An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block that defines a cylinder and a cylinder head mounted to the cylinder block. The engine additionally includes a gas compressor configured to selectively pressurize air being received from the ambient for delivery to the cylinder. The engine also includes an intake valve that is operatively connected to the cylinder head and controls delivery of the selectively pressurized air to the cylinder for combustion therein. Furthermore, the engine includes an air inlet assembly arranged between the intake valve and the compressor. The air inlet assembly is configured to supply the pressurized air to the cylinder and includes at least one passage configured to collect a condensate from the pressurized air. A vehicle having such an engine is also disclosed.

Air inlet assembly for an internal combustion engine

An assembly includes a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold that has four exhaust flow passages directing cylinder exhaust from inlets arranged to correspond with exhaust from the four cylinders, respectively, and has only three outlets. The assembly includes a twin scroll turbocharger having a housing with a first scroll passage, a second scroll passage, and only three inlets. Two of the exhaust flow passages join in the cylinder head to direct exhaust flow into only one of the inlets of the housing and through the first scroll passage. Exhaust flow through the other two of the exhaust flow passages flows separately into the other two inlets in the housing and joins in the housing to flow through the second scroll passage.

A first fuel rail of an engine connects to first fuel injectors and a second fuel rail connects to second fuel injectors. The first fuel injectors each includes a tip portion projecting through an opening in the cylinder head into the combustion chamber. The second fuel injectors each includes a tip portion projecting through an opening in a bottom portion of an intake port. The first fuel rail includes first mounting brackets each including an aperture, and outwardly projecting mounting bosses, and fixedly attaches to the cylinder head via fasteners that pass through the apertures of the first mounting brackets and attach to the mounting bosses of the cylinder head. The second fuel rail includes second mounting brackets each including an aperture. The second fuel rail fixedly attaches to the first fuel rail via fasteners that attach to the mounting bosses of the first fuel rail.

A cylinder head for an internal combustion engine defines first and second intake passages for supplying air through first and second intake valve openings to first and second cylinders. The cylinder head also defines first and second exhaust passages for conveying first and second streams of exhaust gas from first and second exhaust valve openings associated with first and second cylinders. The first exhaust valve opening is disposed outboard of the first intake valve opening, and the second exhaust valve opening is disposed outboard of the second intake valve opening.

An engine assembly may include an engine structure, a camshaft rotationally supported within the engine structure and including a lobe, a first rocker arm, a valve lift mechanism, a valve, and a second rocker arm. The first rocker arm may include a first end rotationally coupled relative to the engine structure and a second end defining a cam engagement surface engaged with the lobe and a convex lift surface opposite the cam engagement surface. The valve lift mechanism may have a first end engaged with the lift surface of the first rocker arm. The second rocker arm may be supported relative to the engine structure and engaged with a second end of the valve lift mechanism and the valve to selectively open the valve based on displacement of the lift mechanism by the first rocker arm.

An engine assembly may include a cylinder head and a fluid control assembly. The cylinder head may include first and second walls opposite one another and extending from a base region defining a cavity. The cylinder head may define a first oil passage extending through an interior surface defining the cavity. The fluid control assembly may include a first oil control valve and a first conduit. The first oil control valve may be fixed to the base region and may define a first port in fluid communication with the first oil passage and a second port in fluid communication with a second oil passage in the cylinder head. The first conduit may extend from the first oil control valve toward the first wall and may provide the fluid communication between the first port of the oil control valve and the first oil passage in the cylinder head.

Modular engine assembly and fluid control assembly for hydraulically-actuated mechanism

An intake assembly for a 3-cylinder, V-configured engine comprises an intake manifold configured to conduct combustion air to a first, two-cylinder, cylinder head housing assembly and a second, single-cylinder, cylinder head housing assembly. A centrally extending plenum defines a plenum axis. A first plurality of intake runners, in fluid communication with the plenum, extend from a front side and transition through a circumferential arc around an upper side to deliver combustion air to, the first, two-cylinder, cylinder head housing assembly. A single intake runner, in fluid communication with the centrally extending plenum, extends from a rear side and transitions through a circumferential arc around the upper side to deliver combustion air to, the second, single-cylinder, cylinder head housing assembly. A zip tube delivers combustion air to the central plenum at a location that is between one of the first plurality of intake runners and the single cylinder intake runner.

A high performance overhead valvetrain assembly includes a hydraulic lash adjuster which is received within and supports a trunnion. The trunnion, in turn, is received within a cylindrical passageway in one end of a rocker arm. The opposite end of the rocker arm engages a valve stem. Between the trunnion and the valve stem is a roller adapted the engage a cam of a camshaft. The trunnion stabilized rocker arm permits significantly increased valve lift and improved engine performance.

High performance overhead valvetrain assembly

A hydraulically lashed end pivot rocker arm assembly finds application in high performance valve trains of internal combustion engines. The rocker arm is mounted at one end upon an eccentric bearing assembly and includes a surface for engaging a valve stem at the opposite end and a roller engaged by a camshaft disposed between the ends. The eccentric bearing assembly includes a stub shaft or cylindrical body that is received within a bore in the rocker arm and an eccentric bore which receives an inner shaft which extends along the cylinder head and supports the eccentric bearings and the rocker arm assemblies. The stub shaft or cylindrical body includes an ear or lug which is engaged by a hydraulic lash adjuster disposed parallel to and offset from the vertical plane of motion of the rocker arm.

A rocker arm shaft retainer includes an elongated contoured sheet-like body having two opposite ends, two opposite sides longer in length than the ends, and a central portion between the sides. A plurality of fingers extend from the central portion towards the sides and each finger has a contoured recess for engaging a rocker shaft. The fingers define slots for receiving rocker arms. The retainer further includes a plurality of thrust faces along edges of the fingers for axial positioning of rocker arms on a rocker shaft. A plurality of bosses are also disposed on the fingers, each of the bosses having a generally flat surface.

Rocker arm shaft retainer and assembly

An engine accessory belt drive includes a self-aligning pulley assembly including a relatively stationary outer assembly and a universally pivotable inner assembly supported by the outer assembly and able to be locked in position by tightening of a fastener. During alignment of the self-aligning pulley with the belt, the fastener is maintained in the loose position, allowing limited universal pivoting of the rotational axis of the pulley as a result of belt tension forces which act to align the pulley. After the pulley is aligned, the fastener is tightened to fix the rotational axis of the pulley and the inner assembly in the aligned position of the pulley. Features of the inner and outer assemblies of the pulley assembly are also described.

Engine accessory belt drive with self-aligning pulley

A rocker arm assembly includes an inner rocker arm and an outer rocker arm. The outer rocker arm includes two rail portions spaced a distance apart and forming an open space therebetween. The inner rocker arm is pivotably connected to the outer rocker arm such that it is at least partially within the open space. The inner rocker arm includes a locking pin housing containing two locking pins selectively engageable with holes in each of the rail portions to selectively prevent relative movement between the inner rocker arm and the outer rocker arm. The rocker arm assembly enables two-step valve operation and has a design characterized by compact size and improved manufacturability.
