Embodiments of the present disclosure provide an improved method and apparatus for thermal monitoring for a metal additive manufacturing system. An emissivity value of a top surface of an object to be manufactured is determined based, at least in part, on an arithmetic product of a predetermined roughness value and a predetermined slope-related value. The predetermined roughness value and slope-related values are predetermined based, at least in part, on measurements of a previously manufactured object. The system sinters a metal to form the top surface of the object to be manufactured. An infrared sensor detects radiation from at least a portion of the top surface of the object to be manufactured. A temperature is generated based, at least in part, on the detected infrared radiation and the emissivity value and the generated temperature is applied to a temperature utilization component of the system.

Methods and apparatus for improved thermal monitoring by correlating infrared emissivity to surface topography

An explosive device is described herein, wherein the explosive device includes a substrate that has a surface, wherein surface energy of a portion of the surface of the substrate has been modified in a vacuum chamber from a first surface energy to a second surface energy. The explosive device additionally includes explosive material that has been deposited on the surface of the substrate in the vacuum chamber by way of physical vapor deposition (PVD), wherein the explosive material is deposited on the portion of the surface of the substrate subsequent to the surface energy of the portion of the surface of the substrate being modified from the first surface energy to the second surface energy.

An apparatus for accurate measurement of surface and sub-surface temperatures of an object from a distance without contacting the object is provided. Illustrative embodiments provide for simultaneous measurement of thermal emission and emissivity in the mm-wave regime thereby enabling real-time non-contact measurement of emissivity. Corrected temperatures for the object which may be used for calibration of infrared thermographic cameras are determined from the measurement of emissivity.

Passive millimeter wave radiometer system for calibration of infrared cameras

A superhydrophilic thin film is formed on a metal surface of a boiler vessel to alter the wettability and roughness of the surface, which, in turn, changes the boiling behavior at the surface. The superhydrophilic film is formed by depositing a layer of a first ionic species on the surface from a solution. A second ionic species having a charge opposite to the that of the first ionic species is then deposited from solution onto the surface to produce a bilayer of the first ionic species and the oppositely charged second ionic species. The depositions are then repeated to form a plurality of bilayers, on top of the preceding bilayer. The bilayers are then heated, leaving the second ionic species on the metal surface to form a superhydrophilic film.
