The same command surface on a page may be associated with unrelated components and applications. Each of the components registers the commands associated with a shared command surface that they will be utilizing. Each component may utilize an arbitrary number of commands that are associated with the command surface. The command manager acts as a message broker between the components on the page and the command surfaces. When a command that is associated with a command surface is received, the command manager dispatches the command message to the appropriate components.

Associating command surfaces with multiple active components

In one implementation, a document having one or more content items is presented in a web browser to a user. A user input to select a content item in the displayed document and a transfer request to transfer the selected content item to the system cupboard are received. In response to the received transfer request, the content item is transformed in an editing surface embedded in the document from a source format of the content item into a target format compatible with the system clipboard. The content item transformed into the target format can then be transferred to the system clipboard.

Techniques to modify a document using a latent transfer surface

A document having one or more content items is presented in a web browser to a user. A user input to select a content item in the displayed document and a transfer request to transfer the selected content item to the system clipboard are received. In response to the received transfer request, the content item is transformed in an editing surface embedded in the document from a source format of the content item into a target format compatible with the system clipboard. The content item transformed into the target format can then be transferred to the system clipboard.

Techniques include modifying a document using a latent transfer surface. An apparatus may comprise a document editing subsystem comprising a transfer surface creation module operative to embed a latent transfer surface in the document. A transfer control module may be communicatively coupled to the transfer surface creation module. The transfer control module may be operative to receive a transfer request to transfer media content for the document, and transfer the media content using the latent transfer surface in response to the transfer request.

An application synchronizes views during document presentation. The application detects a selection of a section of a portion of presented content at a presenter view. The application shifts the portion of the content displayed at an attendee view to bring to focus the selection. Alternatively, the application displays the selection in a pop-out view pane within the attendee view to bring to focus the selection. The application also shifts content in the attendee view according to an offset ratio calculated from comparing a non-displayed section of a page of the document and a displayed section of a page of the document within the presenter view.

Synchronizing views during document presentation

A method and system for routing a query to one or more providers. The system may include a search interface for presenting a service list including one or more services offered by the one or more providers, permitting selection of one or more of the one or more services, and a query entry for receiving input of the query. A search processor is capable of receiving and parsing the query. A service recognizer for a particular provider is capable of receiving and analyzing one or more terms of the query to determine if the particular provider is a match for the query. A query router can route the query to the particular provider if the particular provider is determined to be a match and block the query to the particular provider if the particular provider is determined not to be a match. A results interface presents results of the query.

Method, system, and apparatus for routing a query to one or more providers

Technologies are described herein for editing a document using a transitory editing surface. A word processing program displays a document in a window. Upon detection of the placement of an insertion pointer within a paragraph of text in the document, an editing surface is created overlaying the paragraph in the window and containing the contents of the underlying paragraph. User input is monitored by the word processing program while the editing of the contents is processed by the editing surface. When editing is complete, the modified contents of the editing surface are copied into the document and the editing surface is destroyed.

Editing a document using a transitory editing surface

A lightweight information user interface is provided for displaying information about a focused-on (e.g., mouse-over) text item, data item or other object in an electronic document that minimizes interruption of workflow with the electronic document. Upon focus on a word or other object in an electronic document a quick look-up function may be invoked for retrieving information from a local or remote information source about the focused-on item. Retrieved information, for example, translations, dictionary definitions and research information, is displayed in close proximity to the focused-on item in a lightweight information user interface. Information may be displayed according to a variety of media types including text, audio, video, pictures, bitmap images, etc.

Lightweight reference user interface

Relative attributes of floating objects are disclosed. A user may obtain a floating object and specify that an attribute of the floating object is relative to a layout object of a page. In one aspect, the magnitude of relativity is determined, and the attribute of the floating object is maintained in accordance with the magnitude of relativity. In this manner, a page remains dynamically robust during page formatting operations and/or changes in page layout.

A method and apparatus are provided for utilizing a document object model to manage document parts for use in an electronic document. The document object model enables a user to retrieve, insert, add, and delete document parts to and from an electronic document using a programmable interface from within a word processing application program. A document part programming interface is exposed in the object model and methods associated with the object model are called which return objects enabling the location and management of document parts in a document parts collection.

Method and apparatus for utilizing an object model to manage document parts for use in an electronic document

A method, system, and computer-readable medium are provided for creating, inserting, and reusing document parts in an electronic document. According to a system, a word processing application program receives a selection of a document part category. In response to the selection of the document part category, a gallery of document parts is displayed in a user interface. A selection of a document part from the gallery is received and inserted in the electronic document without the need for additional formatting. The gallery of document parts defines a page layout for the electronic document. Document parts may be created within the user interface by modifying pre-built document parts.

Method, system, and computer-readable medium for creating, inserting, and reusing document parts in an electronic document

A method and system are provided for communicating results to a query for data in a computer network utilizing a graphical user interface. A framework on a client computer registers the client computer with an information service provider. Then the framework receives the query for data from the user interface. The framework creates a query packet including the query for data. A remote computer in communication with the framework resident on the local computing device receives the query packet from the framework and sends a response packet to the framework. After receiving the response packet, the framework determines whether the response packet contains a result to the data query. If the response packet contains a result to the data query, the framework formats the result for presentation to a user via the user interface on the local computing device. If the response packet, does not contain a result to the data query the framework may send a status message, indicating that no results were returned for the data query, to the user interface. The data in the query packet and the response packet may be formatted in a data format such as Extensible Markup Language ('XML').

Method, system, and computer-readable medium for communicating results to a data query in a computer network

An interactive formatting tool enables a user to analyze and modify the formatting properties that have been applied to a text string. A user can invoke the formatting tool by displaying an Interactive Formatting Pane and then selecting a text string for analysis. The Interactive Formatting Pane will display all formatting properties applied to the text selection, including font properties, paragraph properties, and section properties. The Interactive Formatting Pane may also display table format properties, frame format properties, cell format properties and bullets and numbering format properties, if applicable. The user may then select a formatting category (e.g., font size) from the Interactive Formatting Pane and a format modification dialog will be displayed. The format modification dialog enables the user to modify the formatting properties associated with the selected formatting category. The Interactive Formatting Pane also includes a compare selection checkbox. The Interactive Formatting Pane will highlight the formatting differences between the selections. The user may then select each highlighted difference and reconcile the formatting properties of the two selections.
