An object oriented framework mechanism provides a straightforward and convenient way to implement metering within an object-oriented computer program for any type of program that needs to be metered. The object metering framework includes core function and extensible function. Core classes and core class relationships define the core function of the framework mechanism. The extensible function is defined by extensible classes that can be extended by a programmer to implement a desired metering environment. The framework provides consistent programmer interfaces over a wide variety of different metering environments, which greatly enhances programmer efficiency and which makes the resultant code much easier to maintain.

Object oriented framework mechanism for metering objects

A license key with method of implementation is disclosed. The license key is used for accessing a licensed product on an enterprise computer system. Typically, the enterprise computer system includes a plurality of computer systems, but the computer systems are not necessarily interconnected. A first identifier code from the enterprise computer system, such as the system serial number, is used for allowing the license key to identify the enterprise. A second identifier code from a computer within the enterprise system is used, which is typically a serial number from the computer to identify it to the license key as being part of the enterprise system. Lastly, a third identifier code is used, which is selected from the licensed product to be used on the enterprise system and is tied to the enterprise system number, thereby allowing the licensed program to be accessed on the enterprise system with only a single key, irrespective of the number of computers accessing the licensed program. The setup of the license key, along with calling the identifier codes from the enterprise system, each computer, and the license product, is performed by a license manager, which also provides other services based upon the license key. The license manager provides either usage control, access control, or both, based upon information generated by the license key and found within a product information packet provided with the licensed product and based upon the enterprise system.

Method and apparatus for software license management

A method and system for managing utilization of licensed program within a distributed data processing system having a number of local systems which minimizes the amount of network communication traffic required for such management. Each permitted use of a licensed program by a distributed data processing system is indicated by a use token which may be transferred to selected systems throughout the distributed data processing system. These use tokens are then periodically redistributed throughout the distributed data processing system in response to a requested usage by a particular system within the distributed data processing system. A use token transferred to a particular system is then maintained at that system upon completion of the usage until such time as a request for usage of the licensed program requires transfer of the use token to another system. In this manner the use tokens are effectively distributed throughout the distributed data processing system such that those systems most likely to request usage of the licensed program will maintain possession of the use tokens, minimizing network communication traffic.
