Disclosed is a compact optical source capable of emitting wavelengths (notably in the blue spectrum) which it is difficult for standard laser diodes to achieve. This source has a laser (or laser diode) emitting at a wavelength .lambda.oi, a non-linear medium (NLM) in which the phase matching condition is achieved at a wavelength .lambda.o.sub.a belonging to the set of .lambda.o.sub.i values, a mirror M.sub.l transparent at .lambda.o.sub.i /2 and reflective at .lambda.oi placed at output of the medium (NLM) By reinjecting wavelengths .lambda.oi.noteq..lambda.oa into the laser, it is possible to lock the emission of the laser to .lambda.oa and thus set up a high-powered optical source .lambda.o.sub.a /2. The device according to the invention is a frequency doubler comprising an optical index network which can be electrically controlled by two continuous electrodes, the network being created by the presence of (+P) polarization domains periodically separated by (-P) polarization domains, the electrodes being used to electrooptically compensate for variations in the index between the (+P) domains and (-P) domains.

Laser with coupled optical waveguides

Disclosed is a solid state rod laser, monolithically integrated with a generator of optic frequencoes different from the emission frequency of the laser. The laser diode pumped solid state laser device has a rod, the seat of the laser effect, made of a nonlinear optic material, by doping with a rare earth, and includes an optic waveguide made in the mass of said rod of doped nonlinear optic material, parallel to the axis of the rod, said optic waveguide cooperating with means for changing the optic frequency of the laser beam. A preferred application is the obtaining of a laser frequency that is double the fundamental frequency making it possible, in the case of a neodymium laser, to obtain a green radiation, for example in digital optic disk readers.

A miniature optical source which includes at least one thin film of active laser materials having, in addition, non-linear properties. A pump laser for emitting a beam of a wavelength allowing for the pumping of the thin film of active laser material perpendicularly to the plane of the thin film. Also, an optical cavity constituted by two mirrors whose coefficients of reflection are maximum at the laser wavelength of the active laser material is further provided. The miniature optical source may find particular application in a physically compact laser emitting in the visible spectrum.
