An electronic device detects ambient contextual data and positioning data such as orientation and motion to determine an activity state of the electronic device. A controller sets a polling interval of an open/closed position sensor that is connected to a movable portion connected to a base to detect an open/closed event. In response to determining a first activity state, controller sets a first polling interval that mitigates power consumption. In response to determining a second activity state, the controller sets the polling interval to a second polling interval that is shorter than the first polling interval to reduce latency in detecting the open/closed event.

In aspects of gesture detection based on device form factor, a device includes gesture detection algorithms from which gestures are detectable based on device configurations. The device implements a gesture module to determine a form factor of the device as one of the device configurations, and select a gesture detection algorithm that corresponds to the form factor. The gesture module then utilizes the selected gesture detection algorithm to detect a gesture performed by a user holding the device in the device form factor. Additionally, the gesture module can determine a change in the device form factor. The gesture module can then replace the gesture detection algorithm with a different gesture detection algorithm, or replace parameter values in the gesture detection algorithm with respective updated parameter values, which are then usable to detect another instance of the gesture performed by the user holding the device in the changed form factor.

An electronic device includes a first device housing and a second device housing, with a hinge coupling the first device housing to the second device housing such that the first device housing is pivotable about the hinge relative to the second device housing between a closed position and an axially displaced open position. At least one inertial motion unit is situated in the first device housing and determines an orientation of the first device housing in three-dimensional space, delivering the same in an orientation determination signal. An inertial motion unit adjustment engine, activated by at least one predefined condition of electronic device, can apply at least one correction factor to the orientation determination signal when activated to create a modified orientation determination signal.

A method, an electronic device, and a computer program product for measuring light sensor output in an electronic device. The method includes receiving periodic synchronization signals from a display and generating one or more timing signals based on the received periodic synchronization signals. The method further includes tracking a number of timing signals and in response to each timing signal, recording output signals from a light sensor. The output signals correspond to a light level detected by the light sensor. The method further includes accumulating the recorded output signals over a threshold number of timing signals, The method includes determining if a value of the counter is at least equal to or greater than the threshold number. In response to determining that the value of the counter is at least equal to or greater than the threshold number, generating a composite output signal based on the accumulated recorded output signals.

System and method for measuring light sensor output in an electronic device

A portable electronic device provides adaptive vibration noise reduction by generating a user alert vibration that is one of a first magnitude and a second magnitude, with the first magnitude being greater than the second magnitude. The portable device is configured to alert the user by providing a first magnitude alert vibration except when the device is lying flat and ambient noise at the device is low, and to provide a second magnitude alert vibration when the device is lying flat and ambient noise at the device is low.

A method, a mobile device, and a computer program product for determining orientation of a mobile device. The method includes detecting, via an accelerometer, movement of a mobile device and calculating, by a processor, an orientation of the mobile device based on accelerometer data received from the accelerometer as the mobile device is moving. The method further includes tracking the orientation of the mobile device as the mobile device moves over a period of time and maintaining an image capture device and a display in an off state, while the mobile device is moving. The method further includes determining if the mobile device is in a landing position, based, at least partially, on the calculated orientation of the mobile device and in response to determining that the mobile device is not in the landing position, continuing to maintain the image capturing device in the off state such that power consumption of the mobile device is reduced.

Disclosed are peer-to-peer group re-formation techniques. The techniques enable automatic reformation of a peer-to-peer group when the Group Owner ('GO') device is lost. To do so, the techniques enable selection of a one of the peer devices in the peer-to-peer group as a next GO device responsive to detecting the loss of the original GO device. Then, the peer device selected as the next GO device automatically activates as the GO device, while the other peer devices scan for and connect to the next GO device.

The present invention provides a system and method for managing secure communications in an ad-hoc network having three or more users including a first user, a second user and a third user. Each user is associated with at least one communication device, and has a set of keys associated with the user for managing secure communications between the at least one communication device of the user and the at least one communication device of another one of the three or more users. Each set of keys includes a private key and a public key, where the public key is shared with the communication device of the other ones of the three or more users with which the user has been authenticated, and the private key is used to decrypt communications encrypted using the corresponding public key from the same set of keys. When the second user of the three or more users has been authenticated by the first user, in addition to receiving the associated public key of the second user, the first user receives a value defining a share authority level, which defines the authority of the first user relative to the second user to provide peer key sharing with the third user.

System and method for managing secure communications in an Ad-Hoc network

A method, device, system, or article of manufacture is provided for low-power management of multiple sensor chip architecture. In one embodiment, a method comprises, at a computing device that includes a first processor, a second processor and a third processor, receiving, by the first processor operating at a first clock rate, first sensor data from a first sensor operating at a first data rate; determining, by the first processor, a movement of the computing device using the first sensor data; in response to determining the movement of the computing device, performing, by the first processor, a first motion state algorithm to determine whether a modality of the computing device is a first motion state; and, in response to determining that the modality of the computing device is not the first motion state, changing, by the first processor, at least one of the first processor to operate at a second clock rate sufficient to perform a second motion state algorithm and changing the first sensor to operate at a second data rate sufficient to perform the second motion state algorithm, wherein the second motion state algorithm is used to determine whether the modality of the computing device is a second motion state.

A method, device, system, or article of manufacture is provided for low-power management of multiple sensor chip architecture. In one embodiment, a method comprises, at a computing device that includes a first processor, a second processor and a third processor, receiving, by the first processor, sensor data from a first sensor; determining, by the first processor, a movement by the computing device using the sensor data; receiving, by the first processor, a modality of the computing device; in response to determining that the modality corresponds to a predetermined state, determining, by the first processor, a modality move distance associated with the predetermined state; determining, by the first processor, a move distance of the computing device using the modality move distance; determining, by the first processor, that the move distance of the computing device is at least a move distance threshold; and, in response to determining that the move distance of the computing device is at least a move distance threshold, reporting, by the first processor, to at least one of the second processor and the third processor, that the move distance of the computing device is at least the move distance threshold.

A method for requesting location information, for example, Enhanced Observed Time of Arrival timing information, from mobile wireless communications in wireless communications networks. The exemplary location request () includes multiple response interval field () specifying intervals at which multiple responses to the location request must be sent or maximum intervals between which multiple responses to the location request must be sent, a final response time field () specifying a maximum time interval during which a final response to the location request must be sent, and an initial response time field () specifying when an initial response to the location request must be sent.

A session control method includes establishing a locationing session between a mobile device and a remotely located server over a network, sending information related to the geographical location of the mobile device to the remotely located server after establishing the locationing session, and providing two or more notifications via the mobile device, at predetermined intervals or in response to an event, that the locationing session is active.
