A system for closing a blood vessel includes a housing having a proximal end and a distal end and configured to be held in the hand of a user, an elongate body extending from the distal end of the housing, a distal housing having a proximal end coupled to a distal end of the elongate body and having a cavity including an opening on a side of the distal housing, a lumen passing through the elongate body and terminating at the cavity of the distal housing and configured to couple to a vacuum source, a sensor carried by the distal housing adjacent the cavity and configured for identifying a blood vessel, wherein the lumen is configured to maintain a vacuum within the cavity when a probe having a vessel closure module is inserted within the lumen and the vessel closure module is within the cavity.

Systems and methods for closing portions of body tissue

A catheter includes an elongated body and an expandable member configured to expand radially outward away from the elongated body from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. The catheter further includes a retainer configured to overlap an end of the expandable member to hold the expandable member in the collapsed configuration. The expandable member may be configured to engage with a vessel wall when the expandable member is in the expanded configuration. The vessel may curve and the expandable member may be configured to deflect a portion of the elongated body distal to the expandable member when the expandable member is engaged with the vessel wall to better conform the shape of the elongated body to the curved portion of the vessel.

A method for manufacturing a catheter, includes forming a mandrel by arranging at least first and second elongate members in an at least partial longitudinal juxtaposed relation with respect to a longitudinal axis defined by the mandrel, mounting an inner liner having an internal surface about the mandrel, treating the inner liner whereby the first and second elongate members of the mandrel cause irregularities within the internal surface of the inner liner, positioning an outer member about the inner liner and removing at least the inner liner from the mandrel, thereby forming a catheter having the inner liner with irregularities.
