Various embodiments provide novel tools and techniques for position and/or motion tracking, including without limitation solutions that can be used for excavation and similar applications. In a particular aspect of some embodiments, a communication device with a camera may be provided to track the position and motion of a stick of an excavator or reference features located on a stick of an excavator. A location of a bucket of an excavator may then be calculated relative to the stick or reference features on the stick of the excavator. Thus, an operator of the excavator can use the communication device to effectively and efficiently track the location of the excavator bucket without the need for a second person to provide instructions about the location of the bucket.

A method of implementing convergence of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver is disclosed. A GNSS receiver which is coupled with a mobile machine is shut down. The GNSS receiver is in a converged state at shut down. The GNSS receiver is automatically powered up at a preset time. A convergence algorithm is automatically initiated prior to start of work that utilizes the GNSS receiver.

A method of implementing fast GNSS convergence by relative positioning is disclosed. A GNSS receiver which is coupled with a mobile machine is shut down. The GNSS receiver is in a converged state at shut down. A movement sensor is monitored to determine if net movement of a GNSS antenna coupled with the mobile machine exceeds a threshold net movement parameter while the GNSS receiver is shut down. Upon power up of the GNSS receiver, a shorter convergence algorithm is initiated in response to determining that the threshold net movement parameter has not been exceeded. The shorter convergence algorithm is also initiated upon power up of the GNSS receiver in response to determining that the threshold net movement parameter has been exceeded but information from the movement sensor has been used to update the location of the GNSS receiver since said shut down.

In accordance with one embodiment, a GNSS receiver which is coupled with a mobile machine is shut down. The GNSS receiver is in a converged state at shut down. A method for distributing the QOS processing in a broadband access system to the system modems and the head-end equipment. Requests for a change in the operating parameters are transmitted on an exception basis, thereby greatly reducing the amount of system over-head required. In the upstream, the Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) or Wireless Modem Termination System (WMTS or Wireless Hub) determines a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or Bit Error Rate (BER) (or similar measurable parameter) quality data for each received packet. If a measured parameter is outside of the predetermined limits, then the WMTS reports to the NMS (Network Management Operating System) the modem ID and the measured data of the particular packet. The NMS may then modify the operating parameters. In the downstream, each modem determines an SNR or BER (or some other measurable parameter) measurement for the incoming packets. These values may be compared to some boundary conditions. If the system is performing outside the boundary conditions, the modem sends an exception message to the NMS which reassigns the modem to a different downstream channel or modifies the channel parameters.

Distributed processing for optimal QOS in a broadband access system

A method for correcting for the offset carrier frequency in a wireless modem is provided. The method further allows for the periodic correction of the offset of the carrier frequency. A Fine tuning method is implemented that uses fine tuning frequency increments to determine minimum and maximum edges of a received frequency from which to calculate an offset used to adjust the transmitted frequency or the receiver of the wireless modem. Power correction is performed for variances in received signal power by adjusting an output power relative to differences in received power compared to an expected received power value.

A system and method for controlling a transverter from a wireless modem unit (WMU). A WMU delivers a control signal to a transceiver. This signal is outside the IF signal data range (preferably below 11 MHz). The signal is carried on the cable between the transceiver and the WMU. This signal is detected by the transceiver, and determines the timing and the control information. The signal is ASK modulated to enable low data rate transfer of messages between the WMU and the transceiver. The control signal is detected at the transverter using a detector circuit. Additionally, specific transverter detection circuits are disclosed to detect the control signal.

A wireless modem contains a power inserter circuit along with the traditional modem components. The power inserter circuit isolates the modem components from DC power that is inserted on the coaxial cable to a transverter. One embodiment of the present invention provides for a wireless modem that contains separate power connections for the modem components and the transverter. Another embodiment of the present invention provides for one power connection for the wireless modem and a DC-to-DC converter for the modem component power. The power source is selected based on the power requirements of the transverter and the DC-to DC-converter converts the input voltage into the voltage level required by the modem components. By incorporating the power inserter within the modem enclosure, power cannot be accidentally inserted into the modem.
