A sternal closure system for closing an opening in a sternum includes an implant and a plate pair comprised of first and second plates. The first and second plates secure with the sternum across the opening. The implant, in an insertion shape, inserts through the first and second plates and into the sternum across the opening, and then, upon a movement toward a natural shape, holds the opening closed while interconnecting the first and second plates. The sternal closure system alternatively includes an implant with a bridge having first and second apertures and first and second legs extending from the bridge. The implant, in an insertion shape, inserts into the sternum across the opening, and then, upon a movement toward a natural shape, holds the opening in the sternum closed. The implant, at the first and second apertures, receives fixation devices therethrough that engage the sternum.

The retension compression devices are designed for utilization with orthopedic cable to maintain tension in the orthopedic cable upon placement periprosthetically. A screw guide includes a first end, a second end spaced from the first end, a guide body that extends from the first end to the second end, and a guide hole that extends through the guide body. The guide body includes a first guide surface and a second guide surface, the first guide surface defines a first opening of the guide hole, and the second guide surface is spaced from the first guide surface in a first guide direction. The second guide surface defines a second opening of the guide hole, the guide body includes a leg portion that extends from the second guide surface in the first guide direction such that the leg portion is spaced from the second opening in a second guide direction that is perpendicular to the first guide direction.

Instrumentation and methods are provided for upper jaw correction surgery. The application discloses an orthopedic system and method that can be used to perform both a first distraction (for example a maxillary distraction) and a second distraction (for example a maxillary expansion) within the same surgical procedure. The instrumentation for separating first and second bone segments can include a first footplate; a second footplate; an actuator arranged to vary a distance between the first and second footplates; and a hinge that rotatably attaches the first and second footplates such that the first and second footplates can be angularly adjusted relative to each other about a pivot axis. Additionally, instrumentation and methods are provided for a hinged fixation device capable of securing and adjusting both the linear separation and angular orientation of bone structures.

A pair of forceps includes a first arm extending from a proximal end to a distal end and a second arm extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the second arm connected to the first arm at a pivot point in combination with a first leaf spring coupled to an inner surface of the first arm at a first attachment point and curved toward the second arm and a switch coupled to an inner surface of the second arm and having a switch opening extending therethrough receiving the first leaf spring to form a ratchet mechanism maintaining a desired position of as the first and second arms relative to one another as they are radially compressed to a grasping configuration.
