Apparatuses, systems and methods for generating color video with a monochrome sensor include the acts of (i) selectively energizing each of a plurality of light sources in a sequence, (ii) capturing a monochrome image of the illuminated sample at a monochrome sensor at each stage of the sequence, and (iii) generating a color video from the monochrome images. The sequence can have a series of stages with each stage of the sequence corresponding to activation of a different wavelength of light from the light sources to illuminate a sample. Generating the monochrome video can include the acts of compiling a plurality of monochrome images captured at the monochrome sensor with a single light source into a series of monochrome video frames comprising the monochrome video.

Apparatuses, systems and methods for generating color video with a monochrome sensor

A chromatic confocal point sensor (CPS) system and associated methods are provided for measuring holes. A CPS optical pen includes a beam dividing deflecting element that directs measurement light simultaneously along at least three directions to the interior surface of the hole. A CPS electronics portion comprises a light generator, a spectrometer, and a signal processor. In operation, the CPS pen directs measurement light to the interior surface along the at least three directions, and the spectrometer receives measurement light reflected from those directions back through the pen and provides a spectral intensity profile comprising spectral peak components corresponding to distances to the interior surface along those directions. The hole characteristic may be determined based at least partially on those distances. The CPS pen may be used as a probe on a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The CPS pen does not require rotation in a hole to measure the hole.

Hole-measurement systems and methods using a non-rotating chromatic point sensor (CPS) pen

A flexible optical displacement encoder configuration uses a source grating to illuminate a scale with structured light such that light from the scale is modulated with a beat frequency envelope which may have a relatively coarse pitch that matches a desired detector pitch. An imaging configuration provides spatial filtering to remove the high spatial frequencies from the modulation envelope to provide a clean signal in the detected fringe pattern. This combination of elements allows an incremental scale track pattern with a relatively finer pitch (e.g., 4, 5, 8 microns) to provide fringes with a coarser pitch (e.g., 20 microns) at a detector. Various scale resolutions can use a corresponding source grating such that all combinations can produce detector fringes that match the same economical detector component.

Adaptable resolution optical encoder having structured illumination and spatial filtering

Optical encoder using off-axis imaging through a lens

A method and apparatus for suppressing loss of scale image contrast due to interference effects from optical path length differences, including lens profile aberrations, are provided in a displacement sensing optical encoder that uses a telecentric imaging configuration. According to the invention, the encoder is configured such that the image light that reaches the detector comprises symmetric ray bundles concentrated symmetrically on opposite sides of the optical axis center at the limiting aperture of the telecentric imaging configuration. Central ray bundles, and/or other ray bundles that have an optical path lengths significantly different than the operational symmetric ray bundles are prevented or blocked. As a result destructive interference is prevented and image contrast is improved.

Lens aberration correction in a doubly telecentric displacement sensor

A position sensing device comprises a light source that radiates diffuse source light along an optical axis direction to a detector, and a moving aperture arrangement positioned between the source and detector, to move perpendicular to the optical axis direction. The moving aperture arrangement comprises first and second limiting apertures, which angularly filter and transmit the diffuse source light to form a measurement spot on the detector. At least one signal output by the detector is indicative of a position of the movable member along a measurement axis. The angular intensity distribution of the angularly filtered rays of light which form the measurement spot is more consistent as a function of position along the measurement axis than the angular intensity distribution of the source light. The resulting consistent intensity distribution within the measurement spot throughout the measurement range enhances measurement linearity and accuracy.

Linear displacement sensor using a position sensitive photodetector

An extended range focus sensor is provided. In various embodiments, the focus sensor may include a relay lens assembly to image a plane between an objective lens and the relay lens arrangement to a plane near an entrance pupil of a focus detector arrangement of the focus sensor. In some embodiments, the objective lens pupil is imaged onto the focus detector entrance pupil. In some embodiments, an illumination beam passes through the relay lens arrangement and is magnified on its way to be output by the objective lens, and the reflected focus detection beam passes back through the objective lens and the relay lens arrangement and is reduced prior to being input to the focus detector arrangement. In some embodiments, the focus detector arrangement may comprising a broad range focus detector combined with a high resolution Shack-Hartmann focus detector, and in others a single extended range Shack-Hartmann focus detector is used.

