Disclosed herein is a first composition comprising a trivalent chromium cation and an aqueous carrier. Also disclosed herein is a second composition comprising a permanganate anion and an aqueous carrier. Also disclosed herein is a system for treating a metal substrate comprising a first composition comprising a trivalent chromium cation and an aqueous carrier and optionally a second composition comprising a permanganate anion and an aqueous carrier. Also disclosed herein is a method of treating a metal substrate comprising contacting at least a portion of the substrate surface with a first composition comprising a trivalent chromium cation and an aqueous carrier and optionally contacting at least a portion of the substrate surface with a second composition comprising a permanganate anion and an aqueous carrier.

Systems and methods for treating a metal substrate

A curable film-forming composition is provided, comprising: (1) a curable, organic film-forming binder component; and (2) a corrosion inhibiting component comprising a lithium silicate, present in the curable film-forming composition in an amount of 0.1 to 4.5 percent lithium by weight. Also provided are coated metal substrates, including multilayer coated metal substrates, comprising the above composition. Also provided is a multilayer coated metal substrate comprising: (a) a metal substrate; (b) a first curable film-forming composition applied to said metal substrate; and (c) a second curable film-forming composition applied on top of at least a portion of the first curable film-forming composition. The first and second curable film-forming compositions in dependently comprise: (1) a curable, organic film-forming binder component; and (2) a corrosion inhibiting component comprising lithium silicate, magnesium oxide and/or an azole.

Curable film-forming compositions containing lithium silicates as corrosion inhibitors and multilayer coated metal substrates

A composition for application to a substrate comprising a carrier, a permanganate ion source, and a corrosion inhibitor comprising a rare earth ion, an alkali metal ion, an alkaline earth metal ion, and/or a transition metal ion is disclosed. A substrate or article including the composition for application to a substrate, and a method of treating a substrate comprising applying the composition to a substrate to form a permanganate treated surface of the substrate, and applying a lithium containing composition on the permanganate treated surface are also disclosed.

Permanganate based conversion coating compositions

A corrosion resistant pretreatment composition for coating a metal substrate is provided. The composition comprises an aqueous carrier, one or more Group IA metal ions, wherein at least one of the Group 1A metal ions comprises a lithium compound, a hydroxide; and a phosphate or a halide. A process for treating a metal substrate with a lithium based coating is also provided, as well as a process for treating a metal substrate with a non-chrome conversion coating process.

Compositions for application to a metal substrate

A composition for application to a metal substrate comprises an aqueous carrier, a hydroxide anion and/or a phosphate anion, and a corrosion inhibitor comprising an azole compound, a rare earth ion, an alkali earth metal ion, and/or a transition metal ion. A substrate or article includes the composition for application to a metal substrate and a coating on the composition. A method of fabricating a substrate comprises applying the composition to a substrate, allowing the composition to dry to form a dried composition, and applying a coating on the dried composition.

Alkaline cleaning compositions for metal substrates

A composition for application to a metal substrate comprises a sol-gel or a silane and a corrosion inhibitor. The corrosion inhibitor comprises a lithium ion and/or an azole compound. A coated substrate includes the composition for application to a metal substrate and a coating on the composition. A method of fabricating a coated substrate comprises applying the composition to a substrate, curing the composition to form a conversion coating, and applying a coating on the conversion coating.

Corrosion inhibiting sol-gel compositions

A composition for application to a metal substrate comprising at least one metallate compound comprising hexafluorzirconate, zirconyl nitrate, and/or yttrium nitrate is provided. The composition may further comprise additives that promote corrosion resistance of the metal substrate, or the adhesion of subsequent coatings, such as one or more rare earth element salts; allontoin, polyvinylpyrrolidone, surfactants, and other additives and co-inhibitors. A metal substrate such as an aluminum or an aluminum alloy substrate coated with a metallate composition according to the present invention is also provided. A process for preparing a coating on a metal substrate to improve the corrosion resistance of the substrate or improve the adhesion of a subsequent coating is also provided. The process comprises treating the metal substrate with an aqueous solution comprising a metallate compound. The process may further comprise one or more pre-treating the substrate, coating the metal substrate with an oxidizing agent and/or coating the metal substrate with one or more rare earth element salts. A process for preparing the metallate coatings of the invention is also provided.

Corrosion resistant metallate compositions

A coating composition comprising an effective corrosion-inhibiting amount of a rare earth compound, a neutral to slightly acidic generating extender or an acidic generating extender, or combinations thereof is provided. In one embodiment, the corrosion-inhibiting components are combined with other components such as extenders, amino acids and amino acid derivatives, gelatin and gelatin derivatives, organic-based exchange resins, and combinations thereof, to enhance the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating film. The coating compositions have good adhesion to substrates such as metals, including aluminum and aluminum alloys.

Corrosion resistant coatings

A coating composition comprising an effective corrosion-inhibiting amount of a carbon pigment is provided. In one embodiment, the corrosion-inhibiting carbon pigment is further comprising other components such as extenders, including neutral to slightly acidic generating extenders and acidic generating extenders, are earth compounds, amino acids and amino acid derivatives, gelatin and gelatin derivatives, organic-based exchange resins, and combinations thereof, to enhance the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating film. In one embodiment, the carbon pigment is a surface-modified carbon pigment. The coating compositions have good adhesion to substrates such as metals, including aluminum and aluminum alloys.

Corrosion resistant coatings containing carbon

A conversion coating composition for coating a metal substrate is provided which imparts corrosion resistance to the underlying metal substrate. The conversion coating composition comprises an aqueous carrier and first and second rare earth element salts. A complete coating system employing the conversion coating composition is also provided as well as methods for conversion coating a metal substrate with the rare earth element conversion coating compositions of the present invention.

Corrosion resistant conversion coatings

Corrosion resistance of metallic components such as stainless steel components of vehicles, and especially aluminum-based components of aircraft, is enhanced by application of an e-coat paint or primer which is enhanced by incorporation of cerium ions into the e-coat electrolytic bath. The resulting overall coating includes a cerium-based layer under a cerium-enhanced e-coat paint or primer layer.

Additive-assisted, cerium-based, corrosion-resistant e-coating

A cerium-based coating for corrosion resistance is applied by exposing a cleaned aluminum-based component to a corrosion-inhibiting cerium solution containing cerium ions in the presence of an oxidizing agent. The coating deposits spontaneously without an external source of electrons.

Cerium-based spontaneous coating process for corrosion protection of aluminum alloys

The corrosion resistance of an aluminum or aluminum alloy component is enhanced by immersing an aluminum alloy to act as a cathode and an oxygen-evolving anode in an electrolyte comprising water, cerium ions, and an additive selected from among animal gelatin, derivatives of animal gelatin, and amino acids, then passing an electrical current through the electrolyte to deposit a cerium-based coating onto the aluminum-based component.

Additive-assisted cerium-based electrolytic coating process for corrosion protection of aluminum alloys

A process for enhancing the corrosion resistance of an aluminum-containing component with a cerium based coating. An aluminum-containing cathode and an oxygen-evolving anode are immersed in an electrolyte comprising water, solvent, oxidizing agent and cerium ions. An electrical current is passed through the electrolyte by applying electrical current to deposit a cerium based coating onto the cathode. An electrolyte for use in depositing a cerium based coating. An electrodeposited cerium-based coating. An aluminum aircraft structural component having a cerium-based coating thereon.
