A time-of-flight (TOF) sensing system may include an illumination module and a sensor module. The sensor module may include an array of sensor pixels, pixel-level readout circuitry, and column-level readout circuitry coupled to the pixel-level readout circuitry via corresponding column lines. Pixel-level readout circuitry may be provided on a per-pixel basis (e.g., dedicated or unshared per-pixel readout circuitry may be provided for each pixel). Pixel-level readout circuitry may include one or more correlated double sampling stages and a storage stage. The storage stage may include a set of capacitors each configured to store different phase data generated by a corresponding pixel for a TOF sensing operation.

Imaging system with time-of-flight sensing

A time-of-flight (TOF) sensing system may include an illumination module and a sensor module. The illumination module may emit light having a reduced illumination duty cycle such as a high peak power and low width illumination pulse. The emitted light may reflect off of one or more objects as reflected light. The sensor module may include pixels operable based on a sensor modulation signal to generated image charge portions in response to the reflected light. The sensor modulation signal may be selectively suppressed after a period of time corresponding to a distance of interest. Processing circuitry in the TOF sensing system may obtain TOF information based on a phase difference between the emitted light and the image charge portions determined by cross-correlation data. By using the illumination pulse and the selective sensor modulation suppression, TOF sensing may exhibit reduced aliasing issues and improved ambient light rejection.

An imaging system includes an illumination unit and a sensor unit disposed on a printed circuit board. The illumination unit includes a diode laser source inside an illumination housing. The sensor unit includes an image sensor having a pixel array and a lens barrel mounted on the image sensor with an adhesive, and an optical fiber coupled between the illumination housing and image sensor. The optical fiber is configured to collect a portion of light from the interior of the illumination housing that is emitted by the diode laser source and direct the portion of light to a corner of the pixel array of the image sensor that is located outside the lens barrel.

Global shutter pixel circuit and method for computer vision applications

A method for determining a distance to a target object includes transmitting light pulses to illuminate the target object and sensing, in a first region of a light-sensitive pixel array, light provided from an optical feedback device that receives a portion of the transmitted light pulses. The feedback optical device includes a preset reference depth. The method includes calibrating time-of-flight (TOF) depth measurement reference information based on the sensed light in the first region of the pixel array. The method further includes sensing, in a second region of the light-sensitive pixel array, light reflected from the target object from the transmitted light pulses. The distance of the target object is determined based on the sensed reflected light and the calibrated TOF measurement reference information.

Real time calibration for time-of-flight depth measurement

An image sensor device includes a plurality of pixel cells arranged in a pixel array, a control circuit for controlling an exposure phase and a sampling phase of the image sensor device. Each of the plurality of pixel cells includes a photodiode, a storage diode, and a floating diffusion region. The control circuit is configured to activate the photodiode in a plurality of time windows to sense light reflected from a target as a result of a corresponding plurality of emitted light pulses, with a pre-determined delay time between each time window and a corresponding emitted light pulse. The photodiode can be activated using a plurality of bias voltage pulses or a plurality of global shutter signal pulses.

An imaging lens includes one or more lens elements configured to receive and focus light in a first wavelength range reflected off of one or more first objects onto an image plane, and to receive and focus light in a second wavelength range reflected off of one or more second objects onto the image plane. The imaging lens further includes an aperture stop and a filter positioned at the aperture stop. The filter includes a central region and an outer region surrounding the central region. The central region of the filter is characterized by a first transmission band in the first wavelength range and a second transmission band in the second wavelength range. The outer region of the filter is characterized by a third transmission band in the first wavelength range and substantially low transmittance values in the second wavelength range.

Method and system for multiple f-number lens

A pixel cell for differential light sensing includes a plurality of photodiodes and a corresponding plurality of storage diodes. Each storage diode is disposed between a first adjacent photodiode and a second adjacent photodiode, and each storage diode is configured to receive photo charges from either or both of the first adjacent photodiode and the second adjacent photodiode. Each photodiode is disposed between a first adjacent storage diode and a second adjacent storage diode, and each photodiode is configured to transfer photo charges to either or both of the first adjacent storage diode and the second adjacent storage diode.

Differential pixel circuit and method of computer vision applications

An embodiment of the invention provides a time of flight three-dimensional TOF-3D camera that determines distance to features in a scene responsive to amounts of light from the scene registered by pixels during different exposure periods and an experimentally determined probabilistic model of how much light the pixels are expected to register during each of the different exposure periods.

A multimode interline charge coupled device having an array of light sensitive pixels, each configured to accumulate photocharge responsive to light incident on the pixel, and a controller configured to allocate a first portion of the pixels to accumulate photocharge responsive to light from a scene during a plurality of exposure periods and allocate a second portion of the pixels to store photocharge accumulated by pixels in the first portion to provide a plurality of images of the scene greater than two.

Multimode photosensor

A photosensor having a plurality of light sensitive pixels each of which comprises a light sensitive region and a plurality of storage regions for accumulating photocharge generated in the light sensitive region, a transfer gate for each storage region that is selectively electrifiable to transfer photocharge from the light sensitive region to the storage region, and an array of microlenses that for each storage region directs a different portion of light incident on the pixel to a region of the light sensitive region closer to the storage region than to other storage regions.

Variable resolution pixel

An embodiment of the invention provides a spectral imager for imaging a scene comprising a semiconductor photosensor comprising light sensitive pixels and a power source that applies voltage to the photosensor to control responsivity of the pixels to light incident on the pixels in different wavelengths bands of light.
