A method of operating a rotating detonation combustor includes providing a flow of air through an air inlet to flow into a detonation chamber, providing a flow of fuel from at least one fuel injector into the detonation chamber, mixing the flow of the fuel and the flow of the air in the detonation chamber to generate a fuel-air mixture, detonating the fuel-air mixture in the detonation chamber to generate rotating detonation waves within the detonation chamber, and controlling, during operation of the rotating detonation combustor from a first power operating state to a second power operating state, different from the first power operating state, the air inlet wall to control the flow of the air through the air inlet into the detonation chamber to control a discharge coefficient and an operating mode within the detonation chamber.

An apparatus, system, and method of reducing film cooling scrubbing in a combustor are provided. The apparatus includes a combustor liner that includes a field of a plurality of sparsely-spaced film holes that extend through the combustor liner wherein the field includes a boundary. The combustor liner also includes a patch of relatively more densely-spaced shield holes that extend through the combustor liner at specific predetermined locations within the boundary of the field.

Systems and methods are provided herein useful to thrust augmentation in a gas turbine engine. In some embodiments, the systems include augmentors that incorporate a rotating detonation architecture. An exhaust system of a gas turbine engine includes an augmentor and a peripheral wall surrounding an exhaust system core. The augmentor comprises a detonation chamber disposed within the exhaust system core. The detonation chamber includes a channel formed in the peripheral wall. A core inlet path delivers a core air-fuel mixture and a pilot inlet path delivers a pilot air-fuel mixture to the detonation chamber. The core air-fuel mixture combusts in the detonation chamber along the midline the detonation chamber. The pilot air-fuel mixture detonates in the detonation chamber adjacent the peripheral wall to create a rotating detonation wave that supports the combustion reaction occurring along the midline of the detonation chamber.

System and method for optimizing a manufacturing process based on an inspection of a component

An optical monitoring system includes a controller configured to determine a predicted status of a component based on an operational time of a rotary machine and an individual model. The controller is also configured to receive a first signal indicative of an infrared spectrum image of the component from one or more cameras. Further, the controller is configured to determine a current status of the component based on the first signal and compare the current status to the predicted status of the component. Additionally, the controller is configured to update the predicted status of the component such that the predicted status matches the current status of the component and update at least one parameter of the individual model of the component based on the comparison.

The method includes executing, by a system configured to drive the manufacturing process, a set of manufacturing functions. Executing these functions include receiving data associated with one or more field parts similar to the new part, and generating, based on the data, a forecast representative of a longevity of the one or more parts. The method further includes generating a digital thread forming a surrogate model for the new part, based on the forecast. Further, the method includes creating the set of manufacturing functions based on the surrogate model and manufacturing the new part according to the set of manufacturing functions.

The turbine shroud segment also includes cooling channels disposed in a thickness of the turbine shroud segment between the backside and the flow path surface, where each cooling channel includes an outlet at one of the side walls of the turbine shroud segment.

A sealing system for a rotatable element defining an axis of rotation includes a rotor blade including a shank and an angel wing extending axially from the shank. The sealing system also includes a stator vane positioned axially adjacent the rotor blade. The stator vane includes a platform extending in an axial direction over the angel wing such that a clearance gap is defined therebetween. The sealing system also includes a sealing mechanism including a portion of the platform and a portion of the angel wing. The sealing mechanism includes at least one obliquely oriented surface such that the clearance gap defines a converging nozzle.

A seal assembly for a rotary machine is provided. The seal assembly includes multiple sealing device segments disposed circumferentially intermediate to a stationary housing and a rotor. Each of the segments includes a shoe plate with a forward-shoe section and an aft-shoe section having one or more labyrinth teeth therebetween facing the rotor. The sealing device includes a stator interface element having a groove or slot for allowing disposal of a spline seal for preventing segment leakages. The sealing device segment also includes multiple bellow springs or flexures connected to the shoe plate and to the stator interface element. Further, the sealing device segments include a secondary seal integrated with the stator interface element at one end and positioned about the multiple bellow springs or flexures and the shoe plate at the other end.
