A fuel pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to an internal combustion engine includes a pumping plunger mounted in a bore and movable inwardly by an engine driven cam to displace fuel through an outlet to an injection nozzle. The quantity of fuel supplied to the nozzle is controlled by a spill valve. The apparatus also includes a restricted flow path through which fuel can flow to reduce the initial rate of fuel delivery through the nozzle, the flow path including a valve formed by the plunger and the bore so that fuel can flow through the flow path only during the initial inward movement of the plunger.

Fuel pumping apparatus

A fuel pumping apparatus includes an injection pump to which fuel is supplied through an adjustable throttle and which includes a fluid pressure operable device for controlling the timing of delivery of fuel. In order to accurately control the timing in accordance with the speed and the amount of fuel supplied to the engine a transducer is provided to sense the throttle position and a further transducer to measure the pressure upstream of the throttle. The signals from these transducers together with an engine speed signal are supplied to a circuit which computes or on the basis of stored information, provides a fuel quantity signal. The fuel quantity signal is supplied to a further circuit together with a speed signal which produces a desired timing signal. This signal is utilized to control the pressure applied to the device.

A fuel pump injector includes a plunger movable within a bore at one end of which there is a valve controlled outlet. A return spring is provided for the plunger and an electromagnetic device which includes a push member is provided to move the plunger in the direction of the outlet. A fuel inlet port is provided in the bore and this is covered by the plunger during its movement towards the outlet whereafter the pressurized fuel within the bore opens the valve to permit flow of fuel to the engine.

Fuel pump injector

A fuel injection nozzle includes a valve member axially slidable within a bore and shaped at its end to define a substantially conical valve surface which co-operates with a seating surface to control the flow of fuel through outlet orifices. One of said surfaces defines two spaced hardened zones for co-operation with the other surface, the outlet orifice extending from intermediate said zones.
