A nose cone assembly is provided comprising a nose cone, a support ring on which the nose cone is mounted, and an insulating layer disposed between the nose cone and the support ring, the insulating layer at least partially comprising glass fibres. A composite nose cone is also provided comprising an attachment region A, in which composite fibres are oriented substantially perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the nose cone, and an impact region I, in which composite fibres are oriented substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the nose cone. Also provided is a support ring for a nose cone assembly, the support ring comprising an annular main body and an annular projecting attachment flange, the attachment flange terminating in a plurality of circumferentially spaced attachment tabs, wherein the attachment flange forms with the main body a cross section having at least two C curves.

Nose cone assembly

A damped assembly within a gas turbine, comprising a first member and a second member mechanically connected via an intermediate vibration dampener which has at least first and second surfaces for contacting the first and second members respectively, wherein either or both of the first and second surfaces include a plurality of raised portions in direct contact with the respective member and a plurality of recessed portions which contain adhesive for bonding the intermediate vibration dampener to the respective member.

Damped assembly

A composite has a laminar core assembly defining a bend, the bend having a radially inner surface defining a fillet. A reinforcement block adjacent to the radially inner surface of the bend has sufficient thickness to at least partly bury the fillet. The reinforcement block reduces the through-thickness tensile stress in the laminar core assembly and thereby reduces the risk of delamination.

Composite structure

Aerofoils () of a gas turbine engine are provided with a coating () or filler () of viscoelastic material. As ice accretes on the aerofoils () during operation, the resulting aerodynamic stability imbalance induces vibration in the aerofoils (). The viscoelastic material () damps this vibration, and in so doing generates heat, which melts the ice away from the aerofoils (). Heat-conducting members conduct the heat to regions of the component in which ice accretion is to be prevented. Alternative embodiments are described in which the pseudoelastic behavior of a shape memory alloy (), or eddy currents arising from the rotor blades' rotation in an axisymmetric magnetic field, are used as sources of heat.
