As part of a localized positioning solution, a mobile device may transmit a request message to a server to obtain information about location contexts near the mobile device. In response, the server may, in some implementations, transmit a response message back to the mobile device that identifies a list of nearby LCIs and an area that encompasses these LCIs. The mobile device may store the returned LCI information and the returned area information in corresponding databases for later use. In some implementations, time limits may be placed on the returned area information after which the information is deemed stale.

Disclosed are systems, apparatus, devices, methods, computer program products, and other implementations, including a method that includes determining at a mobile device whether verbal input from a user is required to determine position of location of the user. The method also includes, in response to a determination that the verbal input from the user is required to determine the position of the location of the user, obtaining at the mobile device verbal description data representative of one or more geographic features viewable by the user from the location of the user, identifying at the mobile device the one or more of the geographic features from the obtained verbal description data, and determining, at the mobile device, positioning information for the location of the user based, at least in part, on the one or more geographic features identified from the verbal description data.

Landmark based positioning with verbal input

Systems, apparatus and methods disclosed herein facilitate mobile station (MS) location determination using MS captured images of known points of interest (POIs). In some embodiments, each POI is associated with a corresponding visibility map comprising a set of grid points, and a subset of the POIs may be identified from the MS captured images by matching the MS captured images of each POI in the subset with corresponding stored images. A cumulative grid point weight for a plurality of grid points in the visibility maps associated with the POIs in the subset may be computed. The cumulative grid point weight for each grid point represents the probability that the MS is located at that grid point. The location of the MS may be estimated based on the cumulative grid point weights of the plurality of grid points.

Methods and apparatus for position estimation

A method for processing assistance data associated with positioning of a mobile device as described herein includes estimating an initial location of the mobile device within an area; designating the initial location of the mobile device as a focal point; retrieving a subset of hierarchical assistance data as a function of the focal point; and generating a multi-level assistance data structure for the area centered at the focal point.
