A composition that includes (a) a prepolymer having at least one free isocyanate group that is capable of bonding to tissue and that cures in vivo upon exposure to water to form a polymer having a compressive modulus between 1.9 and 14.4 MPa and a tensile modulus between 5.0 and 30, and (b) an oil that is miscible in the prepolymer, the oil being selected from the group consisting of silicone oils, mineral oil, vegetable oils, and combinations thereof. The composition retains its integrity when delivered in an aqueous medium.

Meniscal repair adhesive

Described herein are methods and compounds for extracting water from an aqueous solution. For example, some embodiments include method for extracting water from an aqueous solution, comprising contacting the aqueous solution with a compound comprising one or more carbonyl moieties having an equilibrium constant for a hydration of the carbonyl moiety of at least about 0.5; separating a composition comprising the hydrated compound from the aqueous solution; and reacting the hydrated compound to obtain water.

Reactive extraction of water

Methods for fracking, particularly dry fracking, comprising the use of surfactants for preparation of substantially water-free carbon dioxide in oil foams are presented.

Method of fracking using silicone surfactants

A method of making a composition comprising reacting (a) an isocyanate group-containing component having an average functionality of at least 2; and (b) an active hydrogen group-containing component having an average functionality of at least 2 to form a composition that is biodegradable, a solid at 22&#xb0; C. and below, and has pressure sensitive adhesive properties at a temperature of 37&#xb0; C. and relative humidity of 100%. A method of using the composition therefore to adhere polymer meshes or films to biological tissue is also disclosed.

Biodegradable compositions having pressure sensitive adhesive properties

A composition comprising the reaction product of (a) an isocyanate group-containing component having an average functionality of at least 2; and (b) an active hydrogen group-containing component having an average functionality of at least 2. The composition is biodegradable, a solid at 22&#xb0; C. and below, and has pressure sensitive adhesive properties at a temperature of 37&#xb0; C. and relative humidity of 100%. The composition may be used to adhere polymer meshes or films to biological tissue.

A moisture-curable and biodegradable adhesive that includes the reaction product of: (a) an isocyanate component having an average functionality of at least 2; (b) an active hydrogen component having an average functionality greater than 2.1; and (c) an ionic salt component having an average hydroxyl or amino functionality, or combination thereof, of at least 1.

Hydrophilic biodegradable adhesives

Two new classes of amine-based sorbents are disclosed. The first class comprises new polymer-immobilized tertiary amine sorbents; the second class new polymer-bound amine sorbents. Both classes are tailored to facilitate removal of acid anhydrides, especially carbon dioxide (CO), from effluent gases. The amines adsorb acid anhydrides in a 1:1 molar ratio. Both classes of amine sorbents adsorb in the temperature range from about 20&#xb0; C. upwards to 90&#xb0; C. and can be regenerated by heating upwards to 100&#xb0; C.

Regenerable solid imine sorbents

A composition includes at least one biologically active agent covalently attached to a first polymerizing molecule that is adapted to undergo a free radical polymerization. The first polymerizing molecule retains the ability to undergo free radical polymerization after attachment of the bioactive agent thereto. The first polymerizing molecule is preferably biocompatible. The polymerizing molecule can, for example. be dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (DOPA) or tyrosine. The composition can also include a second component synthesized by reacting at least one core molecule having a plurality of reactive hydrogen groups with at least one multi-isocyanate functional molecule to create a conjugate including terminal isocyanate groups. The conjugate molecule is reacted with a second polymerizing molecule that is adapted to undergo a free radical polymerization. The second polymerizing molecule includes a reactive hydrogen to react with the isocyanate groups of the conjugate. The second polymerizing molecule retains the ability to undergo the free radical polymerization after reaction with the conjugate. In several embodiments, the first polymerizing molecule and the second polymerizing molecule are the same and dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (DOPA) or tyrosine.

Wound healing polymeric networks

A composition includes at least one hydrophilic polymer containing primary (&#x2014;NH) and/or secondary (&#x2014;NHR) amine groups and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function. A method of increasing the strength of paper includes the step of contacting the paper with a composition comprising (i) at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function. A hydrogel composition is formed from a mixture of at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function.

Cellulosic composition

A composition includes water; at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function as described above. The hydrophilic polymer and the saccharide are mixed to form a reaction mixture and reacted to increase the viscosity of the reaction mixture. The reaction is then substantially terminated by reducing the pH of the composition. A method of increasing the strength of a cellulosic pulp product includes the steps of: contacting wet cellulosic pulp with a composition comprising (i) at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function, the hydrophilic polymer and the saccharide of the composition having been reacted in a crosslinking reaction prior to contacting the composition with the cellulosic pulp product to increase the viscosity the composition; and, after contacting the cellulosic pulp with the composition, causing the crosslinking reaction between the hydrophilic polymer and the saccharide of the composition to proceed further.

Composition for increasing cellulosic product strength and method of increasing cellulosic product strength

A composition includes water having a salinity of at least 1 ppt, at least one hydrophilic polymer containing primary (&#x2014;NH) and/or secondary (&#x2014;NHR) amine groups and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function. A method of changing the permeability of a subterranean formation includes the step of injecting into a subterranean formation a composition comprising water, at least one hydrophilic polymer containing at least two groups which are independently the same or different a primary amine group or a secondary amine group and at least one saccharide containing a reducible function.

Networked polymeric gels and use of such polymeric gels in hydrocarbon recovery

Aromatic carboxylic acids are produced by reacting a Lewis acid: COcomplex with aromatic hydrocarbons. The complex can be created by incubating a Strong Lewis acid and COand forming a composition consisting essentially of CO, strong Lewis acid, and Lewis acid: COcomplex. Carboxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons to produce aromatic carboxylic acids using the composition and method in accordance with this invention provides improved yields without the use of finely divided aluminum or zinc.

Carboxylation of aromatic hydrocarbons to produce aromatic carboxylic acids

An adhesive including a mixture of isocyanate capped molecules formed by reacting multi-isocyanate functional molecules with multi-functional precursor molecules including terminal functional groups selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, a primary amino group and a secondary amino group. Preferably, the functional groups are hydroxyl groups. The multi-functional precursor compounds are biocompatible. Multi-amine functional precursors of the multi-isocyanate functional molecules are also biocompatible. As discussed, above, the mixture of molecules preferably has an average isocyanate functionality of at least 2.1 and, more preferably, has an average isocyanate functionality of at least 2.5. As also described above, the mixture of molecules preferably has a viscosity in the range of approximately 1 to approximately 100 centipoise. The mixture of molecules forms a crosslinked polymer network upon contact with the organic tissue in the presence of water. The crosslinked polymer network is biocompatible and biodegradable. The crosslinked polymer network degrades into degradation products including the precursor molecules and the multi-amine functional precursors.
