A method of synchronizing playback of a media asset between a first playback device and one or more other playback devices includes synchronizing an initial playback timeline of a media asset with a reference clock, and then playing the media asset with the initial playback timeline on each of the two or more playback devices. In response to a playback-alteration command, an updated playback timeline of the media asset is synchronized with the reference clock, and the media asset is then played with the updated playback timeline on each of the two or more playback devices.

Various embodiments are provided that relate to clock synchronization. In one embodiment, a method for synchronizing a relative clock to a global clock comprises receiving a network packet from a master computing device, the network packet including a network packet time stamp indicating a system time of the global clock when the network packet was transmitted; determining a receipt time offset between a receipt time of the network packet and the network packet time stamp, the receipt time indicating a time at which the network packet is received as measured by the relative clock; and adjusting a system time of the relative clock toward the system time of the global clock by updating a system time offset to the receipt time offset if the receipt time offset is smaller than the system time offset.

Interactive secret sharing includes receiving video data from a source and interpreting the video data to track an observed path of a device. In addition, position information is received from the device, and the position information is interpreted to track a self-reported path of the device. If the observed path is within a threshold tolerance of the self-reported path, access is provided to a restricted resource.

Adapting trick commands to prior trick command usage is disclosed. In one example, during playback of a video content item, a user input of a sequence of trick commands is received that has a net effect on a playback location in the video content item, and in response to the sequence of trick commands, response to a later trick command is adapted based upon the net effect of the sequence of trick commands.

Asset resolvable bookmarks are described. In embodiments, a bookmark is received at a media content source from a client device. The bookmark corresponds to a media asset and includes an identifier of the media asset. Additional data can be added to the bookmark to generate an asset resolvable bookmark, where the additional data includes at least enough data from which a receiving client device can determine a media content source from which the media asset can be accessed for playback at the receiving client device.

Techniques involving an effect of gravity on gestures are described. In one or more implementations, the techniques describe gestures that are usable to provide inputs and therefore initiate operations of a computing device, such as a mobile communications device having telephone functionality. The techniques described herein may be employed to reduce an effect of gravity on an input that describes the gesture. A variety of different gestures are contemplated, such as gestures that are recognized as involving acceleration, e.g., acceleration.

In accordance with one or more aspects of the referencing data in triggers from applications, a device can store multiple triggers for media content. For each of these triggers, a check is made as to whether a presentation of media content satisfies a criteria portion of the trigger. When the presentation satisfies the criteria portion, one or more actions in a payload portion of the trigger are performed. Additionally, data in the triggers can be referenced by applications executing on the device. These applications include applications that are launched as part of the one or more actions when the criteria portion of a trigger is satisfied, as well as other applications executing on the device.

Controllable device selection based on controller location is described. In embodiments, a companion utility is executed by a portable device to interface the portable device with a selected one of multiple controllable devices via a wireless network. A location of the portable device can be determined based on a positioning unit that is integrated with the portable device. A controllable device can then be selected that is proximate the location of the portable device for input control of the controllable device via the wireless network.

In a computing device, both an address of a first device and a secret are graphically encoded to generate one or more images that can be captured by a second device. The second device captures and decodes the one or more images, and sends a communication initiation request to the address of the first device. The communication initiation request includes the address of the second device and identifies the secret. Communication between the first and second device continues only if the first device verifies, based on the communication initiation request, that the second device knows the secret.

Video content in an original markup language is processed and distributed for presentation such that the presentation preserves static and dynamic aspects of the video content in the original markup language. The video content in the original markup language may be processed into a binary format using a client-specific routine that is specific to a predetermined client. The distributed video content may be presented in a way that preserves the static and dynamic aspects of the video content in the original markup language.

Editable bookmarks shared via a social network are described. In embodiments, a bookmark is received from a client device at a media content service. The bookmark corresponds to a media asset and includes an identifier of the media asset. Metadata associated with the media asset is added to the bookmark to generate an editable bookmark. A bookmark invitation is also received from the client device, and the bookmark invitation is directed to social network contacts of a user of the client device. The editable bookmark can then be communicated to receiving client devices of the respective social network contacts identified by the bookmark invitation, and a receiving client device can initiate playback of the media asset that corresponds to the editable bookmark. Further, the editable bookmark can be updated when additional data associated with the media asset is received from a social network contact via a respective client device.

User-specific attribute customization is provided by an entertainment system including a user identification module to identify one or more users within an operative range of the entertainment system, and a dominant attribute module to automatically express exclusive user-specific attributes of a dominant user when the dominant user is one of two or more identified users within the operative range of the entertainment system. The entertainment system further includes a cooperative attribute module to automatically express merged user-specific attributes of a first user and a second user when the first user and the second user are two of two or more identified users within the operative range of the entertainment system.

In accordance with one or more aspects, a trigger corresponding to media content is retrieved from a storage device. The trigger includes a time-shift parameter identifying how much playback of the media content can be time-shifted while keeping the trigger valid. A determination is made, based at least in part on a current time and the time-shift parameter, whether the trigger is valid during playback of the media content.

Original instructions, regarding an original document having a structure (e.g., an object model), for combined static and dynamic aspects of layout, display and user-interface behavior, are converted from an original markup language and a styling language to a binary format by use of a compilation process. The compilation process is specific to both the markup and the styling languages. Alternatively, video content in any of various formats can be compiled into a binary format including one or more of layout, rendering, UI interaction, and dynamic aspects. The binary format is transmitted to a receiver with or without actual programming material, such as a television show. The received binary format is decoded for display and user interaction so as to be consistent with the original instructions. The binary format produced by the compilation process preserves the original document structure so that, after the decoding, the binary format can be manipulated.
