call is initiated, the first gateway encodes the call path to the second subscriber with the speech coding mode being utilized between the second gateway and the second subscriber. The first gateway also encodes the speech signal for the call leg to the third subscriber with the speech coding mode being utilized between the third gateway and the third subscriber.

System and method of minimizing the number of voice transcodings during a conference call in a packet-switched network

A multiple hyperband capable mobile station is programmed with either or both hyperband and frequency band communications selection criteria. The selection criteria utilized include restricting operation to certain hyperbands and/or frequency bands, preferring operation in certain hyperbands and/or frequency bands, and prioritizing operation to certain hyperbands and/or frequency bands. The programmed hyperband selection criteria facilitate control over server selection by the mobile station in response to a received neighbor list of a hyperband and frequency bands (and the channels therein) for effectuating cellular communications. The selection criteria for a mobile station are further transmitted to the system from the mobile station for use in making mobile station hand-off determinations.

Mobile station preferences in a multiple hyperband capable cellular communications system

A method of providing a list of digital control channel (DCCH) frequencies that are in use in a radio telecommunications network to a mobile station operating in the network. Each DCCH includes a superframe having an extended broadcast control channel (E-BCCH) time slot which is broadcast in an E-BCCH cycle. The method begins by dividing the list of DCCH frequencies into a plurality of DCCH subsets, and sequentially or randomly broadcasting the DCCH subsets to the mobile station in the E-BCCH time slot of the DCCH. The next DCCH subset is broadcast when the current E-BCCH cycle is completed. Alternatively, the next DCCH subset may be broadcast when a timer expires. In this case, a broadcast control channel (BCCH) change notification (BCN) indicator is changed whenever a new subset is broadcast. A DCCH Frequency Plan message is added to IS-136, and includes a DCCH subset, an associated DCCH Frequency List Subset Sequence Identifier (SSI), and information elements to identify the System Operator Code (SOC) and System Identifier (SID).

Method of updating a list of digital control channels (DCCH) in a mobile

A system for determining when a radio telecommunications network should switch between a first grade of service and a second grade of service based upon a highly accurate and reliable estimate of the bit error rate (BER). The system estimates the BER on an uplink and a downlink on a user channel, and determines whether the BER on the uplink and the downlink on the user channel are below a first set of thresholds. The system then measures the residual BER (RBER) and the frame erasure rate (FER) on the voice channel uplink, and determines whether the downlink BER, the uplink RBER, and the uplink FER are lower than a second set of thresholds. If lower, the system sends and receives a data message on a Fast Associated Control Channel (FACCH). The system obtains a highly accurate estimate of the BER on a downlink on the FACCH channel, and reports the downlink BER in a message on the FACCH channel uplink. The system then estimates the BER on the FACCH channel uplink. Finally, the system switches the radio telecommunications network from the first grade of service to the second grade of service in response to determining that the uplink and downlink BER on the FACCH channel are below a third set of thresholds.

Estimation of radio channel bit error rate in a digital radio

A D-AMPS+ cellular communications air interface is presented wherein a packet data control channel and packet data traffic channel is supported in addition to the conventional digital control channel and digital traffic channel. In particular, the packet data control channel, packet data traffic channel and digital traffic channel support multiple modulation level operation (high versus low). Procedures are provided for intracell and intercell modulation transition of mobile station communications carried by a traffic channel. In particular, these procedures facilitate intracell and intercell modulation transition to a traffic channel using the same level of modulation, as well as intracell and intercell (fall-forward and fall-backward) modulation transition to a traffic channel using a different level of modulation.

Support of multiple modulation levels for a cellular traffic channel

A method for dynamically controlling the length of an R.sub.-- DATA message on a random access channel is disclosed. Initially, a set of threshold values for traffic load levels are established with respect to the usage of a random access (RACH) channel. A particular R.sub.-- DATA message length is then associated with each of these threshold values. The RACH channel is monitored to track the traffic load on the RACH, and once one of the established threshold levels are reached, the R.sub.-- DATA message length is set to the value associated with that threshold level. R.sub.-- DATA messages are then transmitted according to the new length.

A D-AMPS+ cellular communications air interface is presented wherein a packet data control channel and packet data traffic channel is supported in addition to the conventional digital control channel and digital traffic channel. In particular, the packet data control channel and packet data traffic channel support multiple modulation level operation (high versus low). Procedures are provided for mobile station selection, as well as re-selection, of either the high or low-level modulation for the packet channels. Procedures are further provided for facilitating a fall-forward to the high-level modulation packet data control channel, or a fall-backward to the low-level modulation packet data control channel with respect to both uplink and downlink packet data communications.

Support of multiple modulation levels for a cellular packet control

A method and apparatus for facilitating inter-network message communications within the framework of a cellular telecommunications network. The message center of the cellular network includes functionality for processing received messages and forwarding the received messages between the cellular network and other connected networks. Each message handled by the message center includes a destination identifier in the text field of the message which identifies not only the delivery destination (addressee) for the message, but also the network over which the message is to be transmitted in order to reach the identified delivery destination. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the message center functionality facilitates inter-network communications among and between a cellular network (using SMS message format transmissions), a conventional telephone network (using facsimile message format transmissions), and a wide or local area network (using e-mail message format transmissions).

A system and method of managing Temporary Mobile Station Identity (TMSI) parameters in a radio telecommunications network having a first mobile switching center (MSC), a second MSC, and a mobile station operating initially in a service area of the first MSC. A first Validity Area Parameter (VAP) is transmitted from the first MSC and a second VAP is transmitted from the second MSC. The first MSC then assigns a first TMSI to the mobile station, and utilizes the first TMSI to identify the mobile station while the mobile station operates within the service area of the first MSC. The mobile station then determines whether it is receiving the second VAP, and invalidates the first TMSI upon determining that the mobile station is receiving the second VAP. The mobile station then registers in the second MSC utilizing the mobile station's Mobile Identification Number (MIN). The second MSC then assigns a second TMSI to the mobile station which is utilized to identify the mobile station while the mobile station operates within the service area of the second MSC. In an alternative embodiment, TMSIs are allocated by each visitor location register (VLR) in the network, and a single TMSI is utilized to identify the mobile station in all MSCs associated with the allocating VLR.

System and method of managing temporary mobile station identity (TMSI)

A cellular communications system including a mobile station that shifts periodically between a stand-by operating mode where communications are possible and a deep sleep operating mode wherein communications are impossible and battery power is conserved. Thus, while the mobile station is in deep sleep mode, message transmissions to the mobile station are impossible. The messages are, however, stored for later delivery, and a record of the stored, undelivered messages is maintained for future access. When the mobile station emerges from deep sleep, the maintained message record is checked, and the stored messages for the awakened mobile station are retrieved and delivered.

Method and apparatus for supporting the delivery of short message

A split neighbor list for a multiple hyperband capable cellular communications system. The neighbor list includes a first data set targeted to Cellular hyperband only capable mobile stations identifying available Cellular hyperband channels. The split neighbor list further includes a second data set targeted to multiple hyperband capable mobile stations identifying available Cellular and PCS hyperband channels. In processing the first and second data sets of the split neighbor list, the multiple hyperband capable mobile stations replace the cellular channels identified in the first data set with cellular channels from the second data set prior to server selection or hand-off determination processing. Alternatively, channel information is extracted from the first data set to complete the second data set.
