A structure including a substrate and a coating over the substrate is acoustically excited to measure acoustic response in the structure. The measured acoustic response in the structure is filtered to remove acoustic response of the substrate and determine acoustic response of the coating. The acoustic response of the coating is used to inspect the coating for failure.

Coating inspection using steady-state excitation

A vibrometer may measure acoustic responses in portions of a structure along a scan path to acoustic excitation of the structure. A ranging device may measure distances to the portions of the structure along the scan path. A three-dimensional point cloud may be generated based on the acoustic responses in the portions of the structure and the distances to the portions of the structure. The three-dimensional point cloud may include points representing geometry of the portions of the structure. The points may be associated with the acoustic responses in corresponding portions of the structure. One or more properties of the structure may be determined based on an analysis of the three-dimensional point cloud.

Standoff inspection using geometry-informed full-wavefield response measurements

A multi-mode approach for real-time inspection of structural components may be applied to rapid, wide area measurement of thickness of thick plate-like structures using full-field multi-mode response measurement and analysis. The approach may allow estimation of thickness from full-field multi-mode response to single-tone ultrasonic excitation in thick plates. The approach may utilize wavenumber information across all available wave modes in order to make wavenumber spectroscopy sensitive to changes in thickness for a broader range of nominal initial thicknesses.

Method for real-time inspection of structural components

A system and method can include a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) in optical communication with a part during manufacturing and a transducer in ultrasonic communication with the part during manufacturing. The system can also include a controller connected to both the LDV and the transducer. The controller may be configured to cause the transducer to vibrate the part during manufacturing at a predetermined frequency and the LDV may be configured to measure one or more mechanical response types of the part during manufacturing based on one or more optical characteristics of a reflected beam. The controller may further be configured to determine whether a defect is present in the part during manufacturing in response to the one or more mechanical response types of the part.

System and method for in-process inspection within advanced manufacturing processes

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for analyzing structures by applying a continuous ultrasonic excitation and measuring steady state response of the structures using laser Doppler vibrometery, or other techniques. In one example, a method comprises applying a continuous signal having one or more periodic tones to the structure, generating measurements of wave response to the signal at each of a plurality of inspection points of the structure, and, for each of the periodic tones, estimating wavenumbers for a number of the inspection points of the structure based on the wave response measurements and the frequency of the periodic tones. The estimated wavenumbers can be used to determine properties of the structure, including defects, damage, or variation in thickness.

Nondestructive inspection using continuous ultrasonic wave generation

A significant number of rescue workers are killed or injured each year as they conduct searches within damaged or burning structures, unaware that the structure is in imminent danger of collapse. The present invention provides a system and method for detecting and monitoring structural damages which are irreversible and which lead to inevitable collapse of a building or structure. The system includes at least one accelerometer that is housed in a device that is mounted on an exterior surface outside the burn area, and within the reach of the rescue worker. The device communicates with a remote display that provides visual and/or audible signals to indicate imminent collapse of the structure. Additionally, the system includes collapse detecting analysis processes for determining the likelihood of collapse.
