An electrochemical cell having a cell package made of a metallic material to allow the cell package to be sealed by welding, even when contaminated. The electrochemical cell further includes an electrode cell stack and a metallic cell package having a base portion and a lid portion which are welded to each other (peripheral seam) to define an enclosure. The cell package includes a first section for receiving the cell stack and a second section having an inlet port and a degassing port which communicate with the first section. The lid portion is welded to the base portion to form a weld seam located between the first and second sections to seal off the first section from the second section. The weld seam extends from the peripheral seam on a first side of the cell package to the peripheral seam on a second side of the cell package.

A cell package is made of a laminate which can be heat sealed even when the cell package is contaminated with electrolyte. The laminate includes a polyester outer layer, an aluminum barrier layer and a polypropylene inner layer which are adhered together by an adhesive which does not break down in the presence of electrolyte.

Cell package

According to an exemplary embodiment a polyvinylidene diflouride homopolymer and solvent, such as acetone, are mixed together to form a solution. The solution is coated on a porous electrode. The coated electrode is immersed in a bath, such as denatured Ethanol, thereby creating a porous membrane on the electrode. The membrane coated electrode is then dried. After drying membrane coated electrode is placed opposite another porous electrode with the membrane positioned substantially between the first and second electrodes. The membrane is compressed between the electrodes dry bonding the membrane with the other electrode thereby forming a good physical bound. Alternatively the membrane may be formed on both electrodes and the membranes are then compressed between the electrodes thereby dry bonding the first and second electrodes together. In yet another embodiment the membrane may be formed separately then compressed between the electrodes thereby dry bonding the membrane with the two electrodes.
