An artificial ramping waveform profile is applied to a burst transmission power amplifier in order to reduce transients. A profile source is supplied with a plurality of pre-determined artificial ramping profiles. At the beginning of the burst transmission ramping period, one of the artificial ramping profiles is selected and fed to the power amplifier. The selection of the artificial ramping profile is based at least in part on the first message symbol of the message to be burst transmitted. Preferably, each different possible first message symbol has its own unique corresponding artificial ramping profile, and the corresponding waveform is used to artificially ramp the power amplifier when that message symbol is the first message symbol. At the end of the ramping period, the inputs to the power amplifier are switched to the traditional signal source, such as the FIR filters, etc., for receipt of the message symbols. The transmitted signal is based then on the response of the power amplifier to the artificial ramping profile and the message symbols. The generation of transient adjacent channel power is significantly reduced by artificially ramping the power amplifier rather than allowing for natural ramping. By choosing the artificial ramping profile based on the first message symbol, the phase trajectory changes near the end of the ramping period may be significantly smoothed, thereby lessening the generation of undesired harmonic power levels.

Artificial ramping of transmit power for burst transmissions

A power savings method comprises delaying turning on the local oscillator of a mobile phone while the processor of the mobile phone sorts through a previously received neighbor list. While the local oscillator is settling at its operating frequency, the mobile phone receives signals from the neighbor list channels and measures their relative strength. Compensation factors are applied to correct for frequency errors arising from the fact that the local oscillator has not settled at its operating frequency. A method is further disclosed for generating the compensation factors for use in the power savings method.

Power conservation method in mobile communications device

Methods and systems are provided for frequency generation suitable for use in wireless devices capable of operating at multiple frequencies. Such systems may change the loop gain of an automatic frequency control loop based on the operating frequency of the wireless device. Furthermore, such a frequency dependent loop gain may be carried out by the selection of subroutines with differing loop gains associated with the subroutines. Furthermore, the loop gain may also be temperature compensated based on the temperature of the wireless device and/or the operating frequency of the device.

Methods and systems for frequency generation for wireless devices

A signal strength for a received signal such as a radio signal transmitted over a communication network is determined. The signal strength measurement is compensated for non-linear characteristics of the receiver. The compensation is provided by taking two signal strength readings with the receiver set at two different, known, gain levels. The difference between the expected change in the signal strength and the change actually measured by the receiver is used to generate a compensated signal strength measurement A table of compensation factors is generated for each signal strength which is also utilized in generating the compensated signal strength measurement. The compensated signal strength measurement reading is transmitted to the communication network for use in mobile assisted handover.
