A method for an aircraft may include determining a transition from an airplane mode to a helicopter mode for a propulsion system of the aircraft, wherein the propulsion system comprises a plurality of rotor blades; determining whether a descent rate condition is satisfied, wherein the descent rate condition is associated with a maximum allowable descent rate for the aircraft; and controlling a collective pitch angle for the plurality of rotor blades based on the descent rate condition.

System and method to provide descent rate limiting for an aircraft

Systems and methods include providing a coaxial helicopter with a main rotor system having an upper rotor system, a coaxial counter-rotating lower rotor system, and a rotor mast assembly having an upper rotor mast and a coaxial counter-rotating lower rotor mast. The upper rotor system and an associated upper vibration reduction system are coupled to the upper rotor mast. The upper vibration reduction system provides in-plane vibration control and reduction to the upper rotor system. The lower rotor system and an associated lower vibration reduction system are coupled to the lower rotor mast. The lower vibration reduction system provides in-plane vibration control and reduction to the lower rotor system. A third vibration reduction system is coupled to the rotor mast assembly and cooperates with the upper and lower vibration reduction systems to provide total in-plane vibration control and reduction to the main rotor system.

Hub mounted vibration reduction system for coaxial rotor systems

A multirotor aircraft comprises at least three proprotors. Each proprotor has a plurality of rotor blades pivotably attached to a mast assembly. When a rotor blade pitch angle is changed for a proprotor, all rotor blades on the proprotor change to a same pitch angle. The proprotors are configured to spin freely when a power source is disengaged or fails. In various embodiments, one or more engines provides power to each proprotor, or at least one engine provides power to two or more proprotors. A rotor blade control system is configured to control a collective rotor blade pitch angle on each proprotor independently of the rotor blade pitch on the other proprotors. The rotor blade control system is configured to set a negative collective rotor blade pitch angle on an unpowered proprotor, such as in response to manual inputs by a pilot or in response to current engine conditions.

A quad tiltrotor aircraft has a longitudinally extending fuselage with forward and aft stations. A forward wing having first and second outboard ends extends laterally from the forward station. An aft wing having first and second outboard ends extends laterally from the aft station. First and second forward rotors are respectively coupled proximate the first and second outboard ends of the forward wing and are tiltable relative to the forward wing between vertical lift and forward thrust orientations. First and second aft rotors are respectively coupled proximate the first and second outboard ends of the aft wing and are tiltable relative to the aft wing between vertical lift and forward thrust orientations. The forward rotors are higher disk-loading rotors than the aft rotors. The aft rotors are foldable in the forward flight mode to provide extended range for the quad tiltrotor aircraft.

Extended range quad tiltrotor aircraft

An aircraft has a fuselage, a first rotor assembly having a first rotor hub and first rotor blades pivotably coupled to the first rotor hub and a second rotor assembly having a second rotor hub and second rotor blades pivotably coupled to the second rotor hub. The first and second rotor blades have deployed configurations extending generally radially from the fuselage and stowed configurations extending generally parallel with the fuselage. A sequencing cam, positioned between the first and second rotor hubs, is coupled to the second rotor blades. The sequencing cam has a retracted orientation when the second rotor blades are in the stowed configuration and an extended orientation when the second rotor blades are in the deployed configuration in which the sequencing cam props support arms of the first rotor blades preventing transition of the first rotor blades from the deployed configuration to the stowed configuration.

A rotor blade including a root portion adapted to be connected to a helicopter rotor hub for rotation therewith, the root portion having a first edge surface; a first movable member having a first movable surface adjacent to the first edge surface; a first elastomeric joint disposed between the root portion and the first movable member, the first elastomeric joint having an inner surface facing the first edge surface of the root portion and an outer surface facing the movable surface of the first movable member; and an actuating system mounted within the root portion and the first movable member for moving the first movable member. The first elastomeric joint deforms to adjust for shear from actuation of the first movable member to a first position during helicopter mode; and to a second position during airplane mode.
