The present invention relates to a method comprising the steps of a) applying a 0.1-mm to 2-mm thick layer of a pigmented coating composition onto a cement, concrete, or asphalt substrate, and b) allowing the coating to composition to dry. The method of the present invention is useful for preparing a traffic paint with improved color retention and durability.

Method for applying a coating composition to a substrate

The present invention relates to a method comprising the steps of: a) contacting an acrylate monomer, a carboxylic acid monomer, and a chain transfer agent under free radical polymerization conditions to form a solution of a polymer having an Min the range of from 5,000 to 50,000 Daltons; b) contacting the solution with a base and an ethylenically unsaturated glycidyl functionalized monomer to form a solution of an ethylenically unsaturated acrylate polymer; c) contacting the solution of the ethylenically unsaturated functionalized acrylate polymer with water to form an aqueous dispersion of ethylenically unsaturated functionalized acrylate polymers; and d) removing the organic solvent. The method of the present invention provides a composition suitable for use as a UV curable coating that achieves an excellent balance of hardness, flexibility, and warmth with less reliance on costly MFAs.

Method for preparing a UV curable coating composition

The present invention relates to a method comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a backbone comprising structural units of an acrylate monomer and a carboxylic acid monomer, wherein a portion of the structural units of the carboxylic acid monomer are functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate, wherein the glycidyl methacrylate functionalized polymer particles have a number average molecular weight in the range of 5,000 to 50,000 Daltons. The composition of the present invention provides a UV curable coating that achieves an excellent balance of hardness and flexibility, with less reliance on the use of multifunctional acrylates.

The present invention provides stable, quick drying aqueous compositions useful in making traffic markings having excellent low temperature flexibility which comprise (i) one or more vinyl or acrylic emulsion polymers chosen from single stage and multi-stage emulsion polymers, the polymer or at least one stage thereof having both a calculated glass transition temperature (calculated Tg) of from &#x2212;25 to 0&#xb0; C., and a calculated Hansch parameter of 1.4 to 2.25, and (iii) one or more fillers, extenders and/or pigments, wherein the composition has a percent pigment volume concentration (% PVC) of from 50 to 80% and, preferably, a volume solids of from 50 to 75%. The compositions may comprise one or more silanes, and one or more polyamines and a volatile base, such as ammonia.

Durable aqueous compositions for use in making traffic markings having good dirt pickup resistance and traffic markings made therewith

The present invention relates to a coating composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a) carboxylate salt functionalized first thermoplastic polymer particles; b) second thermoplastic polymer particles imbibed with a thermosettable compound and functionalized with anti-agglomerating groups; c) an extender; and d) a volatile base. The composition of the present invention is suitable as a waterborne quick-set formulation useful as a traffic paint.

The present invention provides aqueous polymer compositions containing one or more, or, preferably, two or more markers selected from a C-Calkyl phenyl ether having a formula Ph(R)(OR), wherein Ph is an aromatic ring containing group having from six to nine carbon atoms, Ris a C-Calkyl group, Ris a C-Calkyl group, m is an integer of from 0 to 5, n is an integer of from 1 to 3, and (m+n) is an integer of from 1 to 6. The markers are readily detectable, such as by mass spectroscopy, upon solvent extraction and separation from the aqueous polymer compositions, or from dried or cured coatings, film or layers thereof.

Markers for aqueous compositions

The present invention provides aqueous polymer compositions containing one or more, or, preferably, two or more triphenylmethyl alkyl aryl ether markers having a formula (PhC)Ar(OR), wherein Ph is a phenyl group, Ar is an aromatic ring containing group having from six to twenty carbon atoms, R is a C-Calkyl group, m is an integer of from 1 to 2, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4. Provided is a binder composition and its use in aqueous based paints and coatings and other applications. The binder composition comprises: a polyurethane dispersion containing water and a polyurethane polymer, wherein the polyurethane polymer is prepared by reacting a nitroalcohol compound, a polyol compound, a polyisocyanate compound, and optionally chain extenders, wherein the nitroalcohol compound is of formula I, wherein R, R, and Z are as defined herein.

Acrylic dispersions with multi-functional acrylates for UV-cure coatings

The instant invention provides a crosslinkable aqueous composition, method of producing the same, crosslinked compositions, and method of producing the same. The crosslinkable composition comprising: an aqueous dispersion comprising; (a) water; (b) a polycarbamate comprising at least an average of 2.0 carbamate functional groups; (c) a polyaldehyde comprising at least two aldehyde groups; (d) an acid catalyst; and (e) optionally one or more surfactants; wherein said aqueous dispersion has a pH in the range of less than 7; and wherein said composition is capable of being crosslinked at a temperature in range of less than 80&#xb0; C. upon substantial removal of water.
