A method and system to provide fonts for electronic publications is described. An example method includes receiving a request for an electronic publication from a user device, retrieving a font identifier of a font from the electronic publication, providing the electronic publication to the user device, determining, based on the font identifier, that at least one font file of the font is not stored on the user device, and providing the at least one font file of the font to the user device.

Providing fonts for electronic publications

Some implementations include identifying conflicts between multiple layers of supplementary content associated with a digital work (e.g., an electronic book). For individual conflicts between layers of supplementary content at one or more locations within the digital work, conflicts between layers may be resolved in favor of a higher priority layer. Upon resolution of the conflict, information associated with the higher priority layer for supplementing content at a particular location in the digital work may be determined. A visual identifier of the higher priority layer may be displayed along with content associated with the digital work at the particular location.

Supplementary content layers

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are disclosed for dynamic color adjustment of electronic content. In one embodiment, a system may determine a first background color corresponding to a color theme for use in presentation of electronic content, the color theme further specifying a first text color for displaying text. The system may convert the first text color to hue-saturation-value (HSV) color space, and modify a brightness component of the first text color to generate a second text color. The system may determine a first contrast ratio between the second text color and the first background color, and determine that the first contrast ratio satisfies a first threshold contrast ratio. The system may display the electronic content using the first background color, the electronic content including text having the second text color.

Dynamic color adjustment of electronic content

Disclosed are techniques and systems to detect a layout of a source document. A process may include receiving content from a first page and a second page of the source document, designating sections in each page along a first direction of the page, and assigning similar sections to a group. For the group, the process may proceed by dividing sections for each page into discrete portions associated with 2D coordinate areas, and identifying sets of 2D coordinate areas for the discrete portions that contain content. The number of times each portion contains some content may be compared to a threshold to determine a layout of the group of sections.

Detection of layouts in electronic documents

In some examples, a computing device may receive a content item for formatting, the content item including at least one scalable object to be rendered with a portion of content during presentation of the content item on an electronic device. The computing device may convert a complex shape element in the scalable object to at least one path command that includes a sequence of one or more paths that correspond to the complex shape element. The computing device may format the at least one path command for parsing by a content parser of the electronic device. Further, the computing device may associate the at least one path command with the portion of content so that the at least one path command will be rendered in place of rendering information for the scalable object that was originally included with the content item.

Methods and apparatus for calculating paragraph layout. A method begins with a first node in a paragraph and calculates an optimal line break scheme for paragraph layout that ended in the node. For every subsequent node in the paragraph, the method calculates an optimal line break scheme for paragraph layout that ends respectively in every subsequent node. Each optimal line break scheme is calculated by minimizing the total of a penalty value of a current line and all preceding penalties of all preceding lines. The preceding penalties of all preceding lines are defined by a previously calculated optimal line break scheme.

Automated paragraph layout

Described herein are systems and methods for modifying electronic books ('eBooks'). A server processes eBook data to determine portions of one or more source fonts comprising various glyphs used in presenting the eBook. An embedded font is generated which includes those portions of the one or more fonts which are used in the particular eBook data. Because the unused portions of the one or more fonts are omitted, the overall size of the embedded fonts may be less than those of the source fonts. A custom character map may be generated as part of the embedded font which provides for increased document security.

Generation of electronic books

Systems, methods, and apparatus, including computer program products for text composition are provided. In some implementations, a method is provided. The method includes processing a plurality of paragraphs in parallel, including defining a paragraph layout for each paragraph, the paragraph layout including line breaks. The method further includes composing the text in an electronic document including serially composing each paragraph, the serial composing including shuffling the processed paragraphs into a particular position within a page frame of the electronic document.

Predictive text composition

Techniques are provided for text composition. In some implementations, a computer-implemented method is provided. The method includes receiving text to compose, the text including a plurality of paragraphs, and composing the text using paragraph composition, the paragraph composition determining a layout for the lines of each paragraph according to a line break scheme that determines line breaks for the paragraph as a whole. The method also includes, identifying limited recomposition for one or more paragraphs of the plurality of paragraphs, receiving a modification to a line of a paragraph, the paragraph having a plurality of lines and where the modified line is subsequent to a first line in the paragraph, determining whether the paragraph of the modified line is identified as having limited recomposition and, if the paragraph has limited recomposition, recomposing a portion of the paragraph using a multi-line paragraph composition process without recomposing the full paragraph.

Selectively limiting paragraph recomposition

The invention features systems, methods, and computer program products for typesetting a sequence of character glyphs. In on implementation, the invention provides a spacing classification file for a character set, the classification file being a text file, containing text form definitions of multiple character classes, each character class definition being structured to define a character class as having one or more arbitrary characters, the classification file further containing, in text form, multiple inter-class spacing definitions, each inter-class spacing definition defining, for an order pair of character classes, one or more spacing parameters for the ordered pair and an associated priority for each defined spacing parameter. A line of text can be compressed or expanded according to the inter-class spacing definitions for each sequential pairs of characters in the sequence of characters defined in the classification file according to their respective priorities.
