A core assembly for a turbine engine blade includes a generally radially extending trunk interconnected to multiple generally axially extending tabs. The tabs are interconnected by a generally radially extending ligament. Multiple generally axially extending protrusions are interconnected to the ligament opposite the trunk. A mold is configured to define an exterior surface of an airfoil. The core is arranged within the mold and is configured such that the tabs and the ligament break through at the exterior surface.

Cast features for a turbine engine airfoil

An airfoil for a turbine engine includes a structure having a cooling passage that has a generally radially extending cooling passageway arranged interiorly relative to an exterior surface of the structure. The cooling passageway includes multiple cooling slots extending there from toward the exterior surface and interconnected by a radially extending trench. The trench breaks the exterior surface, and the exterior surface provides the lateral walls of the trench. The airfoil is manufactured by providing a core having multiple generally axially extending tabs and a generally radially extending ligament interconnecting the tabs. The structure is formed about the core to provide the airfoil with its exterior surface. The ligament breaks the exterior surface to form the radially extending trench in the exterior surface of the structure.

An airfoil assembly includes an airfoil with at least one cavity that is in communication with a source of cooling air. A baffle is disposed within that cavity and includes a plurality of openings for directing cooling air against the hot wall. A plurality of dividers extends between the baffle walls and the internal cavity to direct cooling air toward one of a leading edge chamber and a trailing edge chamber.

Chambered airfoil cooling

A method involves forming a core assembly. The forming includes molding a first ceramic core over a first refractory metal core to form a core subassembly. The subassembly is assembled to a second ceramic core.

Investment casting cores and methods

Gas turbine engine components having an airfoil extending outwardly of a platform are mounted in adjacent relationship, and such that cooling air flows outwardly of a gap between mating faces of the platforms. The location of localized hot spots is identified on the platform, and the mating faces are designed to provide cooling air through the gap to address these hot spots. A suction side edge of the platform has a curved portion extending inwardly into the platform, and the pressure side has a curved portion bulging outwardly away from the airfoil. When these two portions on adjacent components mate, a gap is provided between two platforms that provides leakage cooling air to the hot spot.

Platform mate face contours for turbine airfoils

A cooled cast part has an exterior surface. A cooling passageway system extends from at least one inlet port to a plurality of outlet ports. The passageway system includes a first passageway to at least a first of the outlets and surrounding at least one post. The system includes a second passageway to at least a second of the outlets passing through the at least one post.

Firm cooling method and hole manufacture

An airfoil assembly includes an airfoil extending away from a platform. One or more cooling circuits are formed through the platform in order to provide cooling of the platform. The cooling circuit may include a downwardly directed inlet receiving cooling air from below the platform. The cooling air is then directed in a direction generally parallel to the outer surface of the platform and through exits formed through the outer surface of the platform. The cooling circuit may optionally include a plurality of pedestals extending from an outer wall to an inner wall of the cooling circuit to increase the rigidity and the cooling function of the cooling circuit.

Turbine airfoil platform cooling circuit

A turbine airfoil includes a plurality of cooling circuits embedded within the pressure and suction sidewalls and a first and a second flow passage. The first flow passage feeds the coolant fluid to the cooling circuits that are embedded only within the pressure sidewall and the second flow passage feeds the coolant fluid to the cooling circuits that are embedded only within the suction sidewall. A method embodiment of the present comprises placing the inlets of the cooling circuits embedded within the first sidewall in flow communication with only one of the flow passages and placing the inlets of the cooling circuits embedded within the second sidewall in flow communication with at least one of the other flow passages to minimize the difference in sink pressures of the suction and pressure sidewalls to ensure ingestion of the coolant fluid into the inlets of the respective cooling circuits.
