A sheath introducer for a catheter includes a sheath having a lumen, a hub positioned on a proximal end of the sheath, and a housing positioned on the hub. The hub can include a splittable penetration member having a port in fluid communication with the sheath lumen. The housing can include a valve having a closed upper surface and a channel surrounding the splittable penetration member. Movement of the housing with respect to the hub can expose the port of the splittable penetration member for insertion of the catheter.

Tear-away and non-tear-away sheath introducers for catheters, methods for making such introducers, and methods for using such introducers are described. The sheath introducers contain movable valves that are encapsulated in a movable housing unlike conventional valves that are stationary. The movable housing allows the valve to move along the axis of the introducer. As the movable valve and housing travel along the axis, a portion of the hub protrudes past the valve and is exposed. The protruding portion of the hub contains a friction-free pathway for the catheter into the sheath introducer. The introducers can therefore be used with any catheter, regardless of the size or material, because of the reduced or eliminated frictional force between the catheter and introducer.

Tear-away sheath introducers for catheters, methods for making such introducers, and methods for using such introducers are described. A splittable sheath introducer may include a sheath, a hub disposed at a proximal end of the sheath, a valve included with the hub, and a valve actuator movable from a first position to a second position, the valve actuator opening the valve when in the second position. The valve actuator may include a retaining feature that interacts with the hub to connect the retaining member to the hub.

A method of making a sheath introducer may include providing a splittable sheath, attaching a splittable hub to the proximal end of the splittable sheath, the splittable hub including a cavity having a threaded section and a valve disposed in the cavity, and disposing a valve actuator in the cavity, the valve actuator including threads on an external surface thereof threadably engaged with the hub along the threaded section of the cavity, the valve actuator opening the valve upon rotation of the valve actuator from a first position, in which a bottom surface of the valve actuator is proximal to an upper surface of the valve, to a second position, in which the bottom surface of the valve actuator is distal to the upper surface of the valve.

An introducer for providing intravascular access to a patient is disclosed, and includes a dilator and sheath that are configured to prevent peelback, or 'fishmouthing,' of the sheath during introducer advancement. In one embodiment, the introducer comprises a dilator including a distal tapered region, and a sheath including an inner bore that receives the dilator such that a portion of the tapered region of the dilator extends from the sheath distal end. A distal outer surface of the sheath includes a first curved portion defined by a first radius and extending proximally from the distal end of the sheath to a first end point, and a second curved portion defined by a second radius and extending proximally from the first end point to a second end point. Additionally, an interference fit is established between the dilator tapered region and the sheath distal end to further prevent sheath end deformation.

Tunneling systems and methods or making and using such systems for implanting biological devices, especially catheters, are described. The tunneling system of the invention contains flexible connection tunnelers that contain multiple connection features that are of dissimilar lengths. When used for a multiple lumen catheter, the connection features are easier to separate and are easier to connect with the lumens of the catheter that are in different positions relative to the tunneler. Thus, the tunneling system contains a non-destructive connection between the catheter tip and the tunneler, as well as allowing for greater control during placement of the catheter.

A hose clamp identification marker for selectively identifying contents of a flexible hose. The hose clamp identification marker may be implemented in connection with a hose clamp and may comprise an open channel configured to straddle a hose. In this manner, the hose clamp identification marker of the present invention may be introduced to and removed from the hose clamp without disrupting continuity of treatment or requiring disassembly of the connection between the hose and a delivery device, such as a hollow needle.

A hand-held gynecologic instrument for use in manipulating a uterus comprises an elongate body and a handle with a contour. An actuating lever used to control uterine movement is operable by the same hand that grips the handle. A uterus manipulation member pivotally connected to the elongate body comprises a tube formed with a shallow curve and fitted with an elastomeric tip and an irrigation conduit. The tube is releasably connected to a pivot block which has a tapered bore. A tapered bushing which mates with the bore is disposed about the tube. The tube and bushing are releasably secured by a nut to permit alteration of the effective length and rotational position of the tube to accommodate different uteruses. The pivot block is pivotally connected to the elongate body and to one end of a rod. The rod's other end is pivotally connected to the actuating lever to translate movement of the actuating lever into pivotal movement of the pivot block and hence into rotation of the tube about the anteverting axis. A membrane disposed about the tube is inflatable to exert resilient pressure for retaining the instrument in place without a tenaculum. A lever lock for locking the actuating lever comprises a biased member which has a prong for engaging teeth on the actuating lever. An adjacent cam member which includes a thumb-operable extension is used in moving the prong in and out of engagement with the teeth.

An apparatus for clamping, cutting, and collecting a blood sample from an umbilical cord is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing for receiving and entrapping a section of umbilical cord. The housing is formed by a lid and a handle connected at a hinge. Upon closing the lid, the umbilical cord is clamped with a clamp removably connected to the housing. A slidable blade assembly cuts the umbilical cord using a slicing motion. A blood collection chamber located in the handle collects blood from the cut umbilical cord. A fluid passageway connects the blood collection chamber to one or more blood containers. An absorbent gasket surrounds the blood collection chamber in the handle for collecting and retaining excess blood that may exceed the capacity of the collection chamber. A placenta clamp is provided for gripping or clamping the placenta side of the umbilical cord after it has been cut.
