A lighting unit () configured to illuminate a surface () having a proximal portion () and a distal portion () in relation to the lighting unit. The lighting unit includes a light source () configured to emit a light beam (), and an optic () positioned between the light source and the surface to modify the emitted light beam to have a largely uniform vertical illumination distribution along the surface. The input surface () of the optic faces the light source and has a convex lens portion () that directs a portion of the emitted light beam at the distal portion of the surface, and a concave lens portion () that directs a portion of the emitted light beam at the proximal portion of the surface.

Disclosed is a lighting system () that illuminates a surface () with a uniform illumination pattern (). The lighting system includes a plurality of lighting units () that each emit a light beam that has a variable vertical illumination distribution and a variable horizontal illumination distribution. The intensity of each light beam is uniform in a central region of the horizontal illumination distribution, and non-uniform at each end of the horizontal illumination distribution. Similarly, the intensity of each light beam is uniform in a central region of the vertical illumination distribution, and largely non-uniform at each end of the vertical illumination distribution. The light beams overlap in the region of horizontal nonuniformity in order to create an illumination pattern that appears uniform.

Method and apparatus for uniform illumination of a surface

Methods and apparatus are provided for producing mixed light in a direct-view luminaire. The luminaire includes a plurality of light sources () that, in combination, are configured to generate a plurality of different colors of light, a first light mixing chamber () and at least one second light mixing chamber () in light communication with the first mixing chamber through at least one opening (). At least one directly viewable light exit surface () is coupled to the first light mixing chamber. The light sources are contained in the second light mixing chamber(s), which is configured to prevent light emitted from the light sources from directly impinging on the light exit surface(s). The first light mixing chamber and the light exit surface(s) are configured to mix the light emitted from the light sources such that all light exiting the light exit surface(s) is substantially uniform in brightness and color.

Methods and apparatus related to an LED-based lighting unit () having an optical component for mixing light output from a plurality of LEDs (). In some embodiments the optical component may include at least one reflective surface interiorly thereof and the LEDs () may be vertically arranged about the reflective surface. At least some of the LEDs () may generate a light output generally directed toward the reflective surface. The reflective surface may be configured to direct at least some of the light output directly incident thereon through a light output opening () of the optical component.

Methods and apparatus related to a textured lens (). The textured lens includes a textured portion () having plurality of unique textures. The lens may be utilized in a LED-based lighting fixture () to, for example, reduce the presence of color banding and/or color shadows present in the light output of the lighting fixture. The textured portion may extend across all or portions of the lens surface.

Disclosed is an LED-based luminaire () including an optic surrounding a plurality of LEDs (). The optic may include a plurality of interior reflective surfaces for mixing light output of the LEDs and also include a transmissive diffuser () through which interiorly reflected light output of the LEDs exits the LED-based luminaire.

A defocused optic () for mixing of light output from a multichip LED (). The defocused optic () includes an outer reflector having a concave inner surface () with a varied profile. The outer reflector surrounds an interior reflector () having a convex surface (). The convex surface () of the interior reflector () is positioned to generally face a multichip LED () and may optionally have a varied profile. Appropriate selection of the design parameters of the profiles of the concave inner surface (), the profile(s) of the convex surface (), and the rotational angular range over which said profiles are present enables appropriate mixing of the light output from a given multi-chip LED ().
