A care system includes a mobile communication device, a remote server, and a patient support system that is in communication with either or both of the mobile communication device and the remote server. The mobile communication device may operate as a user interface for the patient support system. The remote server may provide computing power for the patient support system for resource intensive computing tasks.

Monitoring patient vital signs is performed by analyzing videos recorded of a patient. An algorithm is used to compute the real-time patient vital signs based on video images of the patient. These images can be captured by a video monitoring device positioned over a patient's bed. The video monitoring device can include a thermal camera and a near infrared camera that continuously send video images to a processing unit. The thermal image is used to locate the patient's face and chest. The images are analyzed with an algorithm employed to determine a patient's heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, and body position.

Video used to estimate vital signs

A charting system is provided for use in a healthcare facility having a network. The charting system includes a microphone to receive voice inputs from a caregiver. A vital sign monitor obtains a vital sign from a patient and displays it. The system includes a communication device having a voice-to-text module that includes a processor coupled to the microphone. The processor operates a voice-to-text algorithm that converts the vital sign into text in response to the caregiver dictating the vital sign into the microphone. The processor initiates transmission of the vital sign to an EMR computer via the network after conversion of the at least one vital sign to text.

A second imager is operably coupled to the first imager. The second imager is configured to capture second image data of the target area within a second field of view. A controller is communicatively coupled to the first imager, the second imager, and the emitter. The controller is configured to determine a facial region of a person in the first image data, determine a region of interest in the second image data that coincides with the facial region in the first image data, and determine a coordinate of a head position within the facial region.

A method includes receiving, by a processing device of a monitoring device, LWIR image data from a first imaging component of the monitoring device and NIR image data from a second imaging component of the monitoring device, determining one or more boundaries of the patient support apparatus from the NIR image data, constructing one or more virtual boundaries that correspond to the boundaries of the patient support apparatus, determining a location of the subject with respect to the virtual boundaries from at least one of the LWIR image data and the NIR image data, determining a facial temperature and a heart rate of the subject from the LWIR image data, and determining a respiration rate of the subject from at least one of the LWIR image data and the NIR image data.

A patient monitoring system includes a first imager configured to capture first image data of a target area within a first field of view. A second imager is configured to capture second image data of the target area within a second field of view. An emitter is configured to emit light within a predetermined wavelength range. A controller is configured to determine a facial region of a person in the first image data, determine a region of interest in the second image data that coincides with the facial region in the first image data, calculate a pixel value within the region of interest, adjust at least one of the emitter and the second imager is the pixel value is outside a predetermined pixel value range, and determine vital signs information from at least one of the first image data and the second image data.

Systems for voice control of medical devices in a healthcare facility are disclosed herein. The systems employ continuous speech processing software, voice recognition software, natural language processing software, and other software to permit voice control of the medical devices. Systems are also provided for distinguishing which medical device from among multiple medical devices in a patient room is the particular medical device to be controlled by voice input from a caregiver or a patient.

Patient beds having at least two locating tags are used for establishing patient care zones around the patient beds. Locating anchors and equipment tags are moved around a patient room to determine optimum locating anchor placement within the patient room based on signal quality values. A locating tag on a patient bed switches roles to operate as a locating anchor in response to the patient bed becoming stationary. A locating tag has a digital compass which is used to determine a field of good ranging relative to a front of a caregiver wearing the locating tag.

A protective dressing includes an outer dressing and an adhesive layer. The outer dressing includes an opening and a cavity sized to receive a phase-change material (PCM) insert inserted through the opening. The adhesive layer is configured to adhere to a patient's skin surrounding an anatomic site. When adhered to the patient's skin, the PCM insert modifies the patient's skin at the anatomic site. The PCM insert may be removed and replaced with another PCM insert. For example, a warm PCM insert may be replaced with a refrigerated PCM insert. The opening of the outer dressing may be self-sealing. The opening of the outer dressing may be sealed with an upper layer dressing coupled to the PCM cooling insert.

The displays include a status board display located at a master nurse station, an in-room display provided by a room station of a nurse call system, an electronic medical records (EMR) display of an EMR computer, and a mobile device display of a mobile device of a caregiver assigned to the patient.

A monitoring system that includes an infrared detector comprising a field of view that detects temperature data from the field of view and provides a signal indicative of at least a detected temperature of a subject. The system includes a tab comprising a tab temperature that is positioned within the field of view such that the infrared detector detects the tab and emits a signal indicative of a detected temperature of the tab. The system includes a temperature sensor secured to the tab that detects the tab temperature and provides a signal indicative of a reference temperature. A control unit is communicatively coupled to the infrared detector and the temperature sensor and computes a net value between the detected temperature of the subject and the detected temperature of the tab. The control unit calculates a core temperature of the subject by combining the net value with the reference temperature.
