A vacuum die-casting machine has a sprue cavity with sufficient depth facing the shot cylinder that the shot cylinder piston can easily crush with a pressure of less than 1000 psi the thin cylindrical shell of solidified metal which develops into the biscuit, and continue to advance after the die cavity becomes fried with molten metal to inject additional molten metal into the die cavity to make up for shrinkage porosity as the cast part cools. The runner through which the molten metal passes from the sprue cavity into the die cavity has generally spherical reservoirs adjacent circular gates to further assure the supply of the additional molten metal to make up for shrinkage in the part. In addition, the piston can be oil cooled steel to delay formation of the biscuit.

The shot sleeve of the invention is used in a die casting machine and defines a bore for containing molten metal to be injected into a die. At least one passageway disposed generally parallel to the bore for containing a first fluid having a fluid temperature and a fluid flow rate is provided, whereby substantially uniform temperatures can be maintained across the width of the shot sleeve by controlling the fluid temperature of the fluid flow rate or both the fluid temperature and the fluid flow rate. A die casting machine and an associated method are also disclosed.

The flow rate of molten aluminum through a trough is measured by damming off the trough and diverting the flow through the measuring tube of a magnetic flow meter having a diameter, and located at a level in the trough to create a head of molten aluminum sufficient to produce a flow through the tube which is within the operating range of the meter. The apparatus includes a pair of spaced apart dam members forming a cavity therebetween which is transversed by the measuring tube. The magnet of the flow meter is located in the cavity preferably in a housing through which cooling air is circulated. The electrodes are made of an electrically conductive material which is resistant to corrosion by the molten aluminum, preferably, titanium diboride. Spring biased tapered connections seal the measuring tube with the dam members which have peripheral seals to keep molten aluminum out of the cavity.

A known 'spark cup process' may be operated without the spark cup if the violent fluctuations in the melt surface with which the electric arc is struck are accommodated so as to allow the electric arc to be maintained substantially continuously. Controlling the dynamic profile of the melt surface without a spark cup allows continuous operation of the electric arc which generates enough plasma to permit addition of as much as 1000 lb/hr of a spray of superheated feed material to a flowing stream of melt which assimilates the feed material.

Method of alloying feed material into molten metal

Apparatus for commutating an electrical current to an electrically conductive rod of an alloying element during the feed thereof to a body of molten metal for purposes of changing the alloy composition of the metal. The apparatus includes a power supply capable of providing electrical current in amounts sufficient to melt a free end of the rod of alloying material into the molten metal, and a pair of parallel adjacent shafts of substantial cross-section. A pair of commutation wheels are mounted respectfully on said shafts for rotatably engaging the rod between the wheels and for conducting current to the rod. Means are provided for forcing the wheels against the rod to provide intimate electrical and physical contact between the rod and wheels. A plurality of stationary brushes are disposed to physically engage each of said shafts along the length thereof for supplying current to the shafts from the power supply, and from the shafts to the wheels engaging the rod.

A method for adding alloying material to a molten metal media, such as molten aluminum, is disclosed. The method includes converting the alloying material into a spray of superheated alloy material and directing the spray into the molten metal media at a depth below the media's surface to enhance dissolution and dispersion of the alloying material in the molten media.

An apparatus for the receipt of a recyclable container is disclosed. The apparatus includes a manually rotatable carrier having a container receiving station. The recyclable container is inserted into the receiving station where the presence or absence of a container having a metallic sidewall is determined prior to any movement apparent to the user. If the object inserted into the receiving station is determined to be a container having a metallic sidewall, rotation of the carrier for further processing of the recyclable container is permitted. The initial passive screening may include detecting the orientation of the container, detection for the type of metal sidewall, and may also include optical scanning of the container for reading a product code thereon.

A method for converting low-density objects into a bale that is suitable for transportation and storage. A bale made in accordance with the method of the invention comprises a first compressed biscuit having a recessed groove; a second compressed biscuit adjacent the first biscuit and a strapping means inserted into the groove and extending circumferentially around the first and second biscuits. The invention is particularly useful for making bales of compressed biscuits from recycled aluminum containers.

Apparatus for processing used containers having improved crusher means

Apparatus is provided for the insertion of a recyclable container into a container receiving station in a manually operated rotatable carrier normally maintained in a non-rotatable condition; and for analysis and initial acceptance or rejection of the container for recycling without mechanical movement apparent to the user. The apparatus includes detecting means adjacent the receiving station to determine the presence of a container comprised of material acceptable for recycling and scanning means for reading code markings on the container. The information read from the code markings on the container may be recorded for subsequent use in determining amounts of deposits to be paid as well as sources of containers. Releasing means are provided for subsequently permitting movement of said rotatable carrier if said container comprises a material acceptable for recycling.

A process for recycling containers such as used aluminum beverage cans comprises sensing the presence of an acceptable container inserted into a receiving station in a rotatable carrier and unlatching a latching mechanism to permit the carrier to be rotated if the presence of an acceptable container is sensed. Rotation of the carrier conveys the container to a station where the container is crushed. A receipt is then issued for the crushed container. The process is controlled by a central control unit which may include a computer having a program to monitor and control the process steps.

Process for recycling containers

Apparatus is provided for receiving and crushing containers consisting essentially of recyclable material comprising an enclosure having a manually operated rotatable carrier with a first station comprising a pocket in the carrier to receive a container. Means are provided for detecting the presence of a container in the pocket and for detecting the type of material comprising the wall of the container. The apparatus also contains latching means to prevent rotation of the rotatable carrier until a container inserted therein has passed all tests performed in the first station. Means are also provided for measuring the weight of the container and for crushing metallic containers having a predetermined acceptable weight.

Apparatus for processing recyclable containers

Apparatus is provided for receiving and crushing containers consisting essentially of recyclable material comprising an enclosure having a manually operated rotatable carrier with one or more stations comprising pockets in the carrier to permit insertion of a container. Means are also provided to detect the presence of a container inserted into the pocket. Shock absorbing means are associated with the rotatable carrier to inhibit damage to the apparatus by rapid or jerking motions during rotation of the carrier to transport an inserted container to one or more subsequent stations for testing and eventual crushing of a container accepted for recycling.

Container recycling apparatus having shock mounted manually rotatable

Recycling apparatus for receiving and crushing recyclable containers is provided comprising a frame and an enclosure. A manually operated rotatable carrier is associated with the enclosure and has at least one open pocket therein to receive a recyclable container. The apparatus also is provided with detector means to determine the presence of a container in the pocket. Means are provided to lock the rotatable carrier to substantially prevent rotation of the carrier unless a container has been inserted into the pocket. Releasing means are also provided to permit rotation in response to actuation by the detector means when a container has been inserted into the pocket. The container is eventually crushed after rotation of the carrier to carry a container inserted into the pocket to a crushing station.
