A communications system includes a sender device configured to send data packets in accordance with a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to a receiver device. An intermediate device is coupled between the sender device and the receiver device and includes a wireless transceiver configured to provide a communications link between the sender device and the receiver device and wherein said communications link is susceptible to at least one of transmission delays and transmission errors. A controller is coupled to the wireless transceiver and configured to serve as a TCP proxy between the sender device and the receiver device by sending successive simulated TCP acknowledgements of delivery to the sender device starting at a delay time shorter than a TCP retransmission timeout period and increasing for each successive simulated TCP acknowledgement.

A communications device may include a wireless radio frequency (RF) transceiver, and a controller coupled to the wireless RF transceiver. The controller may be configured to determine received signal characteristics and perform a spectral estimation operation associated with a frequency spectrum on the received signal characteristics, determine a channel selection method characteristic associated with a channel in the frequency spectrum including channels, generate statistical values for each channel based upon the received signal characteristics, and select a portion of the frequency spectrum for a signal to be transmitted by the wireless RF transceiver based upon the spectral estimation operation, the statistical values, and the channel selection method characteristic.

Communications device with selective spectrum assignment and related methods

An HF communication system includes a first device, and a second device. The first device sends a message to the second device, the message including a preamble portion, a variable length data portion after the preamble portion having a given ending point selected from among potential ending points, and a check portion after the variable length data portion indicating an end of the message. The second device performs a decoding operation on the message at a potential ending point, and performs a check operation on a potential check portion of the decoded message, and when the check operation is successful, recovers the variable length data portion from the decoded message. Otherwise, the second device performs another decoding operation on the message at a next potential ending point, and performs another check operation on another potential check portion of the respective decoded message.

HF communication system with decoding operations and related methods

An HF radio ALE communication system may include a first HF radio communications device including a first HF radio transceiver and a first controller coupled thereto, and a second HF radio communications device including a second HF radio transceiver and a second controller coupled thereto. The first controller may cooperate with the first HF radio transceiver and may be configured to use ALE to establish a narrowband communication link with the second HF radio communications device, and to communicate a wideband message probe to the second HF radio communications device. The second controller may cooperate with the second HF radio transceiver and may be configured to determine at least one channel characteristic based upon the wideband message probe. The first controller may cooperate with the first HF radio transceiver and may be configured to update the narrowband communication link based upon the at least one channel characteristic.

High frequency automatic link establishment communication system with wideband probe and related method

A communications system includes a plurality of radios that form a CSMA wireless communications network to communicate none-packetized digital voice with each other. Each radio is operative for dividing the period following the end of a received transmission into a sequence of time slots, each having a duration at least equal to an effective end-to-end traffic latency. In each time slot, the radio decides randomly with probability p whether to start transmitting on the channel in that slot, provided that a new transmission has not been detected on the channel prior to the start of the slot.

P-persistent carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) for non-packetized wireless digital voice networks

A communications system includes a plurality of radios that form a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) wireless communications network and communicate non-packetized digital voice with each other. Each radio is operative for dividing the period following the end of a transmission into a sequence of time slots and determining whether an end of a conversation has occurred. If an end of a conversation has occurred, the system decides randomly or pseudo-randomly with probability p to start transmitting on the channel in that slot.

Carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) for non-packetized wireless digital voice networks using intelligent conversation boundary detection

Embodiments of a method and system for determining the presence or absence of a digital communication signal are disclosed. One embodiment of the inventive method comprises the steps of collecting a plurality of signal samples at a selected frequency for a known period of time, determining a metric dependent upon at least one measured characteristic associated with the collected signal samples, and indicating signal status as present when said determined metric is greater than a known value. In another embodiment, the aforementioned method may indicate the signal status as absent when the determined metric is less than the known value. As should be appreciated, embodiments of the inventive method may be used to determine the known value by determining the metric performance for a plurality of samples for a plurality of signal conditions.

Method and apparatus for detection of signal without the aid of training sequence

The communication method and system include wirelessly transmitting a data packet from a first node to a plurality of second nodes to define a wireless multicast transmission. Each second node determines whether the data packet was received with errors and if so transmits a negative acknowledgement (NAK) to the first node in a common allocated NAK time slot for the second nodes. The first node retransmits the data packet to the second nodes based upon receiving the NAK from any second node. The method and system may include measuring propagation delay between the first node and each of the plurality of second nodes, or measuring a maximum propagation delay between the first node and the plurality of second nodes, to determine the common allocated NAK time slot.
