A method may receive, at a first node, a first message with a first message data structure from a second node. The first message data structure may include a counter for each resource of a plurality of resources that is indicative of a most current age of a master copy of the resource known by the second node. The first node may include a current data structure with a counter for each resource that is indicative of a most current age of the master copy of the resource known by the first node. The method may determine whether at least one counter in the current data structure is older than the corresponding counter in the message data structure. The method may update the counter that is older, e.g., to learn the most current age of the master copy of the resource known by the second node, based on the determination.

A method of managing a database may include, at a node, assigning a pre-assimilation value to a hardware instance identifier of a hardware component before the node is assimilated into a multi-node computing system. The method may also include receiving a post-assimilation value after the node has been assimilated into the multi-node computing system. The method may also include updating the pre-assimilation value with the post-assimilation value.

A satellite radio receiver includes a display that displays information regarding one or more channels that are not currently being listened to. For a music channel, this information may include the name of the artist, the song title, time left in the song, etc. For a news channel, this information may include the news currently being discussed, the name of the news program, the time remaining, etc. For a sports channel, this information may include the name of the channel, a description of the sporting event, the time remaining, etc. The preferred embodiments include different ways to select which channels are 'favorites' and therefore displayed on the display. One way is to select one or more channels that are assigned to preset buttons on the radio receiver. Another way is to keep track of which channels are most frequently listened to, and to display information regarding those channels. The preferred embodiments extend to any and all mechanisms for displaying information regarding one or more channels that are not currently being listened to.

An apparatus, program product and method track the location of a vehicle during at least a portion of a period of the time associated with an economic transaction so that risks associated with the actual usage of the vehicle can be accommodated in the costs for the transaction. In particular, a determination is made during a time period associated with an economic transaction as to whether the vehicle is located at a location having an increased level of risk. Costs for the economic transaction are then adjusted based at least in part on the presence of the vehicle in a location with an increased level of risk. In one exemplary environment, car rental rates are adjusted based upon the actual usage of a rented vehicle. In another exemplary environment, insurance premiums are adjusted based upon the actual usage of an insured vehicle. In either event, usage that results in a vehicle being located in areas of comparatively higher risk can be accounted for in additional transactional costs, resulting in improved allocation of risk and minimization of economic inefficiencies.

Location-based vehicle risk assessment system

An apparatus, program product, and method selectively display or render display information from display information packets provided in a digital radio broadcast or via another form of packet-based communication medium based upon local information associated with the display, and typically irrespective of whether any of such packets are specifically addressed to any local receiver associated with a display. The local information used in the selective display of display information may be a physical location of a user, whereby a location sensor is utilized to determine a current location that is compared to a location criterion provided in a data packet to determine whether the current location matches the location criterion. In addition to, or in lieu of location information, the local information may include local configuration data that identifies certain information types (e.g., categories of display information such as advertisements, traffic information, weather information, news information, sports information, etc.) that are enabled for display on a particular display.

Applications/functions within an electronic processing device having a GPS card and antenna, such as a laptop or personal digital assistant, can be enabled only when in a specified geographic location. For each critical application/function, its accessibility is programmed to be enabled/disabled only in specified geographic regions. No additional passwords are required: access or abortion of an running program are automatic. The geographic regions can be input into the electronic processing device using GPS processing or using a graphical user interface on a map. Other methods of determining the boundaries of the appropriate geographic regions for each applications/functions are disclosed. An application/function will not be opened if the electronic device is not within the geographic region associated with the application/function. When an existing application/function is running and the user changes geographic regions, an abort message is automatically generated for those applications/functions that should not be active in the new geographic regions. A GPS card and antenna within the electronic processing device receive and process the device's current location.

The present invention relates to a method and program product for facilitating the maintenance of current bookmarks and preventing the loss of information associated with a bookmark. In one aspect, the invention bookmarks a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) associated with one or more HTML documents at a user's request and creates a database table containing each bookmarked URL. The source code of the bookmarked URL is scanned for embedded links which are stored in the table according to the related bookmarked URL. To ensure that the bookmarks are current, a periodic verification of the status of a bookmarked URL is performed. A change in the location or/and contents of the one or more bookmarked HTML documents results in one or more actions to prevent the loss of data to the user. In one embodiment, the database table is refreshed to reflect any changes to the content of the HTML documents. In another embodiment, where a bookmarked HTML document has been moved to a new URL, the table is updated with a forwarding URL, i.e., the original URL is replaced with the new URL. Where a forwarding URL is not available, a backup document containing the stored embedded links related to the original URL is created.

An electronic processing device having GPS card and antenna, such as a laptop or personal digital assistant, can be enable only when a geographic-specific password is entered. Geographic regions are established in the electronic processing device with a user interface and priorities can be granted to the regions. The user further stores a geographic-specific password for each of the geographic regions. When the user travels and wishes to enable the electronic processing device, the GPS card and antenna receive and process the device's current location. When the user inputs a password, the electronic device determines if the password is appropriate for the current location. If not, access is denied.

An apparatus and method allow a user to input alphanumeric information into a video game console by providing a keyboard that may be connected to the video game console. In a first embodiment, the keyboard plugs directly into a video game controller input on the video game console, and generates from the keystrokes on the keyboard video control codes that are compatible with the video game controller input. The video game controller recognizes the video control codes from the keyboard, and interprets the video control codes on the video game controller input as corresponding to keys on the keyboard according to a predefined map. In a second embodiment, an adapter is provided with an output that plugs into the video game controller input on the video game console, and with an input that receives a standard plug from a standard keyboard (such as a PC-compatible keyboard). The adapter receives the scan codes from the keyboard, and translates those scan codes into corresponding video control codes on the video game controller input. Using the present invention, a user may provide keyboard input to a video game console, which is especially useful in browsing information via the Internet.

A sensor detects a possible attempt to open a vehicle door latch by mechanical means, and temporarily disables an electronic unlocking signal until the mechanical activation means are absent. Preferably, all functions are performed by an on-board microprocessor controller, which checks the state of the door sensor(s) upon occurrence of an unlock event. If the sensor(s) indicate that a person is or may be attempting to open the door mechanically, no unlock signal is transmitted immediately to the door latch. Preferably, the controller continues to check the state of the door sensor(s), and activates the unlock mechanism after the sensor is clear. However, if the sensor is not clear within some timeout period, the controller may simply abort the unlock operation. This is done to avoid confusing the user with an unlocking action some time after pressing the unlock switch.

A firearm, program product and method collectively utilize an on-board location sensor (e.g., a GPS receiver) and stored location information to selectively inhibit discharge of a firearm based on the current location of the firearm. Location information identifying one or more prohibited locations is stored in the firearm (typically in an on-board memory). A controller on-board the firearm then accesses the location sensor to determine a current location for the firearm, and selectively inhibits the discharge of the firearm if the current location is proximate any prohibited location.

The image and facsimile data is processed by a non-programmable-terminal (NPT) or a programmable work station (PWS) for presentation of a display screen. The save image information includes cache image counter data, scaling and viewed image screen location data that is used to restore the displayed image and facsimile data when the user returns to the previous function. A method and apparatus are provided for displaying image and facsimile data on a host-based application display.
