Disclosed is a water heater that has a water storage tank, a first pass flue tube extending from a top of the water storage tank to a bottom of the water storage tank, a down-fired burner assembly positioned to direct combustion gases into the first pass flue tube, a plurality of second pass flue tubes extending from the bottom of the water storage tank to a top of the water storage tank, and an expansion chamber positioned below the bottom of the water storage tank. The expansion chamber receives the combustion gases from the first pass flue tube and delivers the combustion gases to the second pass flue tubes. The water heater operates with a non-positive vent static pressure and with a vent gas temperature that avoids or reduces excessive condensate production in an exhaust vent connected to receive combustion gases from the water heater.

A water heater is provided that includes a tank for storing water and a combustion chamber in thermal communication with the tank for heating the water. The combustion chamber contains a pilot burner and at least one main burner. The water heater also includes a flue containing a flue damper to control the passage of exhaust gases from said combustion chamber. The water heater further includes an electrical control circuit connected to said flue damper. The electrical control circuit includes a thermal switch positioned proximal to the main burner The thermal switch is configured to prevent the flue damper from closing while the main burner is firing.

A method of manufacturing a combustion chamber for use in a water heater is provided. A skirt is formed, and an edge portion of a plate is spot welded to the skirt. The edge portion of the plate is circumferentially welded to the skirt, thereby forming a seal between the plate and the skirt.

The present invention is directed towards a water heater having a combustion chamber and a water tank positioned adjacent to the combustion chamber. The water tank has a flue tube extending through or surrounded by the water tank and has an upstream end positioned to receive combustion gases from the combustion chamber and a downstream end positioned to exhaust the combustion gases. The flue tube also has a wall that extends between the upstream and downstream ends. The wall of the flue tube has an inner surface defining a combustion gas passage and an outer surface positioned to contact water received in said water tank. The walls have convolutions along at least a portion of their length and are configured to reduce laminar flow of the water adjacent the outer surface of flue tube, thereby providing increased heat transfer between the combustion gases in the flue tube and the water in the water tank.

A foam dam is provided for use with a water heater having a tank and a jacket together defining an annular region. The foam dam includes a central region having a surface configured to cover a component coupled to the tank. The foam dam also includes a perimeter region extending from the central region. The perimeter region of the foam dam defines a surface to at least substantially traverse the annular region between the tank and jacket of the water heater. The perimeter region is configured to substantially prevent foam insulation from flowing into an area proximate to the component.

A gas-fired water heater is provided with a combustion shutoff system which precludes further combustion within the water heater's combustion chamber in response to a combustion temperature therein reaching a predetermined level correlated to and indicative of a predetermined, undesirably high concentration of carbon monoxide present in the combustion chamber. In various illustrated embodiments thereof, the combustion shutoff system is operative to terminate further combustion air inflow to the combustion chamber, or terminate further fuel flow to the burner portion of the water heater.

A gas-fired water heater has a combustion chamber with a bottom wall defined by a perforated flame arrestor plate forming a portion of a flow path through which combustion air may be supplied to a burner structure within the combustion chamber. During firing of the water heater a combustion air shutoff system having a heat-frangible temperature sensing structure disposed within the combustion chamber senses an undesirable temperature increase in the combustion chamber, caused by for example a partial blockage of the flow path, and responsively terminates further air flow into the combustion chamber, thereby shutting down the burner, prior to the creation in the combustion chamber of a predetermined elevated concentration of carbon monoxide.

The present invention is directed to a water heater that sustains energy during the standby mode so that it can power energy saving devices while e minimizing energy loss and controlling the stored water temperature. The present invention may include an outer casing, an insulated tank containing flue tubes, a combustion chamber, a burner rack containing a pilot and thermopile assembly, a flue collector, a damper and a draft diverter. These components are preferrably arranged to enable heat from the main burners to be transferred in an efficient manner to the water when needed and heat loss from the water to be minimized when the main burners are not fired. This may be accomplished without the use of external electric power, and the energy producing and heat transferring components of the water heater are optimally balanced, resulting in a sustained energy level that minimizes heat loss, prevents unwanted increases in water temperature, and enables the use of a damper without external electrical power.
