A method and system for maintaining a high reliability logical connection between hosts employs adaptive transparent pinging, clone blocking and bandwidth leveling to realize improvements in the areas of connection status verification, security and bandwidth management. In adaptive transparent pinging, a ping interval that defines a frequency at which ping messages are transmitted from an initiating host to a receiving host to check connection status is dynamically regulated based on data indicative of the reliability of a connection. In clone blocking, the receiving host verifies that a new connection that appears redundant is a re-established connection from the initiating host rather than a cloned connection. In bandwidth leveling, data bursts pending on initiating hosts that exceed a predetermined size are scheduled for transmission to receiving hosts.

An improved system for installing a printer on a computer or a network of computers. The disclosed system is capable of installing and configuring a printer on a computer and a network to which the computer is connected. The disclosed system allows a user to specify an arbitrary and intuitive alphanumeric name for the printer so that it may be easily identified among many printers when it is used. The disclosed system allows a user to specify a descriptive location of the printer so that it may be easily located among many printers after it prints a print job.

A system for interfacing a browser and a scanner includes a computer terminal having a browser loaded thereon; a communications network connected to the computer terminal; a HTTP server connected to the communications network; and a scanning device connected to the HTTP server, wherein the scanning device is controlled by the browser on the computer terminal, and wherein a data stream generated by the scanning device is transmitted to the browser and is manipulated thereby. A scanning device is controlled with a browser residing in a computer terminal includes loading the browser on the computer terminal, wherein the computer terminal is connected to the scanning device; setting scanning parameters for the scanning device from the browser; commanding the scanning device to scan an object, thereby creating a data stream representative of the scanned object; and manipulating the data stream with the browser.
