A data writer may be generally configured at least with a write pole that has a pole sidewall and a continuous first taper angle connecting leading and trailing edges. The write pole can be positioned adjacent to a side shield that is configured with first and second shield sidewalls tapered to a shield tip that is the closest point between the write pole and side shield.

A magnetic element may be generally configured with at least a write pole that has leading and trailing regions on an air bearing surface. The leading region may have a trailing width connected to a leading width of the trailing region via a transition feature to form a substantially T-shaped cross-section on the air bearing surface.

Data storage systems having barriers that may reduce erasure flux and increase write-ability are provided. Data storage systems include a writing element. The writing element has a write pole with a flare region. A magnetic flux barrier is located along the write pole flare region. The magnetic flux barrier is illustratively made from an in-plane magnetically anisotropic material that has an easy plane of magnetization. In another embodiment, a data storage system includes a writing element having an air bearing surface and a shield at the air bearing surface. The shield has a magnetic permeability of approximately zero. The shield illustratively includes alternating layers of positive and negative permeabilities. The shield optionally includes a plurality of shields that may include top, bottom, and side shields.

Magnetic flux barrier

An apparatus may be constructed with a magnetic element, such as a data transducing head. A first permanent magnet may be configured to bias the write pole to decrease remnant magnetization and erasure after write (EAW). The first permanent magnet can be separated from the write pole be a predetermined distance.

A writer assembly having two separately driven write coils allows a combined write field generated by the writer assembly to be fine turned and optimized for a particular application. Two preamplifiers may be incorporated into a printed circuit board in order to separately drive the write coils. In other implementations, there may be more than two write coils and corresponding preamplifiers.

An apparatus is provided that generally relates to a data writer that may be constructed with a write pole coupled to a yoke. The yoke may be configured with a stabilizing layer that stabilizes magnetic domains present in the yoke. In some embodiments, the yoke has first and second sub-yokes.

A write element including a pole tip shield is disclosed. In embodiments disclosed, for example, the pole tip shield includes side shield portions fabricated of a graded magnetic moment material to form graded side shield portions having a magnetic moment that decreases in the down-track direction along a length of the side shield portions. In another embodiment, the pole tip shield includes side shield portions having a shortened length extending along a partial length of side edges of the pole tip. In illustrated embodiments, the side shield portions are formed of a contoured body having an indented portion forward of the leading edge of the pole tip. The indented portion has a rounded indented surface contour forming a rounded profile for a gap region between a leading edge portion of the pole tip shield forward of the leading edge of the pole tip.

A write pole can have a magnetically conductive pole tip has at least one corner. The at least one corner may be chamfered to limit magnetic saturation of the conductive pole tip. The conductive pole tip can have one or more beveled surface that has a chamfered corner which extends a predetermined distance along an edge of the write pole.

A recording head comprising a write pole and a coil structure asymmetric with respect to the write pole and configured to generate more magnetic flux on a trailing side of the main pole than the magnetic flux on a front side of the main pole.

A magnetic shield is adjacent a write pole. The write pole has a body portion with a body thickness and an extension portion with parallel first and second sides that each tilt towards the magnetic shield at a predetermined angle proximal to an air bearing surface (ABS). The extension portion may be capable of enhancing a write field gradient of the magnetic shield by reducing magnetic saturation.
