A magnetic head includes an inductive coil electrically partitioned into a plurality of segments by a plurality of conductive leads. During the data reading mode, magnetic flux changes emanating from a record medium are sensed by the magnetic head. The inductive coil transduces the magnetic flux changes into electrical signals at the conductive leads. The signals are amplified by serially cascading the plurality of segments and the signals are then fed into amplifiers. During the data writing mode, the electrical signal is applied to two of the conductive leads via a data writing amplifier. The inductive coil converts the electrical signal into changes in magnetic flux for recording onto a magnetic medium.

A magnetic head includes aligned pole tips and a coil proximally disposed between a pair of first and second magnetic yoke layers which define a closed magnetic path with a transducing gap. The second magnetic yoke layer includes a flat geometry with a substantially level cross-sectional profile. The second yoke layer with less curvature results in less mutual inductance with the coil. Furthermore, the coil can be closely positioned between the first and second yoke layer, thereby allowing the coil to be more efficient in inducing magnetic flux in the yoke layers during data writing, and allowing the intercepted flux to induce current into the coil during data reading if the magnetic head is used as an inductive head.

A magnetic thin film head of the planar geometry type has a dielectric member located between facing ends of pole members in the gap region. The thickness of at least one of the pole members in the gap region is reduced by the dielectric member relative to the thickness of the remainder of the pole members. This dielectric member in the region of reduced thickness functions to increase the density of the magnetic flux in that region during recording, thereby improving the write capability of the head.

A magnetic thin film recording head includes laminated magnetic pole members, adjacent pole members being separated from each other by nonmagnetic insulating layers to reduce eddy current effects between the laminated members. The nonmagnetic insulating layers extend from the throat region of the head toward the pole tip region and terminate at a distance from the air bearing surface which is a function of the skin depth of the magnetic pole material for the particular recording frequency range being employed in the head.

Optically or visually perceptible lapping and grinding patterns are provided in a thin film transducer structure by depositing conductive material both between the magnetic pole pieces and, external to such pole pieces. The conductive material between the pole pieces is so positioned as to determine the zero throat point of the transducer and is in predetermined aligned relationship with the external pattern by, for example, being formed during a single masking step.
