An Advanced Physical Layer (APL) adapter for enabling functional interconnection of a 2-wire APL spur to at least one industrial process legacy field device includes a first pair of terminals, APL physical layer (PHY) circuitry, a second pair of terminals and connectivity circuitry. The first pair of terminals is configured for connection to the 2-wire APL spur. The APL PHY circuitry is capacitively coupled to the first pair of terminals. The connectivity circuitry is configured to communicate with a legacy field device connected to the second pair of terminals in accordance with a legacy communication protocol and control the APL PHY circuitry to communicate through the first pair of terminals in accordance with an Ethernet protocol.

Advanced physical layer (APL) adapter for legacy field devices

To secure communications from a process plant across a unidirectional data diode to a remote system, a sending device at the plant end publishes data across the diode to a receiving device at the remote end. The publication of various data is respectively in accordance with context information (e.g., identification of data sources, respective expected rate of data generation/arrival, etc.) that is descriptive of data sources of the plant and that is recurrently provided by the sending device across the diode. A recurrence interval may be based on a tolerance for lost data or another characteristic of an application, service, or consumer of data at the remote system. The publishing may leverage an industrial communication protocol (e.g., HART-IP) and/or a suitable general-purpose communication protocol (e.g., JSON).

Publishing data across a data diode for secured process control communications

A nodal communication network of a process control or factory automation system includes nodes that are highly versatile (HV) field devices storing respective tag identifications. A DHCP server assigns respective endpoint identifications to nodes that connect to the network. A network node manager manages a mapping database that stores associations of tag identifications of network nodes with the assigned endpoint identifications, and a state database that stores updated states of the network nodes. A DNS server responds, in conjunction with the network node manager, to requests for endpoint identifications to allow nodes to be discovered within the network. An HV device node is a data source that establishes and maintains (sometimes simultaneously) respective communication sessions over the network with one or more other nodes that are consumers of the data generated by the HV devices, and data delivered via the communication sessions may be used to control an industrial process.

Node management of nodal communication networks for highly versatile field devices in control and automation systems

A control technique controls a process in a manner that reduces the number of controller changes provided to a controlled device, and so reduces the power consumption of the controlled device along with the loading of a process control communications network disposed between the controller and the controlled device. This technique is very useful in a control system having wirelessly connected field devices, such as sensors and valves which, in many cases, operate off of battery power. Moreover, the control technique is useful in implementing a control system in which control signals are subject to intermittent, non-synchronized or significantly delayed communications and/or in a control system that receives intermittent, non-synchronized or significantly delayed process variable measurements to be used as feedback signals in the performance of closed-loop control.

Reducing controller updates in a control loop

Securing communications from a process plant to a remote system includes a data diode disposed there between that allows data to egress from the plant but prevents ingress of data into the plant and its associated systems. Process plant data from the secure communications is then analyzed to detect conditions occurring at process plant entities in the process plant using various machine learning techniques. When the process plant entity is a valve, the mode of operation for the valve is determined and a different analysis is applied for each mode in which a valve operates. Additionally, the process plant data for each valve is compared to other valves in the same process plant, enterprise, industry, etc. Accordingly, the health of each of the valves is ranked relative to each other and the process plant data for each valve is displayed in a side-by-side comparison.

Process device condition and performance monitoring

A wireless field device for use in an industrial process control or monitoring system includes a controller configured to control operation of the wireless field device. Wireless communication circuitry is configured to wirelessly communicate with a remote location. An internal power source powers the wireless field device. An image capture device is coupled to the controller and configured to capture an image of an environment of the wireless field device. The controller is adapted to receive image information from the image capture device and transmit compressed image information to the remote location.

Techniques for automatically or autonomously performing signal processing-based learning in a process plant are disclosed. Generally, said techniques automatically or autonomously perform signal processing on a real-time signal that is generated based on the process plant controlling a process. Typically, the signal corresponds to a parameter value that varies over time, and the signal is processed as it is generated in real-time during on-line plant operations. Results of the signal processing may indicate characteristics of the signal, and one or more analytics functions may determine the sources of the characteristics, which may include a process element or device, a piece of equipment, and/or an asset of the process plant that is upstream, within the process, of the source of the signal. An autonomous signal processor may be integrated with or included in a process control device and/or a big data node of the process plant.

Automatic signal processing-based learning in a process plant

Securely transporting data across a unidirectional data diode interconnecting a process plant to a remote system includes provisioning, using join key material, a sending device at the plant end of the diode with a receiving device at the remote end. The join key material is used to securely share network key material that is used to encrypt/decrypt messages or packets that are transported across the diode and whose payload includes plant&#x2014;updated or re-set generated data. The shared network key material is recurrently using the join key material, and the recurrence interval may be based on a tolerance for lost data or other characteristic of an application, service, or consumer of plant data at the remote system.

Securely transporting data across a data diode for secured process control communications

Securing communications from a process plant to a remote system includes a data diode disposed therebetween that allows data to egress from the plant but prevents ingress of data into the plant and its associated systems. Data is secured across the data diode by securely provisioning a sending device at the plant end of the diode to a receiving device at the remote system end. The sending and receiving devices share secret key material that is recurrently updated. To ensure fidelity of communications across the unidirectional data diode, the sending device recurrently provides context information that is descriptive of data sources of the plant. Additionally, data transmitted from plant data sources to the sending device of the data diode may be secured using a respective security mechanism/technique, and data transmitted from the receiving device of the data diode to the remote system may be secured using a respective security mechanism/technique.

Secured process control communications

A data pipeline is used as a fundamental processing element for implementing techniques that automatically or autonomously perform signal processing-based learning in a process plant or monitoring system. Each data pipeline includes a set of communicatively interconnected data processing blocks that perform processing on one or more sources of data in a predetermined order to, for example, clean the data, filter the data, select data for further processing, perform supervised or unsupervised learning on the data, etc. The individual processing blocks or modules within a data pipeline may be stored and executed at different devices in a plant network to perform distributed data processing. Moreover, each data pipeline can be integrated into one or more higher level analytic modules that perform higher level analytics, such as quality prediction, fault detection, etc. on the processed data. The use of data pipelines within a plant network enables data collected within a plant control or monitoring system to be processed automatically and used in various higher level analytic modules within the plant during ongoing operation of the plant.

Systems, methods, and articles of manufacture to provide a search service to users of a process control system are disclosed. An example system includes a search database to store a set of searchable items associated with a process control system and to store a search profile associated with a selected query result, a publisher to collect information associated with the searchable items from the process control system and to publish the collected information to the search database, and a searcher to receive a request including the search profile and a query of the searchable items in the database, to search the searchable items based on the query, and to return at least a portion of the collected information based on the search profile.

Systems, methods and articles of manufacture to provide a search service to a process control system

A regional big data node oversees or services, during real-time operations of a process plant or process control system, a respective region of a plurality of regions of the plant/system, where at least some of the regions each includes one or more process control devices that operate to control a process executed in the plant/system. The regional big data node is configured to receive and store, as big data, streamed data and learned knowledge that is generated, received, or observed by its respective region, and to perform one or more learning analyses on at least some of the stored data. As a result of the learning analyses, the regional big data node creates new learned knowledge which the regional big data node may use to modify operations in its respective region, and/or which the regional big data node may transmit to other big data nodes of the plant/system.

A method of evaluating a potential location to add a wireless field device to an existing network of a plurality of existing wireless field devices is provided. The method includes placing a handheld field maintenance tool in the potential location and causing the handheld field maintenance tool to identify wireless field devices within communicative range of the potential location. Methods are also provided for identifying a selected field device in a process installation using a handheld field maintenance tool.
