Dynamic subscriber interfaces in a network device are provided. An input port receives data units from multiple subscribers. A primary interface extracts source identifiers from headers associated with the received data units and creates dynamic subscriber interfaces to allocate network device resources to each of the multiple subscribers based on the extracted source identifiers.

Techniques are described for reducing the amount of data traffic carried on inter-chassis links within a multi-chassis router. A multi-chassis router is described in which the packet forwarding engines (PFEs) of each chassis receive and modify forwarding structures, generated in accordance with various load-balancing protocols, to exhibit a chassis-local link preference. Each of the PFEs may implement a selection bias for forwarding paths that egress from the multi-chassis router at the member chassis that includes the ingress PFE.

A media gateway is coupled to an Internet Protocol (IP) network through a router. The router and the media gateway communicate through a slim protocol that allows the media gateway to reserve connections over the IP network that have certain minimum bandwidth and latency attributes. The router handles the obtaining of the requested IP circuit for the client. The media gateways only need to execute a relatively simple client application and do not have to be independently capable of obtaining IP-QoS information from the IP network.

A method and system merging a file across multiple versions of the file is provided. A file check-in request is identified. A merge candidate associated with the file is automatically identified. A view associated with the identified merge candidate is automatically identified. The file is merged with the merge candidate in the view, resulting in a merge result.

Techniques are described for dynamically configuring an interface in a network service provider. The techniques allow dynamic configuration of, for example, a dual stacked interface that includes both Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) on the same layer 2 link. In this way, a customer network having an existing IPv4 connection to a network service provider will be able to run both IPv4 and IPv6 over the same interface. A network device within the network service provider may receive a control packet from a subscriber device. The packet may be received on an ATM hybrid permanent virtual circuit (PVC) that supports multiple interface columns. The network device is capable of auto-sensing multiple packet protocols and may dynamically create multiple interface columns over the same ATM interface based on the encapsulation type of the received packets.

Multiple subscriber devices are connected to a network device via one or more network switches. The network device transmits multicast traffic to the subscriber devices. In particular, the network device may receive membership requests for a multicast group from the subscriber devices via the network switch on a first interface, i.e., a mapping interface. The network device sends a multicast stream associated with the multicast group to the network switch on a second interface, i.e. an outgoing interface (OIF). Upon receiving a membership request, the network device maps the membership request to an OIF dedicated to the multicast group. In this way, when multiple subscriber devices connected to the same switch request the same multicast stream, each membership request will map to the same OIF. The network device sends one copy of the multicast stream to the network switch on the dedicated OIF.

Techniques are described for centralized management of quality of service (QoS) characteristics of network data flows. A service management system maintains a database that associates access information, such as a username and password, with QoS information. A router or other network device associates a data flow with access information, and queries the service management system with the access information to obtain the QoS information. The router forwards data of the data flow in accordance with the QoS information obtained from the service management system. As the access information may be a username and password, an existing system, such as a Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) system, may easily be adapted for use as the service management system. As a result, QoS information may easily be centrally managed for numerous routers or other network devices.

Techniques are described for multicast content usage data collection and accounting within a network device. For example, the network device, such as a router, comprises an interface card to receive requests from one or more consumer devices. The requests specify actions concerning multicast content. The requests may include a join request that allows a consumer to join a multicast group and consume content provided by that group, a leave request that allows a user to leave a multicast group and the like. The network device further includes a routing engine to asynchronously collect the requests and create a multicast usage report. The multicast usage report describes multicast content usage by each of the consumer devices. Content providers may access the usage report and derive accounting information from the usage report to update consumer accounts based on the derived accounting information.
