Systems and methods for ablating tissue in the living body can include a cool electrode.

Cool RF electrode

This invention relates to high-frequency ablation of tissue in the body using a cooled high-frequency electrode connected to a high frequency generator including a computer graphic control system and an automatic controller for control the signal output from the generator, and adapted to display on a real time graphic display a measured parameter related to the ablation process and visually monitor the variation of the parameter of the signal output that is controlled by the controller during the ablation process. In one example, one or more measured parameters are displayed simultaneously to visually interpret the relation of their variation and values. In one example, the displayed one or more parameters can be taken from the list of measured voltage, current, power, impedance, electrode temperature, and tissue temperature related to the ablation process. The graphic display gives the clinician an instantaneous and intuitive feeling for the dynamics and stability of the ablation process for safety and control. This invention relates to monitoring and controlling multiple ground pads to optimally carry return currents during high-frequency tissue ablation, and to prevent of ground-pad skin burns. This invention relates to the use of ultrasound imaging intraoperatively during a tissue ablation procedure. This invention relates to the use of nerve stimulation and blocking during a tissue ablation procedure.

A method and system for shaping a beam from a radiation delivery device includes a moving miniature multi-leaf collimator which can be moved into the field of radiation from the radiation device to shape the beam or moved out of the radiation field of the radiation device so that a second collimator can shape the beam. The movable miniature multi-leaf collimator comprises opposing banks of movable leaves to form a conformal shape when the collimator is within the radiation field. A translation or rotation mechanism can move the left and right leaf banks at the collimator away from and displaced significantly from the radiation beam of the radiation delivery device so that they will not intercept the radiation field. A second collimator device is then used to produce another independent beam shaping within the radiation field of the radiation device. The miniature multi-leaf collimator is adapted to be so displaced into and away from the radiation field without being physically removed from the radiation device.

A high frequency generator system with a computer graphic two-dimensional user-interactable interface is achieved to allow selection of menus associated with the function, state, and output parameters of the high frequency generator system. A two-dimensional graphics display is coupled directly or remotely to a high frequency power source system which is further connected to electrodes in contact or proximity to the tissue of a patient's body. A two-dimensional display allows the user to see, in a compact, convenient, and comprehensive way, selection menus for use of the high frequency generator system, control of its parameters, monitoring of its processes during clinical application, and graphics displays related to historic or current image scan data and real-time monitoring of output parameters related to the application. Pre-set or user-selectable arrays of parameters can be selected through the two-dimensional user interface to the high frequency generator system. Real-time plotting of single or multiple output parameters as a function of time course during the clinical application can be graphically displayed on the two-dimensional display. Digital displays, alphanumeric streams of information, help menus, prompts, and sequences of menus may be selected by the two-dimensional interface through actuators on the interface or on the panel of the high frequency generator system. Several forms of the interface, user actuators, screen layouts, and methods for use of this system accommodate the specific objectives.

Method and system for menu-driven two-dimensional display lesion generator

A probe is connected to a probe carrier that is positioned with respect to the body of a patient. The probe is moved into or out of the body incrementally by means of a driver mechanism and flexible coupler. The flexible coupler in one embodiment comprises a flexible sheath with a flexible driver shaft that can be passed within the flexible sheath and can be rotated or pushed forward and backward with respect to the sheath by a driver element thereby causing translational movement of probe. Several forms of probes, flexible coupling elements, and driver apparatus as well as methods of applications accommodate specific objectives.