A chromatically dispersive lens configuration may be utilized in optical pens for chromatic range sensing. The lens configuration may include a negative power doublet lens and a positive power lens portion. The Abbe numbers of lenses included in the positive power lens portion may be between the Abbe numbers of the two portions of the doublet lens. The relationship between the Abbe numbers of the materials used in two portions of the doublet lens is generally opposite to their relationship as used in standard doublet lenses of similar geometry. The doublet lens may have a negative spherical aberration which effectively cancels a positive spherical aberration that arises in the positive lens portion. In one embodiment all of the lens elements in the lens configuration are spherical lenses. The lens configuration can be implemented with dimensions which fit a standard commercial optical pen, while providing improved range sensing performance.

Chromatic sensor lens configuration

A photoelectric encoder has a telecentric optical system in which a first lens and an aperture located at a focal position of the first lens are interposed between a main scale and a photoreceptor. At least a second lens is interposed between the aperture and the photoreceptor with a focus of the second lens on the aperture, thereby constituting a bilateral telecentric optical system. This makes it possible to improve the signal detection efficiency and increase the assembly tolerance.

Photoelectric encoder

An ultra-miniature interferometric fiber-optic encoder readhead for sensing displacement of a very fine pitch scale grating is disclosed. The readhead includes a source grating that diffracts diverging source light into +/&#x2212; 1st order beams, a pair of mirrors that reflect the +/&#x2212; 1st order beams to converge toward the scale grating. The +/&#x2212; 1st order scale light beams are reflectively diffracted back from scale grating to return to the mirrors, and are then reflected to converge back toward the light source and a set of adjacent fiber-optic receiver channels. An interference field generating grating positioned in front of the receiver channels produces interference fringes having a desired pitch. Movement of the interference fringes is sensed by the fiber-optic receiver channels to provide displacement information. The readhead may be configured so that primarily or only +/&#x2212; 1order light reaches the receiver channels.

Fiber-optic miniature encoder for fine pitch scales

A method includes obtaining a measurement of a property of a light source, scanning light from the light source onto a surface, such that the light interacts with the surface, detecting light from the surface to create a picture element, and correcting the picture element with the measurement of the property. An apparatus includes a scanned beam display, the scanned beam display is configured to receive a signal and to scan the signal for viewing by a user. The signal is to contain picture element information. The picture element information includes information for a plurality of colors, wherein information for at least one color is corrected to substantially remove a perturbation to the picture element information, such that an image containing the picture element information will be substantially unchanged by the perturbation.

Apparatuses and methods for utilizing non-ideal light sources

An illumination configuration for imaging-type optical encoders is provided. The illumination configuration generates uniform brightness images of scales and two-dimensional structures when utilizing telecentric imaging optics in the encoder readhead. In one embodiment, a desirable uniform irradiance distribution is created across the field of view by illuminating with a collimated or quasi-collimated beam, but insuring that the illumination is sufficiently incoherent that potential self-images arising from periodic structures on the scale are suppressed. In one embodiment, the ratio of an effective emitter size to a focal length of the collimating lens falls within a selected range, so as to assure relatively uniform illumination across the field of view and still provide sufficiently incoherent illumination. In another embodiment, a diffuser is placed over the collimating lens, which assists in producing uniform illumination even when the direction of illumination varies relative to the scale due to misalignment between the readhead and the scale surface.

Illumination configuration for imaging-type optical encoders

A displacement measuring device including a scale, and an optical readhead including an index pattern and a light receiving element is provided. A bright/dark pattern arising from a scale grating is detected by the readhead to measure displacement. In various embodiments, a magnification of the pattern is adjusted by the spacing between at least a lens element, aperture element, and detection plane of the readhead. An aperture can be designed to provide a diffraction-limited telecentric imaging configuration that filters an image of the scale grating to provide a sinusoidal intensity pattern that supports highly interpolated measurements. An aperture dimension, selected in relation to the grating pitch and other parameters, can provide a desirable combination of readhead operating characteristics including one or more of a desired depth of field; degree of spatial filtering; and optical signal power.
