A spear gun safety device for shielding at least one spike of a spear is provided. The safety device may include a tube assembly having a firing end and an opposing handle end, forming a barrel through the length of the tube assembly, wherein the barrel is dimensioned and adapted to house the spear, including the at least one spike, but not including a perpendicularly joined band post. The tube assembly provides an elongated notch extending from the firing end toward the handle end, wherein the elongated notch is configured to guide the band post protruding therethrough. The tube assembly provides a pair of band connectors disposed near the firing end, each band connector straddling opposing sides of the elongate notch, whereby tension bands extend from the band connectors to the band post.

An optical module includes a base and a plurality of cooling fins mounted to the back surface of a printed wiring board used to support a number of opto-electronic devices. To optimize heat removal; the fins are mounted on the back surface in alignment with the opto-electronic devices mounted on the front surface. The module also includes a number of fiber-optic management features which are mounted on the wiring board or materially integrated with the base and cooling fins. By combining fiber-optic management features with a heat sink, on the opposite side of board-mounted opto-electronic components, the optical module achieves increased packaging density and functionality on a per volume basis compared with its conventional counterparts.

A fiber-optic cable guide includes first and second guide walls, one or more base support elements for connecting the guide walls, and a number of securing elements which extend from the guide walls along a top portion thereof. Each securing member preferably has a length which is shorter than the spacing between the guide walls. This difference in length substantially corresponds to the diameter of a fiber-optic cable. A fastener may be included on a bottom surface of one or more of the guide walls for attaching the guide to a mounting surface, which may be a printed circuit board. Furthermore, the guide walls may be conformed to traverse any desired path along the board.

A system for selectively recessing an electrical outlet includes a housing that has an opening. An outlet fixture has at least one receptacle for receiving an electrical plug. A guide within the housing receives the outlet fixture and permits the outlet fixture to be moved within the housing. A latch selectively holds the outlet fixture in a recessed position until the latch is released to permit the outlet fixture to return to a non-recessed position. A method of selectively recessing an electrical outlet includes receiving and inserting a plug into an electrical outlet body within a housing. The electrical outlet body is moved along guides into the housing. The electrical outlet body is stopped at a recessed position within the housing, and the electrical outlet body is restrained in a recessed position. The method further includes selectively returning the electrical outlet body to a position proximate to the front of the housing. In one embodiment, a terminal assembly is included so that the outlet body is electrically connected using flexible wiring between the outlet body and the terminal assembly. Alternatively, the outlet body is connected to the terminal assembly using pins or flexible contacts that are electrically engaged only when the outlet body is recessed.

A smart card stores secure data, such as monetary values, and selectively transfers the secure data to or receives the secure data from a compatible smart card. The smart card includes a data storage device that stores the secure data. An identification input system receives identification input from a user. Control circuitry is responsive to the identification input to transfer secure data into the data storage device from a compatible smart card or to transfer secure data out of the data storage device to a compatible smart card when the control system determines from the identification input that the transfer is authorized. A data transfer interface in an edge of one card couples directly to a like interface in a slot of the other card to enable the secure data to be transferred between the two cards when the two cards are moved relative to each other.

A smart card stores monetary values and selectively transfers monetary values to and receives monetary values from a compatible smart card. The smart card includes a data storage device that stores data representing monetary values. Control circuitry controls the transfer of the monetary values into the data storage device and controls the transfer of the monetary values out of the data storage device. A data transfer interface couples directly to a like interface on the compatible card to enable data to be transferred between the smart card and the compatible card. A system for electronic transfer of monetary values includes first and second smart cards. Each of the first and second smart cards includes a data storage device that stores data representing monetary values.
