A method and system may include commanding, by a processor, a lighting system to generate a desired melanopic effect in accordance with a spectral weighting mode. To determine, by the processor, the spectral weighting mode based on an algorithm that compares a part of a spectrum for an amount of melanopic lumen to a melanopic sensitivity curve to generate a result comprising a melanopic ratio. In response to the result comprising the melanopic ratio, to by determine by the processor a visual brightness by calculations using an algorithmic solution based on the melanopic ratio multiplied by an amount of color temperature generating the visual brightness in accordance with the spectral weighting mode of the desired melanopic effect.

By modulating the illumination peripherals and the shutters, different users may perceiver different sensory inputs in a shared environment. For instance, users may experience brighter or dimmer illumination, or may experience different types of illumination. One user may view a movie on an LCD screen while the LCD screen appears blank to another user. In this manner, a passenger cabin of an aircraft may provide individualized sensory experiences to different passengers sharing the aircraft cabin.

A sanitization system for an aircraft may comprise: a power source; and a plurality of sanitizers in electrical communication with the power source, each sanitizer in the plurality of sanitizers configured to emit ultraviolet radiation having an average wavelength between 200 and 230 nm, the power source configured to provide power to each sanitizer in the plurality of sanitizers in succession during an occupied flight of the aircraft.

The backlight may use pixels having emitters to generate different color backlighting. In various instances, the display or the backlight or both may include a deep blue emitter. The blue emitter may be used in combination with red and green pixels elements to generate different colors. By implementing deep blue emitters rather than conventional blue (e.g., cyan) emitters, the effects of cyan light on a viewer's circadian rhythm may be limited or eliminated. Moreover, by implementing deep blue emitters, the effects of cyan light on a viewer's circadian rhythm may be varied, while the colors and images are reproduced for viewing without introducing significant color distortion.

A lighting unit may include a first light-emitting diode ('LED'), a second LED, and a third LED. The first LED may be configured to emit first electromagnetic radiation having a first wavelength of between about 600 nanometers ('nm') and about 740 nm, the second LED may be configured to emit second electromagnetic radiation having a second wavelength of between about 500 nm and about 565 nm, and the third LED may be configured to emit third electromagnetic radiation having a third wavelength between about 315 nm and about 430 nm. Thus, the third electromagnetic radiation may be disinfecting UV-A radiation that is incorporated into a lighting unit that produces visible light.
