A fiber optic probe is disclosed for use as a signal collector and illuminator in Near Field Scanning Microscopy (NSOM) and Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (PSTM) and the like. The tip of the probe is designed to reduce local mode coupling in favor of optical scattering as the primary signal transduction mechanism in order to maximize resolution. The optical fiber used is of sufficient numerical aperture to allow efficient capture and transfer to a detector of photons scattered at the probe tip. Further, the rate of taper between the probe tip and the transmission fiber is controlled to minimize signal loss in the transition as well as to minimize signal loss when the probe is used as an illumination source.

Fiber optic probe and method of making same

A steam resistant optical fiber cable for use adjacent underground steam ducts in metropolitan locations. The optical fiber cable comprises polyethersulfone loose tubes for enhanced hydrolytic stability and a welded aluminum tube swaged over the fiber core to provide moisture imperviousness. The welded aluminum tube is bonded to the fiber core with an intermediate resin barrier layer to provide resistance to repeated cyclic flexing of the cable.

A method for making an improved all-dielectric, self-supporting (ADSS) fiber optic aerial cable with improved mechanical coupling between the primary and secondary strength elements. The method includes calculating the required degree of mechanical coupling (Kc) between the primary and secondary strength elements in order to avoid relative slippage therebetween and then selecting suitable cable elements so as to make the fiber optic cable with a degree of mechanical coupling at least equal to the calculated Kc value.

Method for making high strain aerial fiber optic cable

A simultaneous bi-directional OTDR optical fiber measurement method wherein a test fiber is spliced between a launch fiber and a termination fiber which is provided with a reflective coating at its terminal end. A laser light pulse is introduced into the launch fiber and the forward trace signal and reverse trace signal from the light pulse are detected. A correction is applied to the reverse trace signal to account for reflectivity originating at the fiber input end so that an accurate measurement can be made of certain fiber characteristics of a single-mode optical fiber.

Simultaneous bi-directional optical time domain reflectometry method

A method is disclosed for determining the refractive index profile of an optical fiber wherein light from an intense optical source is focused at the bare fiber end portion of the test fiber. A small amount of light will be coupled into the optical fiber where for the short length of uncoated fiber only cladding modes are excited. The index of refraction is determined directly by analyzing the intensity distribution emitted from the optical fiber with a lens system having a limited numerical aperture.
