Compounds useful as reactive coalescents and methods of improving the stability of reactive coalescents are disclosed. A process for the preparation of low molecular weight polymers which are also useful as reactive coalescents is also disclosed.

Aqueous laminating construction adhesive compositions incorporating a one-part adhesive copolymer, the copolymer being a vinyl ester/acrylic copolymer containing from about 0.1% to about 20%, by weight based on copolymer weight, of a copolymerized polar monomer, the copolymer having a Tg from about 10&deg; C. to about &minus;35 C. are provided which exhibit a good balance of high temperature and ambient temperature adhesion performance in a one-part adhesive composition.

A method for making a laminated article includes applying a wet layer of the aqueous laminating adhesive composition of the to a first substrate layer; covering the wet layer of adhesive composition with a second substrate layer; and drying the layer of adhesive composition to form the laminated article. A laminated article includes two substrate layers bonded together by an interposed layer of the dried adhesive composition.

A method for making a polymer, includes the step of polymerizing a mixture of a vinyl ester monomer, a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.12)alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer and a mono ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer by free radical initiated polymerization in an aqueous medium and in free presence of a colloidal stabilizer, a first poly(alkoxylated) alkyl phenol having less than or equal to 12 alkoxyl units per molecule and a second poly(alkoxylated) alkyl phenol having greater than 12 alkoxyl units per molecule, to form an emulsion of the polymer in the aqueous medium.

A method for making a polymer includes adding a first portion of a colloidal stabilizer to an aqueous medium, adding a monomer mixture, said monomer mixture including a monomer charge and a second portion of colloidal stabilizer and said monomer charge including from about 40 parts by weight to about 70 parts by weight of a vinyl ester monomer per 100 parts by weight monomer charge and from about 30 parts by weight to about 60 parts by weight of a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.12)alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer per 100 parts by weight monomer charge, to the aqueous medium and polymerizing the monomers to form an emulsion of the polymer in the aqueous medium.

A method for making a laminate includes applying a layer of the aqueous adhesive composition to a first substrate layer and covering the layer of adhesive composition with a second substrate layer to form the laminated article. A laminate includes two substrate layers bonded together by an interposed layer of the solids of the adhesive composition.

This invention is directed to a polyurethane mixture. More particularly, there is provided a mixture polyurethanes comprising a first polyurethane with at least two end groups, where each end group comprises a terminal isocyanate and a polyether; a second polyurethane with at least two end groups, where each end group comprises a terminal isocyanate group and a non-functional group; and a third polyurethane with at least two end groups, where one end group comprises a terminal isocyanate and a polyether and one other end group comprises a terminal isocyanate and a non-functional group. A method for improving the sag resistance of an aqueous composition is also provided. This method permits the formulation of aqueous compositions which resist the tendency to sag. The polyurethane mixture of this invention is useful for thickening aqueous compositions such as paints, coatings, cosmetics, personal care items, hair shampoos and conditioners, cleaners, and the like.

Polyurethane mixture

A method is provided for improving thickeners used in aqueous system. The improvement is directed to the elimination of organic cosolvents which are conventionally added to aqueous solutions of certain hydrophobic thickeners. This method involves the reversible complexation of cyclodextrin compounds with hydrophobic moieties on the thickener molecule to suppress the viscosity of the aqueous solution containing the thickener so that such the solution can be easily handled. This is followed by decomplexing the cyclodextrin from the thickener to permit the thickener to perform its intended function.
