A medical device is configured to deliver a series of electrical stimulation pulses including opposing polarity pulses. The medical device delivers a charge balancing pulse by modifying every nth pulse of the electrical stimulation pulses to reduce a net charge delivered over the series of electrical stimulation pulses. In some examples, the medical device may be an implantable medical device that is coupled to an extra-cardiovascular lead for delivering the cardiac pacing pulses.

Method and apparatus for charge balancing during delivery of electrical stimulation

Techniques are disclosed for a multi-tier system for delivering therapy to a patient. In one example, a first device senses parametric data for a patient and determines, based on a first analysis of the parametric data, that the patient is experiencing a treatable event. In response, the first device establishes wireless communication with a second device and transmits the parametric data to the second device. The second device verifies, based on a second analysis of the parametric data, whether the patient is experiencing the treatable event. The second device selects, based on the second analysis of the parametric data, an instruction for responding to the treatable event and transmits the instruction for responding to the treatable event to the first device. In some examples, in response to receiving the instruction, the first device aborts delivery of therapy for the treatable event or proceeds with delivering therapy for the treatable event.

Tiered detection of treatable events

Techniques facilitating augmented reality-assisted surgery are provided. In one example, a method is provided that includes receiving, by a first device including a processor, image data associated with an external portion of a tool located within a body of a patient, wherein the image data includes first information indicative of a first fiducial marker on the external portion of the tool. The method also includes determining one or more relative positions of an internal portion of the tool within the body relative to one or more anatomical structures of the body based on the image data and a defined configuration of the tool. The method also includes generating one or more representations of the tool within the body relative to the one or more anatomical structures based on the one or more relative positions and the defined configuration of the tool.

Systems, apparatus, methods and computer-readable storage media facilitating surgical procedures utilizing augmented reality

A communications protocol is used to provide data privacy, message integrity, message freshness, and user authentication to telemetric traffic, such as to and from implantable medical devices in a body area network. In certain embodiments, encryption, message integrity, and message freshness are provided through use of token-like nonces and ephemeral session-keys derived from device identification numbers and pseudorandom numbers.

Secure telemetric link

This disclosure describes an operational mode of a telemetry module. A device, such as a programming device, operating in accordance with the techniques of this disclosure determines that a transceiver of an implantable medical device is operating in a duty cycled operational mode that includes at least one interval during which the transceiver is powered down interleaved with intervals during which the transceiver is powered up, e.g., for transmitting or receiving communications over an established communication session. The programming device is configured to transmit information during the at least one interval in which the transceiver of the implantable medical device is powered down. Doing so ensures that the channel over which the programmer and implantable medical device communicate will not be usurped by another device.

Transceiver duty cycled operational mode

Waveforms are digitally sampled and compressed for storage in memory. The compression of the data includes generating a truncated entropy encoding map and using the values within the map to obtain good compression. An encoder further sub-selects values to be encoded and values to remain unencoded to provide an overall compression of the data.

System and method for smoothing sampled digital signals

A wireless telemetry module and associated method reject interference in a received signal. The wireless telemetry module includes an antenna receives a communication signal transmitted at a desired channel frequency and having a channel bandwidth. A transceiver is controlled to operate in receiving and transmitting modes by a processor. An interference rejection module receives control signals from the processor corresponding to the desired channel frequency and is coupled between the antenna and the transceiver when the transceiver is operating in the receiving mode.

Preselector interference rejection and dynamic range extension

Channel assessment and selection for wireless communication is made between two or more medical devices, such as between an implantable medical device (IMD) and a non-implanted medical device, between two IMDs, or between two non-implanted medical devices. A telemetry module of a medical device operating in accordance with the techniques of this disclosure obtains measured ambient power levels on a plurality of channels of a frequency band regulation, such as the ten channels of the MICS band regulation. The telemetry module computes channel assessment values for at least a portion of the plurality of channels based on the measured ambient power levels on at least one other channel of the plurality of channels and selects a channel to transmit on based on the channel assessment values.

Channel assessment and selection for wireless communication between medical devices

An implantable medical device (IMD) and method are provided in which a telemetry module in the IMD includes a configurable polling interval at which the telemetry module is powered up from a low power inactive state to perform sniff operations for detecting whether communication signals are being received from an external device. The IMD includes at least one sensor for sensing at least one parameter, a controller receiving data from the sensor, and the telemetry module coupled to the controller for facilitating communication between the IMD and an external device. The polling interval of the telemetry module is configured based upon the parameter(s) sensed by the sensor, such that the polling interval is configured to conserve power consumption of the IMD. The polling interval is either decreased or increased to respectively increase or decrease the frequency of the sniff operations based on the parameters sensed at the IMD.

Telemetry control for implantable medical devices

A method and apparatus are provided for low power simultaneous frequency, automatic gain control and timing acquisition in a low power radio receiver. A baseband signal received is split into a limited signal having limited data and a non-limited signal. The limited signal is fed through a limited phase-shift keying (PSK) correlation path in which a PSK correlator operating on the limited signal simultaneously determines coarse frequency estimations, timing estimations, and packet synchronization detection. The non-limited signal is fed through an automatic gain control path where automatic gain control is performed on the non-limited signal simultaneously with the coarse frequency and timing estimations and packet synchronization detection performed by the PSK correlator. By operating the PSK correlator on limited data from the received baseband signal and through a separate path from the automatic gain control, substantial power savings are achieved without degrading performance since the preamble time is significantly reduced.

Method and apparatus for low power simultaneous frequency, automatic gain control and timing acquisition in radio receivers

This disclosure describes to techniques to compensate for distortions introduced into received signals by one or more receiver components that have undesirable electrical responses, such as nonlinear phase response, sloped (or non-flat) amplitude response or both. An external device or other device with more power resources than an IMD filters signals to be transmitted to the IMD to pre-compensate for distortions introduced by the undesired electrical responses of the one or more receiver components of the IMD. In this manner, at least a portion of the burden of digital processing to compensate for undesired electrical responses of the receiver components is shifted from the IMD to the external device, which is better equipped to perform such heavy computationally complex functions.
