An article includes a surface layer and a base layer coupled to at least a portion of the surface layer. The surface layer includes a top major surface defining a plane and a bottom major surface opposite the top major surface. A plurality of projections extends from the plane of the top major surface and a plurality of microstructures extend from the plurality of projections.

Interrupted structured abrasive articles comprise an abrasive layer comprising shaped abrasive composites that extend outwardly from a first major surface of a backing to which they are secured. The abrasive layer defines at least one open region that is free of the shaped abrasive composites and may extend partially or completely through the backing. In some embodiments, each of the open regions comprises a circular area of at least 1.5 square centimeters, and when combined the open regions have total area that is at least 10 percent of the area of the first major surface of the backing. Interrupted abrasive articles are useful in single-sided polishing processes.

The invention provides abrasive articles comprising: (a) a backing having a first major surface and a second major surface; and (b) an abrasive coating consisting essentially of: (i) a hardened binder coating having a first surface adhered to the flexible backing and a second structured surface comprising a plurality of precisely-shaped protrusions; and (ii) a diamond-like carbon coating superposed and adhered to at least a portion of the structured surface of the hardened binder coating. Also reported is a method of mechanically treating a rigid disk or a rigid disk substrate using the abrasive articles of the present invention.

The present invention provides an abrasive article formed of a binder, abrasive particles associated with the binder, and a lubricating particulate additive comprising polytetrafluoroethylene associated with the binder. The abrasive article of the invention is useful in the polishing of fiber optic connectors because the lubricating particulate additive allows the polishing rate of the softer glass fiber material to be slower than the polishing rate of the harder ceramic ferrule material. Methods of manufacture and methods of polishing a fiber optic connector is also provided.
