A network interface card (NIC) receives a stream of commands, a respective command comprising memory-operation requests, each request associated with a destination NIC. The NIC buffers asynchronously the requests into queues based on the destination NIC, each queue specific to a corresponding destination NIC. When first queue requests reach a threshold, the NIC aggregates the first queue requests into a first packet and sends the first packet to the destination NIC. The NIC receives a plurality of packets, a second packet comprising memory-operation requests, each request associated with a same destination NIC and a destination core. The NIC buffers asynchronously the requests of the second packet into queues based on the destination core, each queue specific to a corresponding destination core. When second queue requests reach the threshold, the NIC aggregates the second queue requests into a third packet and sends the third packet to the destination core.

Aggregating small remote memory access requests

A network interface controller (NIC) capable of efficient packet injection into an output buffer is provided. The NIC can be equipped with an output buffer, a plurality of injectors, a prioritization logic block, and a selection logic block. The plurality of injectors can share the output buffer. The prioritization logic block can determine a priority associated with a respective injector based on a high watermark and a low watermark associated with the injector. The selection logic block can then determine, from the plurality of injectors, a subset of injectors associated with a buffer class and determine whether the subset of injectors includes a high-priority injector. Upon identifying a high-priority injector in the subset of injectors, the selection logic block can select the high-priority injector for injecting a packet in the output buffer.

System and method for facilitating efficient packet injection into an output buffer in a network interface controller (NIC)

An improved method for the prevention of deadlock in a massively parallel processor (MPP) system wherein, prior to a process sending messages to another process running on a remote processor, the process allocates space in a deadlock-avoidance FIFO. The allocated space provides a 'landing zone' for requests that the software process (the application software) will subsequently issue using a remote-memory-access function. In some embodiments, the deadlock-avoidance (DLA) function provides two different deadlock-avoidance schemes: controlled discard and persistent reservation. In some embodiments, the software process determines which scheme will be used at the time the space is allocated.

A novel system and method for processing memory instructions. One embodiment of the invention provides a method for processing a memory instruction. In this embodiment, the method includes obtaining a memory request; storing the memory request in an Initial Request Queue (IRQ); and processing the memory request from the IRQ by a cache controller, wherein processing includes: identifying a type of the memory request, and processing the memory request in both a local cache and an Force Order Queue (FOQ), wherein processing includes determining if a portion of an address associated with the memory request matches one or more partial addresses in the FOQ and, if the memory request misses in the cache and the address does not match one or more partial addresses in the FOQ, adding the memory request to the FOQ and allocating a cache line in the local cache corresponding to the local cache miss.

In a computer system having a scalar processing unit and a vector processing unit, wherein the vector processing unit includes a vector dispatch unit, a system and method of decoupling operation of the scalar processing unit from that of the vector processing unit, the method comprising sending a vector instruction from the scalar processing unit to the vector dispatch unit, wherein sending includes marking the vector instruction as complete if the vector instruction is not a vector memory instruction and if the vector instruction does not require scalar operands, reading a scalar operand, wherein reading includes transferring the scalar operand from the scalar processing unit to the vector dispatch unit, predispatching the vector instruction within the vector dispatch unit if the vector instruction is scalar committed, dispatching the predispatched vector instruction if all required operands are ready, and executing the dispatched vector instruction as a function of the scalar operand.

Decoupled scalar/vector computer architecture system and method

A common scalar/vector data cache apparatus and method for a scalar/vector computer. One aspect of the present invention provides a computer system including a memory. The memory includes a plurality of sections. The computer system also includes a scalar/vector processor coupled to the memory using a plurality of separate address busses and a plurality of separate read-data busses wherein at least one of the sections of the memory is associated with each address bus and at least one of the sections of the memory is associated with each read-data bus. The processor further includes a plurality of scalar registers and a plurality of vector registers and operating on instructions which provide a reference address to a data word. The processor includes a scalar/vector cache unit that includes a cache array, and a FIFO unit that tracks (a.) an address in the cache array to which a read-data value will be placed when the read-data value is returned from the memory, and (b.) a destination code that specifies which of the scalar registers and vector registers into which the read-data value is to be loaded when the read-data value is returned from the memory.

A client interface supporting a plurality of peripheral channels and a network channel. The peripheral channels include a maintenance channel, message input channel, message output channel, express channel and several DMA channels. The client interface routes packets from the network to the peripheral resources and prioritizes the dispatching of packets onto the network.
