Disclosed herein are designs, structures and techniques for advanced packaging of multi-function photonic integrated circuits that allow such high-performance multi-function photonic integrated circuits to be co-packaged with a high-performance multi-function ASIC thereby significantly reducing strenuous interconnect challenges and lowering costs, power and size of the overall devices.

An optical system includes a tunable laser that generates an optical signal at an output that is wavelength tunable. A wavelength router directs particular wavelength bands of the optical signal to particular ones of the plurality of outputs. An optical emitter emits an optical beam at an output, wherein tuning the tunable laser steers the emitted beam.

Optical instrument for imaging and sensing using multicore fiber

An interferometric measurement system includes ports configured to receive an optical signal from an optical source and an optical signal from a target. A photonic integrated circuit includes a variable delay configured to select between at least two optical paths from the input to an output such that the optical signal from the optical source passes to the output while experiencing an optical delay based on a selected one of the at least two optical paths where a loss of the optical signal from the optical source provided to the input that passes to the output is nominally the same for each of the at least two optical paths. An optical receiver is configured to receive the optical signal from the target and to receive the optical signal from the optical source that experiences the optical delay based on the selected one of the at least two optical paths and generates a corresponding electrical receive signal at an electrical output. A processor is configured to generate an interferometric measurement signal based on the receive signal.

Disclosed herein are configurations for few-mode fiber optical endoscope systems employing distal optics and few-mode, double-clad or other optical fiber wherein the systems directing an optical beam to a sample via the optical fiber; collecting light backscattered from the sample; direct the backscattered light to a detector via the optical fiber; and detect the backscattered light; wherein the directed optical beam is single mode and the collected light is one or more higher order modes.

Few-mode optical fiber measurement instrument

An optical probe imaging system includes an optical probe having a multicore optical fiber. Distal optics image light propagating in the multicore optical fiber so as to generate a light pattern on a sample that is based on a relative position of the cores. A distal motor causes the light pattern to traverse a path across the sample. An optical receiver includes a first receiver receiving light that has traversed the path across the sample from one of the at least two cores and a second receiver receiving light that has traversed the path across the sample from the other of the cores, such that the first receiver and the second receiver detect light in parallel. A processor maps relative position of the cores at the distal facet based on signals generated by the receiver.

An integrated optical system includes a wavelength tunable optical source and a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The PIC includes a set of spatial waveguide switches having an input optically coupled to the wavelength tunable optical source and a plurality of outputs. The PIC also includes an optical emitter having a plurality of inputs, each being coupled to a respective one of the plurality of outputs of the set of spatial waveguide switches, the optical emitter configured to produce at an output an optical beam having a wavelength dependent emission direction that changes as light is switched by the set of spatial waveguide switches such that the optical beam may be steered in two dimensions.

A wavelength tunable laser device includes a gain element positioned in an optical cavity that provides optical gain to an optical signal. A frequency shifter that generates a frequency shift as a function of time is positioned in the optical cavity. The optical cavity is configured so that a magnitude of the frequency shift as a function of time generated by the frequency shifter is substantially equal to a frequency separation of a cavity mode of the cavity such that an output of the cavity generates laser light having a wavelength that tunes as a function of time.

Fixed distal optics endoscope employing multicore fiber

An optical-fiber measurement system includes an optical transceiver comprising an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. A multi-core optical fiber has a proximal end with a first optical core coupled to the transceiver and a second optical core coupled to the transceiver, and a distal end with the first optical core coupled to a sample path that is configured to convey light collected from a sample positioned external to the multi-core optical fiber and the second optical core coupled to a reference path such that the sample path and the reference path experience mostly a same disturbance along the multi-core optical fiber. The optical receiver is configured to interferometrically detect light from the sample path and light from the reference path.

Disclosed herein are optical integration technologies, designs, systems and methods directed toward Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and other interferometric optical sensor, ranging, and imaging systems wherein such systems, methods and structures employ tunable optical sources, coherent detection and other structures on a single or multichip monolithic integration. In contrast to contemporary, prior-art OCT systems and structures that employ simple, miniature optical bench technology using small optical components positioned on a substrate, systems and methods according to the present disclosure employ one or more photonic integrated circuits (PICs), use swept-source techniques, and employ a widely tunable optical source(s). In another embodiment the system uses an optical photonic phased array. The phase array can be a static phased array to eliminate or augment the lens that couples light to and from a sample of interest or can be static and use a spectrally dispersive antenna and a tunable source to perform angular sweeping. The phased array can be active in 1 or 2 dimensions so as to scan the light beam in angle. The phased array can also adjust focus. The phased array can implement an optical waveform that will extend depth of field focus for imaging. The phase array can also be a separate standalone element that is fed by one or more optical fibers. The phased array can be for scanning a biomedical specimen used in conjunction with a swept-source OCT system, can be used in a free-space coherent optical communication system for beam pointing or tracking, used in LIDAR applications, or many other beam control or beam steering applications.

Designs, methods, and applications for fault localization and fiber security in optical transponders is described. In one embodiment a two-way time transfer protocol or other suitable method for synchronizing clocks between distant transponders is used. The clock synchronized transponders have digital signal processing to continually detect high precision time-histories of physical layer attributes in the transmission between the two transponders. Physical layer attributes can include: state-of-polarization changes, changes in polarization-mode-dispersion, change in propagation delay, changes or loss-of-light, changes in OSNR, changes in BER between the two nodes. By recording these physical layer changes and time-stamping them information on the magnitude and estimated location of the changes can be inferred by from the time records. In one aspect the method may be used in a distributed optical sensor for monitoring trespassing events that are a risk to fiber security of an optical transmission link.

Fault localization and fiber security in optical transponders

An optical probe includes an optical source that generates an optical beam that propagates from a proximal end to a distal end of an optical fiber that imparts a transformation of a spatial profile of the optical beam. An optical control device imparts a compensating spatial profile on the optical beam that at least partially compensates for the transformation of the spatial profile of the optical beam imparted by the optical fiber in response to a control signal from a signal processor. A distal optical source generates a calibration light that propagates through the one or more optical waveguides from the distal end to the proximal end of the optical fiber. An optical detector detects the calibration light and generates electrical signals in response to the detected calibration light. The signal processor generates the control signal to instruct the optical control device to impart the compensating spatial profile on the optical beam that at least partially compensates for the transformation of the spatial profile of the optical beam imparted by the optical fiber.
