A system including a polyphase regulator. In some embodiments, the system includes: a first magnetic element, n switching poles, n being an integer greater than 2, a first port having a first node and a second node, and a second port having a first node and a second node. The first magnetic element may include n phase ports and an averaging port, and each of the n switching poles may include a phase node.

Polyphase AC to DC converter

A fluid-cooled magnetic element. Coils are formed with small gaps between the turns of the coils. Coolant flow through the gaps cools the coils.

Fluid cooled magnetic element

A switching regulator is disclosed comprising a high-voltage port, a low-voltage port, n number of switching poles, a magnetic element, and a controller. In turn, each switching pole connects across the high-voltage port and may consist of either one switch and one diode or two switches and two diodes. In turn, the magnetic element comprises a ferro-core having n number of magnetic branches, each of which includes a winding. Each winding start connects to the phase node of a respective switching pole, while each winding finish connects, in common, to one side of the low-voltage port. An n+1magnetic branch establishes a defined common-mode inductance which, in combination with transformer action, limits current ripple. The transformer action serves to exchange ripple power between phases such that the need for inductance is greatly reduced.

Polyphase switching regulator

A magnetic element. In some embodiments, the magnetic element includes a first electrically conductive coil, having a first annular surface and a second annular surface; a second electrically conductive coil, having a first annular surface and a second annular surface; and a spacer between the first electrically conductive coil and the second electrically conductive coil; a fluid inlet; and a fluid outlet. The spacer may have a first face, the first face being separated from the first annular surface of the first electrically conductive coil by a first gap; and a fluid path may extend from the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet through the first gap.

Liquid cooled magnetic element

A fluid-cooled magnetic element. A plurality of coils is arranged in a non-toroidal configuration. Each coil may be a hollow cylinder, formed by winding a rectangular wire into a roll. The coils alternate with planer spacers. The coils may alternate in winding orientation, and the inner end of each coil may be connected, through a connection pin, to the inner end of an adjacent coil. Small gaps are formed between the coils and the spacers, e.g. as a result of each spacer having, on its two faces, a plurality of raised ribs, against which the coils abut. Cooling fluid flows through the gaps to cool the coils.

An electric machine. The electric machine includes one or more face wound strips including a first strip. The one or more strips have a plurality of openings. The first strip has a plurality of turns, and an opening of a turn of the first strip overlaps an opening of an adjacent turn, to form a portion of a fluid channel of a plurality of fluid channels. The turn and the adjacent turn abut against each other at the overlapping openings.

Wound strip machine

A system for cooling the teeth of an electric machine stator. The stator includes a stator core that may be formed of a plurality of laminations. Each lamination has a plurality of back iron apertures, a plurality of tooth tip apertures, and a plurality of elongated apertures. When the laminations are assembled to form the stator core, the back iron apertures align to form back iron inlet channels and back iron outlet channels, and the tooth tip apertures align to form tooth tip cooling channels. The elongated apertures are L-shaped and connect the back iron inlet channels and back iron outlet channels to the tooth tip channels. Cooling fluid may flow, for example, axially through a back iron inlet channel, azimuthally and radially inward through an elongated aperture to a tooth tip, axially along a tooth tip channel, and to a back iron outlet channel through another elongated aperture.

Electric machine stator with liquid cooled teeth

An electric machine. The electric machine includes one or more edge wound strips including a first strip. The one or more strips have a plurality of openings. The first strip has a plurality of turns, and an opening of a turn of the first strip overlaps an opening of an adjacent turn, to form a portion of a fluid channel of a plurality of fluid channels. The turn and the adjacent turn abut against each other at the overlapping openings.

A toroidal magnetic element. A plurality of coils is arranged in a toroidal configuration. Each coil may be a hollow cylinder, formed by winding a rectangular wire into a roll. The coils alternate with spacers, each of which may be a wedge. The coils may alternate in winding orientation, and the inner end of each coil may be connected, through a connection pin, to the inner end of an adjacent coil. Small gaps are formed between the coils and the wedges, e.g. as a result of each wedge having, on its two faces, a plurality of raised ribs, against which the coils abut. Cooling fluid flows through the gaps to cool the coils.

A low drag fluid seal. The fluid seal includes a lip separated from the rotor shaft, during operation, by a gap, the gap being sufficient narrow, radially, to prevent liquid from seeping through the gap at an unacceptable rate, but sufficiently wide, radially, to avoid unacceptably high viscous drag. Fluid that seeps through the gap accumulates in a recovery cavity and is recovered.

Dynamic fluid seal

A wound strip structure for efficient heat transfer. The structure includes one or more edge-wound or face-wound strips. At least one of the strips has a plurality of turns and a plurality of apertures, and an aperture of a turn of the strip overlapping an aperture of an adjacent turn, of the strip or of another strip, to form a portion of a fluid channel. The fluid channel may be used to conduct a cooling fluid to cool the structure.

Fluid-cooled wound strip structure

A low drag fluid seal. The fluid seal includes a rigid lip separated from the rotor shaft by a gap, the gap being sufficient narrow, radially, to prevent liquid from seeping through the gap at an unacceptable rate, but sufficiently wide, radially, to avoid unacceptably high viscous drag. Fluid that seeps through the gap accumulates in a recovery cavity and is recovered by a scavenge pump.

An electric machine with fluid cooling. The electric machine includes a stator, the stator having a stator winding and a stator core having a plurality of stacked magnetic laminations, each of the laminations of the stator core having a plurality of apertures overlapping to form a plurality of stator fluid channels, a stator fluid channel of the plurality of stator fluid channels being not entirely axial. The electric machine further includes a rotor, the rotor having a shaft and a rotor core having a plurality of stacked magnetic laminations, each of the laminations of the rotor core having a plurality of apertures overlapping to form a plurality of rotor fluid channels, and a rotary fluid coupling in fluid communication with the rotor fluid channels. The rotor and the stator are configured to form a magnetic circuit comprising an air gap between the rotor and the stator.
