A network element includes a processor that is configured to receive a request for performing an administratively-requested reroute (ARR) on a network. The ARR includes at least a first data plane operation on the network element and a second data plane operation on another network element. The network element is also configured to determine whether it is capable of performing the first data plane operation without interrupting network traffic on that network element. The network element is further configured to determine whether the other network element is capable of performing the second data plane operation without interrupting network traffic on that network element.

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for rerouting network traffic

A procedure for transferring wavelengths, and a system that operates in accordance with the procedure. The system comprises at least one network terminal, each including a switch and a controller. A plurality of wavelength sets are applied to the switch. The controller is arranged to operate the switch such that the switch (a) selects at least one wavelength from at least one of the plurality of wavelength sets, based on electrical monitoring at a port module external to the network terminal, and (b) outputs the at least one wavelength to an output of the at least one network terminal.

Multiple physical NEs may be presented to a network carrier as a single logical NE comprising multiple physical NEs. Alarms between the multiple physical NEs may be treated as internal connection alarms of the single logical NE instead of endpoint alarms of the multiple physical NEs. A number of alarms in the network may be reduced as well as alarm processing of the alarms at an Operational Support System (OSS), effectuating scaling of alarms as well as relaxing resource requirements (e.g., compute power, memory, etc.) of the OSS.

Method and apparatus for providing alarms in networks

A network element includes first and second multiplexers, first and second interfaces, and first and second selecting units. The multiplexers are communicatively coupled. The first interface is communicatively coupled to the first multiplexer and configured to receive multiplexed signals. The second interface is communicatively coupled to the second multiplexer and configured to receive multiplexed signals. The first selecting unit is communicatively coupled to the first and second multiplexers and configured to select between a signal received from the first multiplexer and a signal received from the second multiplexer. A procedure, apparatus, system, and medium for transferring traffic across a packet network. In the procedure, a network element bundles a plurality of common (Synchronous Transport Signal) STS-Nc services included in a virtual concatenation group. The network element then transfers the traffic in accordance with the bundled plurality of STS-Nc services. In one example embodiment herein, the plurality of STS-Nc services are STS-services, and each bundle of STS-services is aligned to a timeslot boundary of an STS-c service.

Procedure, apparatus, and computer program for reducing a probability of fragmentation when supporting virtual concatenation (VCAT) services

An optical ring network has one or more working wavelengths and multiple protection wavelengths adapted to support the working wavelength(s). Routing tables may be used in network nodes to assign traffic of a failed working wavelength to a protection wavelength. The protection technique may be applied to networks employing, for example, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM).

Optical channel intelligently shared protection ring

An optical transponder, system, method, and program wherein the transponder monitors for at least one of a failure or an alarm signal. In response to detecting a failure or alarm signal (communication), the transponder performs at least one of a predetermined action and propagating an alarm communication to a network, based on a configuration property. The transponder can have a configuration property specifying a predetermined action for shutting off a laser if an alarm signal indicating a network failure is detected. As an example, some transponders can be configured to either provide an alarm communication, and/or shut off a laser, depending upon which communication interface detects a network failure or receives an alarm signal. Also, other transponders can be configured to propagate existing alarm communications, without generating new alarm communications or shutting off lasers. In this manner, the number of alarm signals and laser shut offs can be reduced when a network failure is propagated through the network.

A method and apparatus for the robust implementation and protection of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) traffic over a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) Unidirectional Path Switched Ring (UPSR). The traditional SONET bridging function is eliminated for the ATM traffic in favor of a selector function. The selector function occurs at the ingress of the ATM traffic to the UPSR and directs the ATM traffic to its destination via a virtual path over the UPSR. The ATM traffic is protected from both SONET failures and ATM failures by means of an Intra-Ring Communication (IRC) protocol. The IRC protocol governs failure detection and the notification of the SONET nodes on the UPSR of the failure and any protection switch that may be necessary.
